- Motor vehicle starter of the type comprising: an electric motor (10), the output shaft (16) of which drives a coaxial starter in rotation via a reduction gear (26) with an epicyclic gear train (20, 60, 68) comprising a cylindrical casing (24), within which the ring gear (58), having internal teeth (60), of the epicyclic train (22) is rotatably mounted, and of the type in which the ring gear (58) is coupled in rotation to the casing (24) via a friction-type torque-limiting device (80) interposed axially between the ring gear and a lateral flange of the casing (24), characterised in that the device is formed by at least one annular lateral friction face (82, 84) of the ring gear (58), which is loaded elastically into axial engagement against a reaction surface (86, 94) coupled in rotation to the casing (24).
- Starter according to Claim 1, characterised in that the reaction surface is the inner face (86) of a lateral flange (30) of the casing (24).
- Starter according to Claim 2, characterised in that the annular lateral rear face (82) of the ring gear (58) is in axial engagement against the inner face (86) of the annular rear flange (30) of the casing (24) , which is traversed by the free end of the shaft (16) of the motor (10), which drives in rotation the sun gear (20) of the epicyclic train (22).
- Starter according to Claim 3, characterised in that an elastic member (98) is mounted in axial compression between the annular lateral front face (84) of the ring gear (58) and the inner face (100) of the front flange (34) of the casing (24), which is traversed by the output shaft (38) of the reduction gear (26) coupled in rotation to the planet carrier (64) of the epicyclic train (22).
- Starter according to Claim 4, characterised in that the two annular lateral faces (82, 84) of the ring gear (58) constitute two friction surfaces of the torque-limiting device (80), and in that the annular lateral front face (84) of the ring gear (58) is in axial engagement against the annular rear face (94) of a bearing washer (96), which is coupled in rotation to the casing (24) and mounted for axial sliding movement relative to the latter, and the annular front face (102) of which constitutes an engagement surface for an elastic member (98).
- Starter according to either of Claims 4 and 5, characterised in that the elastic member (98) is a frustoconical elastic washer.
- Starter according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the internally toothed ring gear (58) is made of a material having good friction characteristics and good wear-resistance characteristics.
- Starter according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the casing (24) has a cylindrical annular skirt (28), the rear end of which is open, and in that the rear flange (30) is an annular rear disc pierced at its centre (32) to allow the shaft (16) of the motor (10) to pass through, retained axially within the casing (24) and immobilised against rotation with respect to the latter.
- Starter according to Claim 8, characterised in that the rear disc (30) is retained within the casing (24) by a thrust ring (90) mounted in an internal radial groove (92) in the skirt (28) of the casing (24).
- Starter according to either of Claims 8 and 9, characterised in that the front flange (34) of the casing (24) is an annular front disc, which is pierced at its centre (36) to allow the output shaft (38) of the reduction gear (26) to pass through and which bears axially against an internal radial shoulder (44) of the skirt (28) of the casing (24).
- Starter according to Claim 10, characterised in that the central hole (40) in the front disc (34) of the casing (24) receives a bearing (70) for guiding the output shaft (38) of the reduction gear (26) in rotation.
- Starter according to any of claims 8 to 11, characterised in that the rear end (48) of the skirt (28) comprises a bearing surface (50) for centring the casing (24) on the stator (14) of the electric motor (10).
- Starter according to any of Claims 10 to 12 taken in combination with Claim 6, characterised in that the inner face of the front disc (34) comprises a cylindrical bearing surface (104) for centring the elastic washer (98).
- Starter according to any of Claims 10 to 13, characterised in that the front disc (34) is immobilised against rotation with respect to the skirt (28) of the casing (24).
- Starter according to Claim 14 taken in combination with either of Claims 8 and 9 and with Claim 5, characterised in that the front disc (34) and the rear disc (30) each have a radial lug (54, 88), and in that the skirt (28) of the casing (24) has an axial groove (56), in which the said radial lugs are received for the purpose of immobilising these components (34, 30) against rotation with respect to the casing (24).
