Definitions
- the invention relates to a force-insertable holding and contact element, or solderless electrical contact termination, in particular for connecting a connection element to a printed circuit.
- Solderless electrical contact terminations are known from documents US 3,634,819 and EP 0 141 492.
- a flat pin also comprises spring arms arched outwards transversely to the axial direction of the contact.
- a complementary device for holding the connector on the printed circuit is generally produced either by devices provided with arms by harpoon devices for which the holding element consists of a spring clip provided with external projections. or teeth, coming to seize in the internal wall of a metallized hole of the printed circuit.
- a harpoon attachment of this type is known from document US Pat. No. 5,154,634.
- the use of such a attachment as ground contact is frequent but the connection made is through the teeth planted in the metallized layer of the hole which forms thus specific contact areas which, on the one hand, are not not favorable for an effective mass continuity and which, on the other hand, risk deteriorating over time.
- This holding device is in any case not suitable for producing power contacts.
- the present invention proposes to produce a force-insertable element offering a large retention surface allowing, on the one hand, a robust retention of the connector and, on the other hand, a reliable connection over time capable of making a power contact or a mass contact.
- the force-insertable electrical contact and holding element consists of a pin provided with a slot on a portion of the barrel constituting this pin, this slot defining branches of arcuate longitudinal shape, at least one of the branches defined by this slot having a massive section whose external wall has a transverse profile in an arc of a circle of variable radius as a function of the longitudinal position of the section considered.
- the split portion is delimited at its upper end by a rigid base and at its lower end by a connecting beam, the beam and the base delimiting the ends of the barrel.
- the base can advantageously constitute the lower surface of a flange extended by a joining piece for a complementary connection element.
- the internal walls of the branches extend in a direction parallel to the axis of the barrel.
- the branches may each have an internal wall of transverse profile in an arc of a circle of constant radius over the length of the branches.
- the branches may have parallel flat side walls
- the invention also relates to a connector element for a printed circuit comprising an insulating body for receiving electrical contacts, these electrical contacts being provided on the one hand with a termination for connection to a contact carried by a complementary connector element and, d on the other hand, a connection termination on a printed circuit, the connection termination on a printed circuit of at least one of said contacts consisting of a force-insertable element according to the invention so as to make a power connection.
- It also relates to a connector element for a printed circuit of the shielding envelope type for which one or more force-insertable element according to the invention makes a ground connection between the shielding envelope and a metallized hole in the printed circuit.
- the massive section of the branches of the force-insertable element according to the invention gives it the advantage of working by plastic deformation of the branches and allows residual pressure to be applied to the wall of the metallized hole with possible penetration.
- the force-insertable retaining element consists of a spindle, of generally cylindrical shape, designated by the general reference 1.
- This spindle comprises a tubular upper part 10, a central part forming a collar 11 and a barrel-shaped lower part comprising two branches 2,3 separated by a slot 16 and connected by a terminal beam 8.
- the collar has a lower face 9 to which the branches 2 and 3 are connected, this surface 9 thus forming a base for the branches 2 and 3.
- the flange comprises sections 13 whereas in FIG. 1-A, the flange 11 is followed in the direction of the upper part of an indented zone 12 the function of sections 13 and of the indented area will be explained in relation to FIGS. 4 and 5.
- Element 1 is seen from the side and in half section along a vertical plane passing through its longitudinal axis.
- the tubular spindle 1 is provided with a bore 14 opening into the upper part of the spindle, and that a slot 16 separates the branches 2 and 3.
- the branches 2 and 3 each have an outer surface 5 and an inner surface 6, the branches have a massive section such that their elasticity is reduced to a minimum.
- the external surface 5 of at least one of the pins has a transverse profile in an arc of a circle of variable radius as a function of the longitudinal position of the section considered, this variable radius thus defining for the branch considered a lower guide zone to the insertion into a hole 31 of a printed circuit 30, an enlarged cross-sectional area of interference with the wall of the hole 31 and an upper reduced cross-sectional area of connection of the branch with the base 9.
- the branches are connected, at their insertion end, by a beam (8) of rigid connection.
- Figures 3-A and 3-B show the interference of the section of the branches in a metallized hole 31 of a printed circuit, metallized hole connected in a manner known per se to a metallized track of said printed circuit, respectively, in Figure 3 -A in the case of a hole of minimum diameter and a maximum offset of the axis of the hole with the axis of the spindle and, in Figure 3-B in the case of a hole of maximum diameter.
- the diameter of a metallized hole for fixing a connector commonly 3 mm, can, depending on manufacturing tolerances, increase to 3.20 mm.
- the metallization layer typically comprising a layer of 25 microns of copper covered with 5 microns of tin-lead.
- the tolerated offset between the axes of the hole and of the holding element is 0.12 mm.
- the holding element corresponding to this drilling will have branches whose enlarged cross-sectional area (seen in figure 2-B) will define a diameter of 3.25 mm and whose massive constitution will allow interference with metallized walls at least 0.05 mm, for the maximum diameter hole, up to an interference of 0.27 mm, for the minimum diameter hole with maximum offset.
- the combined crushing of the barrel of the holding element and the walls of the hole prevents the plating of the metallization layer.
- FIG. 4 describes an application of a holding element according to the invention used as a fixing and ground connection pad of an electrical connector on a printed circuit.
- the connector designated by the general reference 40 comprises in an known manner an insulating body 41 supporting contacts, provided with connection terminations 42 with tracks of the printed circuit 30, and a metal shielding envelope constituted by a front shell 43, covering the lateral faces of the receiving part of a complementary connector (not shown), the metal casing being provided with flanks 44 and flaps 45, the flanks 44 and flaps 45 securing the metallic casing and the contact support insulator .
- Such connectors are for example known under the name "SUB D".
- the insertable element 1 traps and maintains the metal casing 44 and the insulation 41 between its flange 11 and the folded upper edge 17 of its tubular upper part 10.
- the tubular upper part can be provided with an internal thread 15 allowing either the fixing of a complementary connector comprising retaining screws, or the fixing of a coding means.
- the fixing element comprises a knurling 12 inserted by force into the insulation 41 of the connector and the collar 11 comes to bear against the lower edge of the insulation 41 of the connector.
- the connector thus provided with its fixing studs is then inserted on the printed circuit, the fixing studs ensuring continuity of mass between the shell and the printed circuit.
- FIGS. 6 and 7 are described respectively a power contact of the angled type and a connector element receiving this contact.
- the power contact is built around a central block 53.
- the central block 53 is provided on a first face with a tip 52 on which is fixed a termination 50 for connection to a contact carried by a complementary connector.
- the connection termination 50 which has a bore 51 at the rear part is inserted from the front into a cell of an insulator 61 contact support.
- the central block 53 is inserted from the rear into the cell of the insulation so that the end piece 52 fits into the bore 51 of the termination 50 thus trapping the insulation 61.
- the central block comprises moreover, on a second face, a bore 54 receiving the tubular part 10 of an element 1.
- the power contact thus formed is suitable for passage of currents of 30 amperes without requiring soldering the contact on the printed circuit and, by its constitution, can maintain the connector on the printed circuit.
- the manufacture of a connector with straight contacts is possible by omitting the central block and by simply embedding the tubular rear part 10 of the insertable element 1 in the bore 51 of the connection part.
- FIGS. 8A and 8B show different embodiments of power contacts and connectors receiving them.
- FIGS. 8A and 8B it is a bent type connector for which the contact element 1 is connected to a connection termination with a complementary contact of a connector not shown.
- FIG. 8 A the constituent elements insulating block 70, connection termination 71 and contact element 1 are shown separately.
- a bore is produced in the part 10 of the element 1, a bore in which the rear part 74 of the connection termination 71 is forcibly inserted.
- the power contact in the insulator is maintained by the front part of the termination 71.
- the rear part 10 of the contact element 1 which is inserted by force into a bore 75 of the contact termination 71.
- the insulating element 70 may be provided with centering and fixing pins 72, 73.
- a force-insertable element according to the invention can advantageously be obtained by a first step of turning a cylindrical bar to produce the external shape of the spindle, a second step of axial boring of the spindle and a third step of milling the lateral faces of the branches of the spindle, this last step creating the slot 16 separating the branches 2, 3.
- This step of milling can be carried out by means of straight cutters or cutters to form respectively lateral faces 7 parallel planes, either inclined side faces or any profile.
- the internal walls 6 of the branches obtained by the boring step are advantageously parallel over the length of the branches and provided with a transverse profile in an arc of a circle of constant radius over the length of the branches to avoid any variation in the distance between the flange and the contact area with the printed circuit during the force insertion and increase the rigidity of the branches.
