- EP 0 552 460 A1 is at the electrodes, which consists of at least one device-side electrode on the one hand and from the components or the Bracket for the components on the other hand exist, applied voltage in the so-called zero pulse pauses, i.e. the procedure is without one so-called basic voltage operated.
- the carbonizable materials include non-ferrous ones Materials also non-ferrous materials such as titanium.

- FIG. 3 shows, based on the lower curve, the superimposition according to the invention of a constant basic voltage U g , which is below a breakdown voltage dependent on the given process parameters, as indicated by line 21, and a pulsed DC voltage of multiple levels. This influences the excitation, dissociation and ionization as well as the de-excitation and recombination. Since the constant basic voltage U g is below the breakdown voltage, no current flows during the pulse pause of the pulsed direct voltage, as can be seen from the curve I in FIG. 3.
- the distance "T” from the component surface is shown on the abscissa, which is designated by 0.0.
- the carbon content "C” is given in percent on the ordinate.
- the lower curve 22 reproduces the conditions in the case of a pulsed DC voltage without superimposing a basic voltage, while the curve 23 shows the conditions in the event of a pulsed DC voltage being superimposed with a constantly present basic voltage. A significantly higher carbon content is thus achieved both on the surface and to a depth of 0.5 mm.
- the following ratios were selected: the pulsed DC voltage was 600 volts, the ratio of pulse duration t 1 to pause duration t 2 was 1:10, and the level of the constant base voltage was 100 volts.
- a number of cylindrical bolts with a length of 150 mm and a diameter of 16 mm were made of the alloy 16MnCr5 for a period of 120 minutes of a pulsed DC voltage of 600 volts and a basic voltage of 100 volts.
- the composition of the gas mixture supplied via the supply line 13 was 10 volume percent argon, 10 volume percent methane and 80 volume percent hydrogen. Under these conditions, the result according to curve 23 in FIG. 4 was achieved. If one does not want to achieve a higher carbon content, the process according to the invention leads to a much faster carburization both on the surface and in depth. Nevertheless, smaller voltage or current sources can be used.

Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for carburizing components carbonizable materials, especially steel, by means of a pulsed plasma discharge in a carbon-containing Atmosphere at pressures between 0.1 and 30 mbar and at Pulse voltages between 200 and 2000 volts, preferably between 300 and 1000 volts.
In such a method known from EP 0 552 460 A1 is at the electrodes, which consists of at least one device-side electrode on the one hand and from the components or the Bracket for the components on the other hand exist, applied voltage in the so-called zero pulse pauses, i.e. the procedure is without one so-called basic voltage operated.
The carbonizable materials include non-ferrous ones Materials also non-ferrous materials such as titanium.
When carburizing steel components in a pulsed mode Glow discharge (plasma) becomes high at the beginning of carburization Carbon flow adjusted so that the marginal carbon content in the component increases as quickly as possible to values just below the saturation limit. This will make it as steep as possible at the start of treatment Carbon gradient set in the component, which is positive affects the properties of the end products.
The carbon flow depends on the plasma parameters: In order to generate a high carbon flow, a correspondingly high plasma power must be introduced into the plasma. The electrical current which arises in the plasma during a pulse depends on the size of the surface of the components to be treated and usually reaches orders of magnitude of 25 A / m 2 surface. For the treatment of large batches, it is therefore necessary to use generators with pulse powers of more than 200 A at voltages between 500 and 1000 volts. By US-PS 4 490 190 it is when using a conventional Additional heating of the workpieces is known, due to a correspondingly high level Frequency of short-term impulses and long pauses a cold plasma to generate and thereby the heating effect of the plasma from its to decouple thermochemical action on the workpieces. Thereby thermal damage to the workpieces should be avoided. Measures to maintain part of the ionization state in the Pulse pauses are not given, however, so a longer one Exposure time and / or a lower penetration depth of the gases can be assumed. The size of the workpieces or even the batch, the current density or the total current are also not specified.
From US-A-2 946 708 it is known to nitride inner surfaces of pipes by means of a gas discharge plasma, optionally also in the presence of carbon ions. The heating of the workpieces to 500 to 550 ° C is limited in that the plasma is excited by DC pulses of alternating height, which are superimposed on a constant basic voltage of 400 V, for example, and should be at least 10% higher than the basic voltage itself and up to Can be ten times the basic voltage. A voltage of 400 V is above the breakdown voltage for the plasma, and it is also said nowhere that the plasma intensity should be interrupted to a standby potential during the phases of low voltage. It is known to the person skilled in the art that a plasma is difficult to ignite in a tube. This problem can be solved by increasing the energy because the plasma is increasingly driven from the pipe ends to the pipe center. However, there is a risk of the tube material overheating. The author therefore goes two ways: 1. Positioning a wire as a counterelectrode in the tube and 2. Driving the plasma into the tube by periodically increasing the power between 1.1 times and 10 times a basic voltage, but also for ignition of the Plasma is enough. The pulses of higher voltage should be a few tenths of a second and have intervals of 3 to 5 seconds. The duration of treatment is between 12 and 30 hours. The object underlying the invention of faster carburization using smaller generators is not achieved.
Due to the unpublished FR-A-2 708 624 , only in France is a state-of-the-art process for condensing amorphous diamond-like coating layers or those made of carbides of silicon and germanium by a CVD process on workpieces, under vacuum and at high frequency - or microwave excitation is operated. A pulsation of the current through the generator should ensure that the plasma is only activated during a cyclical fraction of the treatment period in order to improve the hardness and the adhesive strength of the condensed surface layers. The high frequency is 13.56 MHz and the microwave frequency is 2.45 GHz, the voltage is between 10 and 1000 V and the workpiece temperature is between 200 and 500 ° C with a vacuum between about 5 x 10 -3 and 1.0 mbar. At such frequencies, so-called "plasma clouds" arise in which the components are coated. Such deposition processes require very high power densities, which would quickly lead to overheating of the components. However, since amorphous layers or silicon carbide layers only form at relatively low temperatures, the energy supply must be "stretched" over time. If the temperature becomes too high, crystalline layers form. The duration of treatment is divided cyclically into periods of excitation and non-excitation of the plasma, which can increase performance. this increase in performance should lead to the fact that the plasma is rich in neutral radicals, which have a strong chemical activity and thereby improve the adhesion of the layer to the workpiece surface. The coating is accelerated without the temperature of the substrates rising inappropriately. The problem underlying the invention of carburizing a base material through its surface and being able to use smaller generators here is likewise not achieved by this prior art.
From US-A-4 406 765 it is known to produce amorphous silicon-containing semiconductor layers on substrates by means of a plasma which is generated by high frequency and a superimposed direct voltage. In particular, it is about the production of photovoltaic cells. However, the DC voltage should generate an independent discharge with a neutralization effect. that is, the potential of the DC voltage must be above the breakdown voltage, and it is also not specified that the breakdown voltage should be fallen short of, or even that there should be pauses in discharge. A constant basic voltage of -700 V is given as an example. Falling below the breakdown voltage is also ruled out by the task that when operating with direct voltage only silicon powder is produced, which would not be possible without the formation of a plasma. The difficulties are due to the fact that silicon has semiconducting properties. This means that as soon as a closed silicon layer has formed on a substrate, the electrical conductivity of the surface is drastically reduced. This leads to a positive space charge building up in front of the surface, which hinders the acceleration of the ions to the surface. The result of this is that only silicon powder is formed, but no firmly adhering silicon layer. In order to overcome this "obstacle", it is proposed to first ignite the plasma by means of a direct current plasma and to superimpose additional voltage pulses on this direct current plasma. This means that additional current pulses are superimposed on an unpulsed current to generate a DC plasma in order to overcome a space charge. The task according to the invention of carburizing a base material through its surface is neither solved by this prior art nor is such a solution suggested, nor is the use of smaller generators.
Die Glimmentladung wird durch die GesamtspannungFrom the summary of JP-A-02 125 856 in "Patent Abstracts of Japan" Volume 14, No. 342, it is known to apply a glow discharge to the treatment of workpieces, which is excited by a DC voltage and a sequence of superimposed square-wave pulses. Here, a controllable basic voltage "Ea" should already generate a discharge, ie the breakdown voltage is already clearly exceeded by the basic voltage, which is overlaid on a pulse train with the non-controllable voltage "Eb". The glow discharge is caused by the total voltage
This adjustable basic voltage voltage pulses Eb which cannot be regulated are superimposed, as a result of which Superposition the "total plasma voltage" Ec is reached. Of the According to the description, neither frequency nor Control amplitude. Pulse duration and pause are rather from the current network frequency determined. This is intended to miniaturize the Power supply can be achieved. However, the problem remains consist that the full power is clocked and none Impulse breaks occur.
In the method according to DE-A-28 42 407 , a base voltage is applied to the workpiece, which alone causes a gas discharge. An additional voltage is superimposed on this base voltage by means of an external discharge, for example by a plasma torch, in order to increase the ionization of the gas. Insofar as pulse operation is described, it is a matter of individual interference pulses which serve for pre-ionization or for further amplification of the ionization. A periodic interruption of the glow discharge is not disclosed.
From DE-A-40 03 623 it is known to control the voltage supply of a plasma treatment system in such a way that the power is gradually and continuously reduced after a heating phase until a lower threshold value for the voltage is undershot. Then there is an automatic switch to a pulse mode with pauses or rest intervals, with the voltage initially falling further. However, it is not said that a base voltage which is just below the breakdown voltage is maintained in the pulse pauses, so that the excitation state of the ions is largely retained. Rather, the voltage should gradually be adjusted again depending on the temperature so that the operation takes place in a neutral range which is above the lower threshold value and with which difficulties in gluing do not occur noticeably, but the pulse operation is maintained with pauses. Only plasma nitriding is described, so that no suggestions are given for adding hydrocarbons, increasing the carburizing speed and reducing the size of the power supply device.
From DE-A-42 38 993 C1 it is known to carburize workpieces in pulse plasma operation, but without a base voltage remaining during the pulse pauses.
The invention is therefore based on the object of higher carbon flows to generate using smaller generators and thereby the Investment and operating costs of a plant for the implementation of the Reduce process.
The task is solved at the beginning described method according to the invention in that the Pulse voltage is superimposed on a constant basic voltage, which is below the breakdown voltage.
The breakdown voltage is the voltage at which the given parameters in the device, a plasma can be ignited can. Compliance with the condition according to the invention can therefore be achieved check that when applying the basic voltage to the Electrodes just did not ignite a plasma.
It is advantageous if values for the basic voltage between 2% and 35% of the pulse voltage can be selected, especially if as a basic voltage a DC voltage with values between 10 and 150 Volts, preferably between 20 and 100 volts, is selected.
The pulse frequency is not an overly critical limit; beneficial Results came at a pulse frequency of 15 kHz.
The ratio of pulse duration t 1 to pause duration t 2 is also not very critical; it can be chosen between 4: 1 and 1: 100 with particular advantage. The pulse duration between 50 and 200 microseconds and the pause duration between 500 and 2000 microseconds are selected in a particularly expedient manner.
Further advantageous refinements of the method according to the invention result from the remaining subclaims.

Figure 1 shows a vertical section through a device for implementation

In the bottom 2b of the
In Figures 2 and 3, the time t is plotted on the abscissa, namely, t 1 denotes the pulse duration and t 2 the pulse pause. Each diagram contains the respective pulse voltage U, the current I flowing during a pulse, and a curve that symbolizes the state of excitation by ionization and dissociation and the excitation by recombination. In addition to the pulse voltage, FIG. 3 also shows the basic voltage, which lies below the so-called breakdown voltage, which is shown by a dash-dotted
If, according to FIG. 2, a pulsed DC voltage without superimposed basic voltage is used, hydrocarbon molecules are excited during a voltage pulse and are supplied via the
The recombination processes and the relapse from high energy in more energetically stable or less energetic states require time. By Variation of voltage and pulse duration (corresponds to extent and height excitation, dissociation and ionization) and pause duration (corresponds to Recombination and de-excitation) between the voltage pulses Targeted influence of carbon flow.
Kurvenzug I in Figur 3 ergibt.FIG. 3 shows, based on the lower curve, the superimposition according to the invention of a constant basic voltage U g , which is below a breakdown voltage dependent on the given process parameters, as indicated by
As a result, there is none for the constant basic voltage Arc detection device needed because of this basic voltage no plasma is generated. Due to the basic tension they fall excited species during the pulse pauses of the pulsed DC voltage does not return to such low energy conditions as in the pulse breaks without superimposed basic voltage according to the state of the Technology (Figure 2) are available. By the invention Measure will be the excited species in higher energy states held, and from these states the said species can more easily excited, ionized and dissociated in the subsequent impulse become. With the same voltage, pulse duration and pause duration thus compared to the prior art without superimposed Basic voltage higher carbon flows are generated, as shown in Figure 4 is shown.
Kohlenstoffgehalt "C" in Prozent angegeben.
anstehenden Grundspannung wiedergibt.
anstehenden Grundspannung betrugt 100 Volt.In Figure 4, the distance "T" from the component surface is shown on the abscissa, which is designated by 0.0. The carbon content "C" is given in percent on the ordinate. The
t1 = 100 µs, die Impulspause betrugt t2 = 1000 µs. Die Zusammensetzung
des über die Versorgungsleitung 13 zugeführten Gasgemisch betrug 10
Volumenprozent Argon, 10 Volumenprozent Methan und 80
Volumenprozent Wasserstoff. Unter diesen Bedingungen wurde das
Ergebnis gemäß der Kurve 23 in Figur 4 erzielt. Will man keinen höheren
Stromquellen
eingesetzt werden. In a device according to FIG. 1 with a usable volume within the
