    5. An apparatus according to claim 4, characterized in that the grinding element (31) of the grinding unit (26) is formed as a rotating cup wheel (61) having an axis of rotation (62) extending perpendicularly to the connecting line (49).
    6. An apparatus according to one of claims 1 to 5, characterized in that the machine frame (5) consists of two frame parts (7,8;56,57) - each supported on one of the rails (2,3) - which are connected to one another by means of the length compensation unit (14) and which are adjustable with respect to one another in the transverse direction of the track.
    7. An apparatus according to claim 6, characterized in that a support roller (10), supporting on the rail (2) the frame part (7;56) which is spaced from the carrier frame (6), is shaped as a double-flanged roller.
    8. An apparatus according to one of claims 1 to 7, characterized in that the length compensation unit (14) consists of a support bar (15), extending in the transverse direction of the track, which is fastened to one frame part (8) and mounted for displacement with regard to its longitudinal direction on the other frame part (7), the pressure-exerting element (17) being arranged between the two frame parts (7,8) and having the shape of a helical spring (18) compressible as a result of the distance reduction.
    9. An apparatus according to one of claims 3 to 8, characterized in that associated with each track roller (25) is a guide roller (40) fastened to the carrier frame (6) and rotatable about an axis (41) extending perpendicularly to the pivot axis (21) and at an angle to the axis of rotation (24) of the track roller (25).
    10. An apparatus according to claim 9, characterized in that the guide roller (40) has a flange (42) for application to a field-side rail head edge (43) spaced from the track roller (25).
    11. An apparatus according to one of claims 9 to 11, characterized in that the angle included between the axis of rotation (24) of the track roller (25) and the axis (41) of the guide roller (40) measures approximately 45°.
    12. An apparatus according to one of claims 1 to 11, characterized in that the pivot drive (32) is designed as a hydraulic drive which is hinged to both the machine frame (5) and the carrier frame (6).
    13. An apparatus according to one of claims 1 to 12, characterized in that the grinding unit (26) is designed to be adjustable on the carrier frame (6), with regard to the rail (3) to be treated, by means of a remotely controllable adjusting drive (30) in a direction perpendicular to the pivot axis (21).
    14. An apparatus according to one of claims 1 to 13, characterized in that the machine frame (5) has an upwardly projecting handle bar (38) on which control elements (36) for the drive motor (33) and the grinding unit (26) are arranged.
