- These arrangements significantly improve the propulsion quality for ships with higher levels of thrust, such as tugs, push boats or trawlers, for lower ship speeds and higher levels of thrust.
- Their use in ship types with lower degrees of thrust and higher ship speeds, such as freight and passenger ships or ferry ships, is limited by the inherent resistance of the full ring nozzle, which increases roughly square with the ship speed.
- the criteria for the use of Kort nozzles are "load levels", in which there is a power in the numerator or thrust, in the denominator a product in which the inflow velocity is in the third or second power.
- the criterion for the use of Kort nozzles the inflow velocity averaged over the propeller disk area is normally taken into account for the inflow velocity. If the effect of the Kort nozzle is now limited to the upper half of the propeller disk area, the local inflow velocity prevailing in this area is to be expected, which, depending on the shape of the ship, is considerably lower than the mean inflow velocity. This means that for the upper half of the nozzle the number for the propeller load increases in comparison to the case with a number for the entire Kort nozzle. In many cases, a small gain from a full ring Kort nozzle means that there is a large gain for the upper sector and a small loss for the lower sector.
- the object of the invention is to provide an improvement of generic arrangements which enables propulsion to be improved and which can be used to reduce propeller-induced vibrations and which ensures subsequent installation in a simple manner.
- the saddle nozzle also has the advantage over the Kort nozzle that an increased spacing of the propeller wing tips from the base line need not be required.
- a saddle nozzle With the usual configuration of the hull, propeller and rudder, a saddle nozzle must always be accommodated.
- the performance savings that can be achieved with the saddle nozzle are more than 10% for the ship types under consideration and thus more than the profits from other propulsion-improving measures.
- Cavitation can also develop in this arrangement according to the invention.
- the effect of the cavitation bubbles formed on the inner wall of the nozzle is alleviated in two ways by the circumferential grooves.
- the grooves swirl the boundary layer more, so that larger cavitation bubbles are broken down into many smaller ones, causing the implosions to lose strength in detail.

- the smallest inside diameter of the nozzle does not have to lie in the propeller area since the saddle nozzle can be lifted over the propeller when it is installed.
- the nozzle nose is cheap to give a slightly larger radius, since the direction of flow here shows greater differences than usual for aircraft wings.
- the profile of the saddle nozzle is formed as a single-profile from essentially cylindrical and conical surfaces, as developed by Schuschkin and Heuser.
- a favorable design can consist in that the saddle nozzle or the fins have end plates or winglets.
- the approximately radially arranged flow guide surfaces as fins have a static and a hydrodynamic task. These fins statically stiffen the saddle nozzle, and the connection to this saddle nozzle in turn protects the fins from excessive stresses in the sea. When arranged in front of the saddle nozzle, the fins hydrodynamically give the propeller inflow a pre-twist against the direction of rotation of the propeller, so that the flow leaves the propeller with less swirl losses. If the fins are arranged behind the propeller in a rotatable arrangement, they recover part of the swirl energy from the propeller outflow.
- the fins can be designed so that they take on other tasks. They can be arranged so strongly swept that they serve as ice deflectors. Furthermore, they can also be pulled in the manner of so-called Grothues spoilers on the side facing the ship's hull with their leading edge so that they divert the downward flow that is often present on the ship's outer skin in the propeller area more into the horizontal.
- a certain sweep is usually advisable so that the average distance between the rear edge of the fins and the propeller is not too small.
- DE-OS 19 38 480 shows a Kort nozzle as a propeller casing, an annular groove running in the inner wall of the nozzle being arranged with a swirl against the propeller pitch.
- a combination is also known from GB 2 063 378 A1, end plates forming an extension of a pre-nozzle. Furthermore, from DE-Z Hansa No. 19, 1962, page 1841, it can be seen that a full ring nozzle with a fixedly connected rudder is reinforced by surfaces attached to the side of the nozzle.
- the illustrated contour of a ship's hull 1 with a construction water line 9 is provided with a rudder spur 2, which carries an oar 3.
- a propeller 4 with a propeller hub 5 is arranged and has a propeller wing tip circle 14.
- the propeller 4 is assigned a propeller casing 6 in the manner of a saddle nozzle.
- the propeller casing 6 is connected with the interposition of a connecting element 8 with the stern or the gill of the hull 1.
- the frame contour 11 is shown in FIG. 2 as a connection zone.
- At the front end of the propeller casing 6 there is a horizontal flow guide surface 7 connected to its end regions, which is guided approximately radially over the region of the stern tube.
- the propeller casing 6 has grooves 10 on the side facing the propeller 4. According to FIGS. 4 and 5 additionally arranged in partial areas of grids 13, which form corresponding recesses 12.
- the arrangement of grids 12, 13 in the lower region of the propeller casing 6 reduces the triggering of pressure pulses when the propeller blades are knocked past.
- the pressure impulses are caught by the wall behind. This means that for the flow the gap between the wing tip and the inner wall of the nozzle is small, for the pressure impulses the wall distance from the wing tip does not change suddenly.
- the continuation of the nozzle profile is designed with an increasing distance between the inside of the nozzle and the propeller wing tip circle 14, the entry and exit area increasing to at least 4% of the propeller radius.
- the lower parts of the propeller shell can be formed from a flexible material, so that the impulses emanating from the wing tips are transmitted less.
- propeller casing 6 may also be expedient to arrange the propeller casing 6 taking into account the following instructions: Since the propeller inflow is usually directed slightly upwards and the flow converges from the top towards the center, it makes sense to adapt the nozzle profile direction to the flow direction.
- the position of the propeller casing and the horizontal flow guide surface 7 is determined in accordance with the existing conditions. In terms of length, it should often be favorable for about two-thirds to three-quarters of the propeller sheath 6 to be in front of the propeller tip circle 14. For statics and rigidity of the construction, it is advantageous if the horizontal guide surface 7 projects into the propeller casing. The rear edge of the horizontal flow guide surface 7 should be arranged to the rear as far as the power saving and vibration security allow. If necessary, a connecting element must be created between the flow guide surface 7 and the propeller casing 6.
- the profile shape of the propeller casing 6 is to be adapted to the shape of the ship and propeller, as well as the propeller load. Since the propeller 4 is not fully encased, the use of a Kaplan propeller makes little sense.
- the flow guide surface 6 is rotatably arranged on the hull 1 via a bearing 15.
- the rudder 3 on the rudder horn 2 is also pivoted.
- the direction of flow is identified by reference number 16.
- FIG. 9 a flow guide device 6 for a double screw arrangement is shown in FIG. 9.

Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a flow control device for ship propellers in the form of a propeller casing, which is fixedly or rotatably connected to the ship.
Flow control devices for ship propellers are known in different designs. Here, full-ring nozzles with a wing profile, such as Kort nozzles, are used, which enclose the entire propeller circle as closed rings. These arrangements significantly improve the propulsion quality for ships with higher levels of thrust, such as tugs, push boats or trawlers, for lower ship speeds and higher levels of thrust. Their use in ship types with lower degrees of thrust and higher ship speeds, such as freight and passenger ships or ferry ships, is limited by the inherent resistance of the full ring nozzle, which increases roughly square with the ship speed.
Furthermore, arrangements according to DD-B-238 586 and DE-A-36 20 540 are known for forming flow guide surfaces in front of the propeller. In the flow guide devices suitable for arrangement in front of the propeller, in particular because of their functional and constructive advantages an arrangement according to DE-B-32 16 578 enforced.
An arrangement for improving the vibration behavior and the propulsion through an arch-shaped wing in the propeller plane above the propeller according to DE-A-22 50 754 has also become known, but in which the vibration problems resulting from the wing entrance and exit have not been solved.
Thus, there is a defect that no suitable solution for improving propulsion, reducing vibrations and improving the swell or steering properties is known to date for the general use in ships with propellers of moderate levels of thrust.
When using a Kort nozzle, it is known that at high levels of thrust, such as are achieved with tugs and push boats, thrust and efficiency are improved by up to 30%. In the case of seagoing cargo ships, on the other hand, a Kort nozzle rarely achieves more than 7% improvement.
The low propeller load on most merchant ships, for example with a large propeller diameter and low power, can even lead to a Kort nozzle leading to a deterioration in efficiency.
The criteria for the use of Kort nozzles are "load levels", in which there is a power in the numerator or thrust, in the denominator a product in which the inflow velocity is in the third or second power. The criterion for the use of Kort nozzles the inflow velocity averaged over the propeller disk area is normally taken into account for the inflow velocity.
From this it can be deduced that it is favorable for a wide range of conventional merchant ships - in terms of efficiency - to install a partial nozzle only in the upper sector. One reason why such a design is not practiced is due to the fact that a "half" or a partial nozzle has no ring rigidity. This is because it is difficult to make a partial nozzle so rigid that it does not deform under hydrodynamic and other loads. In the case of a desirably small gap between the inner wall of the nozzle and the tip of the propeller wing, there is also the lack that the side flanks of the nozzle are pressed inwards elastically during operation and the propeller can touch the inside of the nozzle, damage to the nozzle and propeller coupled with a loss in efficiency. Although a partial nozzle would be sufficiently strong in a simple manner, it would be difficult to build it sufficiently rigid. Therefore, only Kort nozzle sections of less than a quarter circle circumference above the upper propeller sector are known.
In practice, not only are the half-shells of the nozzle not used, but also the horizontal guide surfaces known from model tests for imparting pre-swirl to the propeller inflow are hardly used. It is feared that damage as a result of slamming effects will occur in the sea.
- eine nur geringe Wirkungsgradverbesserung im Verhältnis zum Aufwand;
- eine wirkliche oder auch nur vermeintliche Gefahr der Betriebsstörung durch Gegenstände, die sich zwischen Propellerflügelspitze und Düseninnenwand festklemmen;
- eine Kavitationsanfälligkeit.
- only a small improvement in efficiency in relation to the effort;
- a real or even an assumed risk of malfunction due to objects jammed between the tip of the propeller and the inner wall of the nozzle;
- a susceptibility to cavitation.
The object of the invention is to provide an improvement of generic arrangements which enables propulsion to be improved and which can be used to reduce propeller-induced vibrations and which ensures subsequent installation in a simple manner.
- that the propeller sheathing is arranged as a saddle nozzle in the propeller plane, at least in the upper propeller sector, with an enclosure angle between 100 and 300 degrees,
- that an approximately horizontal flow guide fin is connected to the hull or the rudder post at the front or rear area of the propeller casing,
- that a gap which is formed between the inner wall of the propeller casing and the wing tip circle of the propeller in the entry and exit area of the propeller blades increases to at least 4% of the propeller radius.
This combination creates a cooperating system that advantageously reduces the drive power requirement. Furthermore, the propeller inflow velocity is evened out and thus contributes to the reduction of the vibration excited by the propeller. Modern cargo ships are particularly sensitive to these vibrations, since the deckhouses with living facilities and the ship's command center are located very far back, often directly above the propeller.
This arrangement as a saddle nozzle is inexpensive both on new buildings and for retrofitting ships that were initially designed without a saddle nozzle. In the case of retrofits, the entire connection can normally be made from the outside. No components are removed or replaced. Only additional parts are to be attached.
For retrofitting, the saddle nozzle also has the advantage over the Kort nozzle that an increased spacing of the propeller wing tips from the base line need not be required. With the usual configuration of the hull, propeller and rudder, a saddle nozzle must always be accommodated.
The risk of floating objects getting stuck between the propeller wing tip and the inner wall of the nozzle is lower for the saddle nozzle than for conventional Kort nozzles for two reasons. Once the saddle nozzle is open at the bottom. If a floating object can still be moved a little, it is released below. Furthermore, the boundary layer can be thickened by the corresponding grooves in the propeller casing. In this way, any floating objects are pushed inwards towards the hub.
With this design, the nozzle inherent resistance is increased somewhat, but the drive power requirement is hardly increased, since the gap losses between the propeller wing tip circle and the inner wall of the nozzle are considerably reduced as a result of the thickening of the boundary layer.
- Energierückgewinn aus einem größeren Nachstromvolumen, das sonst oberhalb des Propellers abfließt;
- Vortriebsgewinn aus dem propellerinduzierten Vortrieb der Satteldüse;
- Vortriebsgewinn durch die Vordrallerzeugung bzw. Entdrallung des Propellerstrahls durch die Strömungsleitflossen;
- Verbesserung des Propellerwirkungsgrades durch die Verringerung des Schubbelastungsgrades;
- Verbesserung des Propellerwirkungsgrades durch die vergleichmäßigte Anströmung;
- Energy recovery from a larger post-flow volume that would otherwise flow above the propeller;
- Propulsion gain from the propeller-induced propulsion of the saddle nozzle;
- Gain in propulsion through the pre-twist generation or de-swirling of the propeller jet by the flow guide fins;
- Improve propeller efficiency by reducing thrust load;
- Improvement of the propeller efficiency through the even flow;
- Reduced drag due to the streamlined connection of the saddle nozzle to the stern, gill and rudder post.
The performance savings that can be achieved with the saddle nozzle are more than 10% for the ship types under consideration and thus more than the profits from other propulsion-improving measures.
Further refinements are characterized by the features of the subclaims.
In the case of a rotatable arrangement, in addition to the fluidic use of the ship's length by stretching the stern lines, a reduction in the suction figure is achieved.
Cavitation can also develop in this arrangement according to the invention. However, the effect of the cavitation bubbles formed on the inner wall of the nozzle is alleviated in two ways by the circumferential grooves. First, the grooves swirl the boundary layer more, so that larger cavitation bubbles are broken down into many smaller ones, causing the implosions to lose strength in detail. Furthermore, the cavitation bubbles, such as floating objects, are also pushed away from the inner wall of the nozzle.
In the case of a fixedly arranged propeller sheathing as a saddle nozzle, the smallest inside diameter of the nozzle does not have to lie in the propeller area since the saddle nozzle can be lifted over the propeller when it is installed. Compared to NACA profiles, the nozzle nose is cheap to give a slightly larger radius, since the direction of flow here shows greater differences than usual for aircraft wings.
One design option is that the profile of the saddle nozzle is formed as a single-profile from essentially cylindrical and conical surfaces, as developed by Schuschkin and Heuser.
A favorable design can consist in that the saddle nozzle or the fins have end plates or winglets.
The approximately radially arranged flow guide surfaces as fins have a static and a hydrodynamic task.
The fins can be designed so that they take on other tasks.
A certain sweep is usually advisable so that the average distance between the rear edge of the fins and the propeller is not too small.
It is also possible to keep the distance between the propeller and the flow guide surface sufficiently large by making the profile length of the saddle nozzle large or by arranging a static connecting element such as a strut between the saddle nozzle and fin.
- Verwendung von High-Skew-Propellern und Vermeidung von Kaplan-Propellern;
- Führung der Strömung über die Innenkante von Grids, wobei die Innenwandung der Satteldüse bereichsweise unterbrochen ist und die Strömung über die Innenkante von Grids leitbar ist. Grids, die von Bugstrahlrudern her bekannt sind, wirken durch ihre Eigenschaft, die Oberfläche für die Leitung der Strömung und für die Aufnahme der Druckimpulse zu trennen. Die Strömung bewegt sich dabei etwa senkrecht zu der Kante der Grids, die der Strömung zugewandt ist;
- Using high skew propellers and avoiding Kaplan propellers;
- Guiding the flow over the inner edge of grids, the inner wall of the saddle nozzle being interrupted in some areas and the flow being conductive over the inner edge of grids. Grids, which are known from bow thrusters, have the property of separating the surface for directing the flow and for absorbing the pressure impulses. The flow moves approximately perpendicular to the edge of the grid facing the flow;
- to design the elastic formation of the lower saddle nozzle area so that this area yields somewhat to the pressure pulse.
Of course, sub-combinations claimed in other designs of flow guide arrangements are already known. It is known from DE-Z Hansa No. 11, 1974, pages 1008, 1009 to combine a full ring nozzle with a so-called Becker rudder. Furthermore, DE-OS 19 38 480 shows a Kort nozzle as a propeller casing, an annular groove running in the inner wall of the nozzle being arranged with a swirl against the propeller pitch.
A combination is also known from

The illustrated contour of a ship's
The
The arrangement of
In order to mitigate the effect of the pressure impulses, the continuation of the nozzle profile is designed with an increasing distance between the inside of the nozzle and the propeller
In order to reduce the vibrations that occur when the
It may also be expedient to arrange the
Since the propeller inflow is usually directed slightly upwards and the flow converges from the top towards the center, it makes sense to adapt the nozzle profile direction to the flow direction.
This adaptation to the flow direction is easy in that, in contrast to the Kort nozzle, the saddle nozzle only has to take into account the direction of flow of a small flow field. The position of the propeller casing and the horizontal
The profile shape of the
In the further exemplary embodiment according to FIGS. 7 and 8, the
