Description
In electronic ignition systems, ignition coils, which generate the ignition voltage or the ignition current, are controlled via a transmitter and a control unit by means of switching transistors. Older ignition systems with single ignition use a distributor to mechanically distribute the ignition voltage to the individual cylinders; in modern ignition systems, the cylinders are controlled directly - without a mechanical distributor.
In order to improve the cold start behavior of the engine, a high ignition energy of the ignition coil is required for the ignition process; Then, even if the spark plug is contaminated - there is a low-resistance shunt, through which part of the ignition energy flows out of the ignition coil - it is generally ensured that an ignition spark is generated between the spark plug electrodes.
As a result of this high ignition energy - it is actually no longer necessary when the engine is warmed up - the life of the spark plugs is greatly reduced. In order to extend the interval for changing the spark plugs - for example from 20,000 km to 50,000 or 100,000 km - improved spark plugs can be used, but these are very expensive.
The invention has for its object to provide an electronic ignition system that enables an extension of the spark plug life and that can be manufactured inexpensively and in large quantities. This object is achieved by the features in the characterizing part of
The burning time or burning time of the spark plugs - an arc is maintained between the spark plug electrodes during this time - can be varied in the ignition system according to the invention according to a burning time specification by the control device.
In particular, the maximum burning time can be provided in the cold start attempt, while it is reduced when the engine is already running; Therefore, high-energy or shunt-insensitive ignition can be used without the harmful effects on the spark plug life. The desired or required burning time of the spark plugs can be determined or determined depending on engine parameters and is passed on from the control unit to the output stage.
In order to influence the burning time, a switching unit with a switch is provided in the output stage, by means of which the primary side of the ignition coil is short-circuited after the burning time specified by the control unit; this extinguishes the spark between the spark plug electrodes and ends the burning time. This creates a freewheeling current in the switching unit through which the energy stored in the ignition coil is dissipated, this amount of energy the greater the shorter the specified burning time compared to the maximum burning time.
The switch of the switching unit can be implemented, for example, by transistors or thyristors, NPN transistors, PNP transistors, IGBT transistors and FET transistors being suitable as transistors; the transistors can also be designed as Darlington or tripleton transistors.

The control unit controls the time course of the ignition or the ignition times t Z by switching the ignition coil on / off, by using the switching edges U Z at the ignition input E Z of the output stage to determine the time course of the current flow I Pr through the primary winding of the ignition coil is specified. In addition, a control signal U st for the burning time t Br - depending on engine parameters such as gasoline-air mixture, speed, engine temperature and engine load - is specified at the control input E st of the switching unit of the output stage.
In addition to the ignition switching device, the output stage has an ignition IC and the output
The ignition coil is switched by the transistor T₁; on the secondary side of the ignition coil, the individual cylinders are assigned to them with or without a distributor via the spark plugs (terminal 3), the combustion voltage U Br being present across the spark plugs and the combustion current I Br flowing. The primary side of the ignition coil is on the other hand connected via the
According to FIG. 2a, the control signal predetermined by the control device and determining the burning time is longer than the maximum burning time, so that a "normal" ignition cycle with an unabridged burning time t Br of, for example, 3 ms, as is required, for example, during a cold start:
- the switching transistor T₁ is controlled by the switching edges U Z generated in the control unit, the current flow through the ignition coil being interrupted when the transistor is switched off and an induction voltage being induced on the primary side of the ignition coil.
- the voltage rise on the primary side of the ignition coil - the primary voltage U Pr or kickback voltage shown in FIG. 2b, which is, for example, 380 to 400 V - is transmitted to the secondary side of the ignition coil by induction.
- If the induction voltage on the secondary side has risen to a certain value (for example 20 kV), the ignition takes place by a sparkover between the spark plug electrodes (ignition timing t Z ); as a result, the voltage on the secondary side drops from 20 kV to approx. 400 V - this is the so-called burning voltage U Br (FIG. 2c).
- the energy stored in the ignition coil during the charging process determines the burning time or burning time t Br ; the combustion current I Br (FIG. 2d) flows or the arc between the spark plug electrodes (the combustion voltage U Br ) is present until the stored energy is consumed or converted into the spark plugs.
- after the ignition process has elapsed, the flashback voltage on the primary side (FIG. 2b) returns from its maximum value (380-400 V) to the operating voltage (for example 12 V).
- since the switching unit of the output stage was not activated during the burning time, no freewheeling current I F flows according to FIG. 2e.
According to FIG. 3a, the control signal (control voltage U st ) specified by the control unit changes from "HIGH" level to "LOW" level after 2 ms, for example, before the maximum possible burning time of 3 ms, for example, and thereby activates the switching unit the output stage that shorts the primary side of the ignition coil:
- 3b, the primary voltage U Pr drops significantly as a result
- 3c, the burning voltage U Br is reduced to a value which is no longer sufficient to maintain the flashover between the spark plug electrodes, the burning process is ended
- According to FIG. 3d, the combustion current I Br goes towards 0 mA immediately after activation of the switching unit
- the freewheeling current I F through the switching unit (FIG. 3e) flows until the energy stored in the coil has been dissipated; the more energy that has to be destroyed, the shorter the specified burning time. The amount of the freewheeling current I F therefore depends on the time of activation of the switching unit; its maximum value can be as large as the primary current with which the coil was charged (t Br = 0). With increasing burning time, I F decreases because part of the stored energy has already been converted in the spark plug.
In Figure 4 an embodiment of the switching unit is shown, in which the switch was realized by the NPN transistor T₂.
The switching unit contains, in addition to the switching transistor T₂, the drive transistor or driver transistor T₃, the resistors R₁ to R₃ and the diodes D₁ and D₂. The resistor R₁ is used to bias the transistor T₂, the resistor R₂ as a protective measure in the event of defects and the resistor R₃ to control the transistor T₃; the diode D₁ is a protective diode for the transistor T₂. The diode D₂ prevents unwanted current flow from terminal 15 through the diode D₁ to the transistor T₁ at the time when the primary side of the ignition coil is to be charged by turning on the transistor T₁; further positive voltage peaks on the supply line are thereby kept away from the emitter of the transistor T₂. The transistor is designed, for example, as a Darlington transistor, the emitter of which is connected to the operating voltage U B via the diode D 2 (terminal 15) and the collectors of which form the output of the switching unit to which

During the desired burning time, the control signal U st at the circuit input E st is at HIGH potential - the transistor T₃ is turned on and thereby blocks the transistor T₂; the switching unit is consequently inactive. When the predetermined burning time is reached, the control input E st is actively switched to ground - the control voltage U st goes to LOW potential - and the transistor T₃ blocks; the voltage surge ΔU pending at
If there is no control voltage U st at the control input E st due to a defect (for example breakage of the E st cable), the transistor T 3 remains blocked and the switching unit would - undesirably - be activated with each ignition immediately after the ignition point and the burning time would be interrupted immediately. To avoid this, the pull-up resistor R₂ is provided, which supplies the operating voltage U B to the base of the transistor T₃, so that it is activated when there is no control voltage U st ; the switching unit is thereby deactivated and an unabridged ignition process with the maximum burning time is made possible.
The switch of the switching unit can also be implemented in another way in addition to the embodiment presented above. For example, the switch can be a PNP transistor, IGBT transistor or field effect transistor, and thyristors can also be used. The transistors can be designed, for example, as Darlington transistors or as triple transistors, which have a large current gain.
In addition, protective measures or protective components for common interference voltages can be provided in the switching unit.
