- a high efficiency of a cooling chamber which surrounds a motor in the form of a jacket, in particular, depends on the fact that the interior of the cooling chamber, through which a coolant flows, is vented as well as possible.
- the flow conditions in the coolant circuit deteriorate due to air or gas bubbles in the interior of the cooling space, and gases also have poor thermal conductivity and do not contribute to cooling the engine.
- cooling chambers are therefore vented.
- a particularly simple way of venting is given by installing a vent pipe in the cooling chamber, which extends from the upper end of the closed cooling chamber to the lower end. Since the existing air collects in the upper area of the cooling chamber when the coolant penetrates, it is guided by the pressure of the coolant through the ventilation pipe, at the lower end of which it can escape.

- the pumped medium pushes the pumped medium out of the pump chamber into the cooling chamber and flows back into the pump chamber through a coolant return.
- the invention has for its object to prevent clogging of the ventilation pipe by dirt particles or the like and to ensure optimal ventilation.
- This object is achieved by a valve which automatically closes the upper end of the vent pipe under the action of coolant flowing into the vent pipe, the valve opening for venting when the coolant level drops below the upper end of the vent pipe.
- the valve according to the invention opens and closes depending on the level of the coolant in the cooling chamber. As soon as the coolant has reached the upper end of the ventilation pipe, the ventilation process is completed and the valve closes the upper end of the ventilation pipe under the suction effect of coolant flowing into the ventilation pipe. In this way, the ventilation pipe is closed, so that coolant can no longer pass through the ventilation pipe and thus no clogging by dirt particles or the like is possible.

- the automatically operating valve is conveniently located at the highest point of the cooling chamber, since this is the only way to ensure that the ventilation is as complete as possible.
- the automatically operating valve has the lowest possible overall height.
- This requirement is e.g. fulfilled by a ball which is provided with at least one elastic holding arm which is fixed to the ventilation pipe and holds the valve ball in a position above the ventilation pipe.
- the outer diameter of the ball is expediently larger than the inner diameter of the vent pipe, so that the ball can sit sealingly on the vent pipe.
- the balls or the holding arms can consist of an elastic, rubber-like material, so that the manufacture of the valve is inexpensive. It has proven to be particularly advantageous to fix the ball to the vent pipe with two elastic holding arms.
- the ball can be centered exactly over the ventilation pipe, the elasticity of the holding arms being selected such that the valve ball is pressed onto the pipe end by the suction effect of coolant flowing into the ventilation pipe, but on the other hand the elasticity of the holding arms is sufficiently large to allow for the Raise the ball into a position over the end of the vent pipe if the suction effect diminishes as the coolant level drops.
- Another advantageous possibility for fixing the holding arms to the vent pipe can be done in that the ends of the holding arms have thickened portions that can be inserted into bores in the vent pipe. The thickening prevents the holding arms from slipping out, so that the valve operates safely.
- valve ball with the holding arms is preferably formed in one piece, so that the overall production is relatively inexpensive.
- valve according to the invention which works approximately like a snorkel head valve
- a valve of a different type can also be used to shut off the ventilation tube, for example a three-way valve which can be plugged onto the ventilation tube and has an inner sealing ball, which blocks the ventilation tube when the cooling chamber is completely full.
- Other valve types are also possible, but it should be noted that their height should be as low as possible.

- a ventilation pipe 8 Inside the cooling chamber 3 extends from its upper end downwards, a ventilation pipe 8, the upper end 9 of which can be closed automatically by a spherical valve 10 as soon as the level of the coolant 6 reaches the upper end 9 of the ventilation pipe.
- the spherical valve 10 is also shown in FIG. 1 in a detailed drawing.
- the ball 10 is fastened to the upper end 9 of the ventilation pipe 8 with elastic holding arms 11, which have thickenings 12 at their ends.
- the thickened ends of the holding arms 11 sit in holes 13 so that they are secured against slipping out.
- the elasticity of the holding arms 11 for the ball 10 is selected such that the ball 10 is pressed onto the upper end 9 of the ventilation pipe 8 by the suction effect of coolant 6, which penetrates into the ventilation pipe 8, and the ball 10 is in a position above that Upper end 9 of the vent pipe 8 is raised as soon as the level of the coolant 6 drops below the upper end 9 of the vent pipe 8.
- FIGS. 2 to 5 show alternative exemplary embodiments of the ball valve which works like a snorkel head valve.
- Fig. 2 corresponds to that of Fig. 1, in the valve shown in Fig. 3, the ends of the elastic holding arms 11 are connected to a sleeve-shaped tube piece 14 which can be pushed onto the upper end 9 of the vent pipe 8. This enables particularly simple assembly.
- the ball 10 is seated only on an elastic holding arm 11, which is attached at its end to a likewise tubular tube piece 14, which can be inserted into the upper end 9 of the ventilation tube 8.
- the elastic holding arms 11 have a non-slip coating 15, so that the ends of the holding arms 11 can be simply pushed over the outer wall of the vent pipe 8 without the risk of the valve shifting.

Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a device for the automatic venting of a liquid-cooled, closed cooling chamber with a coolant inlet and return, preferably for engine cooling of a dirty water pump, by means of a vent pipe passing through the cooling chamber from top to bottom, the coolant preferably being taken from the medium conveyed by the pump and flows back into this.
A high efficiency of a cooling chamber, which surrounds a motor in the form of a jacket, in particular, depends on the fact that the interior of the cooling chamber, through which a coolant flows, is vented as well as possible. The flow conditions in the coolant circuit deteriorate due to air or gas bubbles in the interior of the cooling space, and gases also have poor thermal conductivity and do not contribute to cooling the engine.
According to the prior art, such cooling chambers are therefore vented. A particularly simple way of venting is given by installing a vent pipe in the cooling chamber, which extends from the upper end of the closed cooling chamber to the lower end. Since the existing air collects in the upper area of the cooling chamber when the coolant penetrates, it is guided by the pressure of the coolant through the ventilation pipe, at the lower end of which it can escape.
In order to avoid a separate coolant line, the pumping medium of the pump, e.g. Water, used for cooling. The pumped medium pushes the pumped medium out of the pump chamber into the cooling chamber and flows back into the pump chamber through a coolant return. However, this results in the problem, in particular in the case of dirty water or sludge pumps, that impurities or coarser particles in the conveying medium settle into the relatively narrow vent pipe and block it.
As a result, proper ventilation of the cooling chamber is often no longer possible, so that the ventilation pipe must be removed and cleaned. If the cooling chamber is inadequately vented, there is also the danger that the operating temperature of the engine may rise to an unacceptably high level and damage to the engine is possible.
The invention has for its object to prevent clogging of the ventilation pipe by dirt particles or the like and to ensure optimal ventilation.
This object is achieved by a valve which automatically closes the upper end of the vent pipe under the action of coolant flowing into the vent pipe, the valve opening for venting when the coolant level drops below the upper end of the vent pipe.
The valve according to the invention opens and closes depending on the level of the coolant in the cooling chamber.
During the operating time of the pump, the cooling chamber is completely filled with coolant, so that the valve is always in its closed position. When the coolant level in the cooling chamber drops, the valve opens automatically and releases the upper end of the ventilation pipe, so that the cooling chamber can be completely vented when the pump is started up later.
The automatically operating valve is conveniently located at the highest point of the cooling chamber, since this is the only way to ensure that the ventilation is as complete as possible.
For this reason, it is also expedient that the automatically operating valve has the lowest possible overall height. This requirement is e.g. fulfilled by a ball which is provided with at least one elastic holding arm which is fixed to the ventilation pipe and holds the valve ball in a position above the ventilation pipe. The outer diameter of the ball is expediently larger than the inner diameter of the vent pipe, so that the ball can sit sealingly on the vent pipe. The balls or the holding arms can consist of an elastic, rubber-like material, so that the manufacture of the valve is inexpensive. It has proven to be particularly advantageous to fix the ball to the vent pipe with two elastic holding arms. As a result, the ball can be centered exactly over the ventilation pipe, the elasticity of the holding arms being selected such that the valve ball is pressed onto the pipe end by the suction effect of coolant flowing into the ventilation pipe, but on the other hand the elasticity of the holding arms is sufficiently large to allow for the Raise the ball into a position over the end of the vent pipe if the suction effect diminishes as the coolant level drops.
If the elastic holding arms are connected to a sleeve-shaped piece of pipe which can be inserted into or over the upper end of the vent pipe, this is a particularly simple one and quick assembly of the automatic valve possible. Retrofitting of pump motors is also possible in this way.
Another advantageous possibility for fixing the holding arms to the vent pipe can be done in that the ends of the holding arms have thickened portions that can be inserted into bores in the vent pipe. The thickening prevents the holding arms from slipping out, so that the valve operates safely.
It is also possible to provide the ends of the holding arms with a non-slip coating so that they can simply be slipped over the outer wall and remain there in the intended position.
The valve ball with the holding arms is preferably formed in one piece, so that the overall production is relatively inexpensive.
In addition to the valve according to the invention, which works approximately like a snorkel head valve, a valve of a different type can also be used to shut off the ventilation tube, for example a three-way valve which can be plugged onto the ventilation tube and has an inner sealing ball, which blocks the ventilation tube when the cooling chamber is completely full. Other valve types are also possible, but it should be noted that their height should be as low as possible.
