Description

The present invention relates to a metal box in particular for packaging food, comprising a container for example of substantially cylindrical shape which has a bottom and a lid mounted in leaktight manner on the edge of the container opposite said bottom.

Known boxes of this type are made from a thin sheet of tin, for example covered with a corrosion-resistant coating such as tin. These boxes are completely closed, so that consumers cannot see the contents of the box.

However, since these boxes are sealed, they are intended to be opened only for the immediate consumption of the food they contain. The consumer cannot therefore open these boxes simply to see the nature and quality of the food they contain.

Boxes of this type are currently used to package caviar. However, we know that there are several varieties of caviar that connoisseurs know how to distinguish by their appearance. These different varieties are sold at very different prices.

However, consumers cannot currently examine the contents of boxes of caviar before purchasing them. They are therefore obliged to buy them at the asking price, without being able to verify whether the contents of the box correspond to the quality of the food it contains.

On the other hand, packaging for food is known, in the form of glass jars which, because of their transparency, make it possible to see their content. However, such packaging is relatively heavy, brittle and expensive.

However generally, the plastic can easily be scratched and deteriorate in contact with food.

Patent NL-A-46,207 describes a box provided with a window, but the latter has in particular the disadvantages that it projects outside the container and is insufficiently protected against lateral impacts.

The object of the present invention is to propose a method for creating a metal box, in particular for packaging food, which allows the consumer to see the contents of this box and nevertheless ensures good protection of the window.

The invention therefore relates to a method for the manufacture of a metal can, in particular for the packaging of food, comprising a container which has a bottom and a lid mounted in leaktight manner on the edge of the container opposite said bottom.

The method according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises the following steps:
  • a container is made from a metal sheet by stamping,
  • the external surface of the bottom or of the lid of the container is stamped in order to produce in said bottom or said lid a bowl projecting towards the interior of the container,
  • the bottom of said bowl is cut out,
  • an annular crimped fold projecting towards the axis of the container is produced on the annular part which surrounds the cut opening, this crimped fold being extended by a cylindrical wall part extending towards the interior of the container,
  • a flexible sealing material is applied to said cylindrical wall part,
  • a glass disc is placed in the housing delimited by said cylindrical wall part and the crimped fold and
  • the edge of said cylindrical wall is folded over the glass disc.

Given that this transparent plate is mounted in a sealed manner in the bottom and / or the lid of the metal container, it does not compromise either the rigidity of the box, or the sealing of the latter.

Preferably, this plate is a glass disc which resists scratches and whose transparency is not likely to be impaired by prolonged contact with food.

Other optional features and advantages of the invention will become apparent in the description below.

In the appended drawings given by way of nonlimiting examples:
  • FIG. 1 is a view in elevation and in axial half-section of a metal box according to the invention,
  • FIG. 2 is a section view on an enlarged scale of the detail A of FIG. 1,
  • Figures 3 to 11 are schematic views which illustrate the successive steps of a method of manufacturing the box according to the invention.

In the embodiment of FIGS. 1 and 2, the metal box, in particular for the packaging of food such as caviar, comprises a container 1 of substantially cylindrical shape which has a bottom 2 and a cover 3 mounted in leaktight manner on the edge 4 of the container opposite said bottom 2.

The cover 3 comprises an annular rib 5 projecting inwardly which snaps onto the rolled edge 4 of the container. The cover 3 also includes a seal 6 which rests on the edge 4 of the container 1. The bottom 2 of the container 1 has an opening 7 in which is mounted in a sealed manner a plate made of transparent material constituted in the example represented by a glass disc 8.

Dans l'exemple représenté, le disque en verre 8 occupe plus de la moitié de la surface du fond 2 du récipient 1.In the example shown, the glass disc 8 occupies more than half of the surface of the bottom 2 of the container 1.

It can also be seen in FIGS. 1 and 2 that the peripheral edge 8a of the glass disc 8 is engaged in an annular groove 9 of U-shaped section produced by folding the metal wall of the bottom 2 of the container 1.

De plus, cette gorge 9 fait saillie à l'intérieur du récipient 1.Furthermore, a flexible sealing material 10 is included between the bottom of the U-shaped groove 9 and the edge 8a of the glass disc 8. In addition, this groove 9 projects inside the container 1.

On the other hand, the wing 9a of the U-shaped groove 9 adjacent to the bottom 2 of the container 1 is connected to the wall of said bottom by a fold 11 of this wall, the parts 2a and 9a of this wall adjacent to the fold 11 being applied against each other (see in particular Figure 2).

Thus, the glass disc 8 is separated from the outer surface 2b of the bottom 2 by a distance d corresponding substantially to twice the thickness of the wall of the bottom 2, which shelters the disc 8 the abrasion caused by contact between this disc 8 and a hard surface.

In addition, thanks to the embedding of the glass disc 8 in a U-shaped groove produced by folding the bottom wall 2 of the container, the glass disc 8 is not only perfectly fixed to the bottom 2 but also contributes to the rigidity of this background 2.

The sealing material 10 between the bottom of the groove 9 in a U and the peripheral edge of the disc 8 provides excellent sealing guaranteeing perfect preservation of the food contained in the box.

Furthermore, the glass disc 8 allows the consumer to see the contents of the box. So, if it contains caviar, he can appreciate the quality of it and buy the box with confidence.

In the description which follows, the successive stages of the process for manufacturing a box according to the invention have been described by way of non-limiting example.

In a first step of the manufacturing process, a container 13 is produced by stamping in the metal sheet 12. In a second step (see FIG. 4), the external face of the bottom of the container 13 is stamped to make a bowl 14 in said bottom protruding towards the inside of the container.

Then cutting the bottom 15 of said bowl 14. After a trimming operation of the cut opening 16 (see Figure 5) and the step shown in Figure 6, we realize (see Figure 7) on the annular part 17 which surrounds the cut opening 16, an annular crimped fold 18 projecting towards the axis XX ′ of the container 13. The crimped fold 18 thus formed is extended downwards by a part of cylindrical wall 19 extending towards the inside of the container 13, parallel to the axis XX ′ thereof.

After the sealing material 20 has hardened, the following is placed (see FIG. 9) a glass disc 8 in the housing delimited by the cylindrical wall part 19 and the crimped fold 18.

In a subsequent step, the overhanging edge 19a of the cylindrical wall 19, so as to form an annular groove of U-shaped section enveloping the peripheral edge of the glass disc 8.

In a final step (see FIG. 11), an annular molding 21 is formed on the side wall of the container and its edge 22 is rolled up.

Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiment which has just been described and many modifications can be made to it without departing from the scope of the claims.

Thus the glass disc 8 could also be mounted in a sealed manner in the cover of the box, as defined in claim 1.
