Definitions
- the invention relates to a method according to the preamble of claim 1.
- the fuel vapors generated in the fuel tank are stored in an activated carbon filter and supplied to the combustion chamber of the engine at intervals after opening a ventilation valve.

- the fuel generated in tank 1 vapors are passed through a connecting line 11 into the activated carbon filter 2.
- a connecting line 21 leads from the activated carbon filter 2 via a tank ventilation valve 3 to the intake tract 51 of the internal combustion engine 5.
- the tank ventilation valve 3 can be actuated electrically by a control signal and is controlled by the control unit 4.
- a flow sensor 7 Between the activated carbon filter 2 and the tank ventilation valve 3 there is a flow sensor 7, which emits a flow signal to the control unit 4 when there is a gas flow in the connecting line 21.
- the proper functioning of the tank ventilation is described below.
- the fuel 12 located in the fuel tank 1 evaporates and is conducted via the connecting line 11 into the filter insert 23 of the activated carbon filter 2.

- the fuel vapors bound in the filter insert 23 are emitted and reach the intake tract 51 of the internal combustion engine 5.
- the flow sensor 7 detects whether gas is flowing out of the activated carbon filter 2.
- the pressure relief valve 211 prevents the pressure increases occurring in the dynamic operation of the internal combustion engine 5 in the intake tract 51 - known to the person skilled in the art as pulsations or resonances - reaching the activated carbon filter 2.
- the control unit 4 therefore recognizes the present fault situation by the fact that, when the tank ventilation valve 3 is open, there is no change in the values supplied by the lambda probe 521. The case may occur that after actuation of the tank ventilation valve 3, the mixture supplied to the intake tract 51 happens to have exactly the same distribution of air and fuel components as the mixture supplied to the internal combustion engine by a mixture formation device, not shown here. There will then be no change in the probe signals in the first moment, but with continued flushing of the filter insert 23 the ratio between air and fuel components changes, which is then reflected in a change in the probe signals.
- the tank ventilation valve 3 does not open - error (A) - or does not close - error (B).
- Tank vent valve 3 If the tank ventilation valve 3 is not opened, the detects Flow sensor 7 no air flow. An error is detected from the logical link "Tank vent valve 3 open - no flow signal from flow sensor 7 ⁇ . If the tank vent valve 3 is not closed, the logical link" Tank vent valve closed - flow sensor 7 emits signal "- detects an error.
- control unit 4 recognizes from the logical link "tank ventilation valve open - flow sensor 7 does not supply a flow signal", that there is an error.
- a thermal mass flow sensor as the flow sensor 7. Because of the self-regulating effect in ceramic PTC thermistors and the associated low circuit complexity, a ceramic PTC thermistor is preferably used as flow sensor 7.

Abstract
With the present tank ventilation system, consisting of a fuel tank (1), an activated carbon filter (2), a control unit (4), a lambda probe (521), a tank ventilation valve (3) and a flow sensor (7), errors can be made in the connecting lines and the vent valve can be recognized immediately. To detect the error, means are provided which examine the incoming signals from the lambda probe and the flow sensor with the outgoing control signals for the tank ventilation valve for an implausible course. If an error is detected, the error signal is saved. A ceramic thermistor is preferably used as the flow sensor.
Description
The invention relates to a method according to the preamble of
In known tank ventilation systems, the fuel vapors generated in the fuel tank are stored in an activated carbon filter and supplied to the combustion chamber of the engine at intervals after opening a ventilation valve.
In the known tank ventilation systems, errors can now occur on the connecting lines and the ventilation valve without any error being recognized immediately. The connecting lines can be blocked or leaky, the vent valve can no longer open or close. As a result, until the faults are discovered accidentally, the tank ventilation system does not work properly and fuel vapors escape into the atmosphere.
It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a tank ventilation system in which faults in the system are recognized as quickly as possible.
This object is achieved by the features mentioned in the characterizing part of
Weiterbildungen der Erfindung sind Gegenstand der Unteransprüche.Developments of the invention are the subject of the dependent claims.
The invention is explained in more detail below on the basis of the reference symbols / list of terms and a figure.
The figure shows a schematic representation of the elements of the tank ventilation system. The fuel generated in
The proper functioning of the tank ventilation is described below. The
In the event that the connecting
If the
Two types of defects can occur on the tank ventilation valve 3: The
If the
In the event of an error in
With regard to the technical effort, it is advisable to use a thermal mass flow sensor as the
