Claims (4)

  1. Thread cutting device for zigzag sewing machines, including a stitch plate (19), which is provided with a stitch hole (20), a rotary double back-stitch gripper (16) and a thread catcher (33), which is displaceable in dependence on the angular position of the gripper shaft and has a separating tip, a barb for the section of the needle thread loop extending to the sewing material and the gripper thread, and a cutting edge (30), which severs the threads which are gripped by the barb in co-operation with a cutter blade (28), characterised in that the cutter blade (28) is displaceable in a plane parallel to the thread catcher (33) and is connected, via a transmission unit (45 to 58) having inoperative portions (54, 55), to the driving mechanism of said transmission unit in such a manner that the cutter blade (28) is displaceable, together with the thread catcher (33), from a position of rest situated laterally of the stitch hole (20), with its cutting edge (30), into a cutting position situated in a region beneath the centre of the overstitch width, and it is returnable again into the position of rest, after the threads have been separated and severed by the thread catcher (33), which movers on after the cutter blade (28) has been brought into the cutting position, together with said thread catcher.
  2. Thread cutting device according to claim 1, characterised in that the transmission unit (45 to 58) for the cutter blade (28) has a form-locking configuration.
  3. Thread cutting device according to claims 1 and 2, characterised in that the thread catcher (33) and the cutter blade (28) are disposed and guided on the stitch plate (19) by common means (31), and a driving lever (45) for the thread catcher (33) is connected, via a push rod (48), to an angle lever (52), which is mounted on the stitch plate (19) by means of a pivot pin (51), while the pivot pin (51) engages in a guide slot (49) in the push rod (48), and a pin (50), which is secured to the push rod (48), engages in a control slot (53) in the angle lever (52), and in that the angle lever (52) is pivotally mounted on the cutter blade (28) via an elongate slot-and-pin connection (57, 58).
  4. Thread cutting device according to one or more of claims 1 to 3, characterised in that the thread catcher (33) is provided, on the side remote from the barb (41), at a lateral spacing from the separating tip (34), with a retaining finger (35) for the sections (NN) of the needle thread loop extending to the needle (12).
