Abstract

In the hydrostatic support of the rolls of a rolling mill, the utilisation of the supporting surface available is of particular importance both for centring and for expenditure in terms of energy and costs. However, the hitherto known supporting devices for rolls permit only a relatively low utilisation of the supporting surface available and are therefore afflicted by a correspondingly high expenditure in terms of energy and costs. According to the invention, very high, almost 100% utilisation of the supporting surface of the supporting element is achieved by the fact that each roll (2) is provided with only one supporting element (1), which extends over the entire length of the roll (2) and the shell-shaped recess (3) of which is preferably of elliptical cross-section and that, arranged in the shell-shaped recess of the supporting element (1), are mutually spaced blocking webs (5) which extend transversely to the said element and divide the shell-shaped recess (3) into a plurality of pressure chambers (6) to which the pressure-medium lines (7) are connected. <IMAGE>
