Definitions

  • the invention relates to an element for peripherally sealing a construction that protrudes from a roof, such as e.g. a chimney or dormer, said element being waterproof sealable to the construction and to the sealing portions of the sloping roof, such as e.g. roof tiles.
  • this element comprises strips of plate-shaped lead, a part of each strip being deformed in order to fit closely to the protruding construction, while another part of each strip is deformed in order to fit closely to the upper edges of the roof tiles around said construction.
  • Lead is used in such cases since on the one hand it is heavy enough not to be blown away, while on the other hand it is flexible in order to be bent for closely fitting onto variously formed surfaces, such as roof tiles.
  • the invention aims to use plastic foil for the sealing element since foil is inexpensive and more flexibly deformable than lead.
  • foil has the disadvantage that its weight is so low, that the wind can easily get a grip on it. Therefore the invention is substantially directed towards securing foil by means of roof tiles.
  • the invention is generally characterized in that the element is a sheet of flexible foil of synthetic material, said foil extending at least along the low side, seen with respect to the sloping roof, of the protruding construction and that can be secured in a waterproof sealed manner onto said low side, the foil extending beyond the two ends of the low side of the construction and being sufficiently wide to be clamped at its edge opposite the low side of the construction between the first and second row of roof tiles that follow the protruding construction in the downward inclination of the sloping roof.
  • the invention is preferably characterized in that the foil extends along all four sides of the protruding construction and can be waterproof sealed thereto, said foil at all four sides being sufficiently wide to be clamped between the first row of tiles following the construction, seen in the upward inclination of the sloping roof, and the roof lath for fixing that row of roof tiles, as well as between the roof tiles of the first and second row of roof tiles disposed on either side of the construction in horizontal direction.
  • the invention aims to seal any immaginable construction protruding from a sloping roof against rain water towards the rest of said roof.
  • a roof can be composed of roof tiles and the construction protruding over the roof tiles can e.g. be a chimney, a ventilation pipe, a dormer window or dormer.
  • Figure 1 schematically shows a top view of a protruding construction 1 that is surrounded by a roof-covering of roof tiles 2 through 13 to which roof tiles 14 through 19 are arranged in the usual manner so as to form a tile roof. It goes without saying that each side of the protruding construction can be bounded by another number of roof tiles than the number of drawn roof tiles, for the number of roof tiles on a side of the protruding construction depends on the length of said side.
  • Fig. 2 shows a section along the line II - II in figure 1 in the downward inclination of the tile roof.
  • Fig. 2 shows that according to the invention a foil 20 is joined in a rainwaterproof manner to the protruding construction 1 and extends further until under the roof tile 10 (vide figure 1) that is disposed higher than the position of the protruding construction 1.
  • This roof tile 10 is suspended with its higher end from a usual lath 21, the foil extending up to between this lath and the tile 10 so that the foil is secured there by the weight of the tile 10 and of the tile 19 superimposed thereon.
  • the foil also extends between the batten 24 mounted on the lath 23 and the roof tile 10, so that the foil is secured by the weight of the tile 10.
  • the foil 20 on the, in the downward inclination of the roof, lower side of the protruding construction 1 is secured waterproof and extends further underneath the roof tile 12.
  • This roof tile 12 is suspended with its higher end from a usual lath 25, the foil extending between this lath 25 and the roof tile 12, so that he foil is secured by the weigth of the roof tile.
  • the foil also extends up to between the roof tile 12 and the roof tile 18 disposed underneath and is thus secured by the weight of the roof tile 12.
  • the rain water can be collected at the protruding construction 1 on the foil 20 and flow downwards over the foil to finally end up over the roof tile 18.
  • Figure 3 shows a section along the line III - III in figure 1 in the horizontal direction of the sloping tile roof.
  • the foil 20 is secured in a rainwaterproof sealed manner on the protruding construction 1 and extends up to under the roof tile 3 (vide figure 1) that is disposed horizontal and adjacent to the protruding construction.
  • the foil extends up to between the roof tile 3 and the next roof tile 17 (vide figure 1) so that the foil is secured by the weight of the roof tile 17. In this way, no rain water can get under the foil 20.
  • roof tiles 2, 4 and 5 (vide figure 1) disposed in the same sloping row of roof tiles as roof tile 3, and for the row of roof tiles 6, 7, 8 and 9 that are disposed on the right-hand side of the protruding construction 1.
  • the foil 20 extends between the roof tiles 7 and 14 and is secured there by the weight of roof tile 7.
  • the foil extens further up to between the roof tiles 8 and 15 that according to figure 1 in the sloping direction of the roof follow the roof tiles 7 and 14, respectively, and therefore extend partly over these roof tiles 7 and 14, respectively.
  • the foil has to be wider in the transition between the roof tiles 7 and 14 to 8 and 15, in order to extend both between the roof tiles 7 and 14 and between the roof tiles 8 and 15 as is shown in fig. 4.
  • the foil on the high side of the protruding construction 1 can be replaced by a waterproof underplate 26 that in a waterproof sealed manner joins the protruding construction, a baffling dam 27 of e.g. plastic foam being mounted on said underplate and flexibly joining to the roof tile, so that rain water is prevented from flowing underneath the roof tile 10.
  • the underplate 26 can be of aluminium in order to save weight.
  • the baffle 27 can possibly be complemented by a second baffle in the form of dam 28.
  • the roof parts disposed in horizontal direction on either side of the protruding construction also get more downwards than laterally flowing rain water, it is possible to replace the foil 20 on either side of the protruding construction (vide figure 3) by underplates 26 that join waterproof to the protruding construction as shown in figure 6.
  • dam-shaped baffles of plastic foam are mounted waterproof on the underplates, the flexible plastic foam joining waterproof to the pertaining roof tile 3 and the roof tiles joining thereto in a sloping row, such as roof tile 4 in figure 1.
  • the baffles 27 can, if desired, be complemented by dam-shaped baffles 28. This is also true for the right-hand half of figure 6.
  • the underplates 26 can be made of aluminum.
  • the foil is then adhered to the lower-situated edges of the construction 1 and of the underplates 26 disposed on either side of the construction 1, so that the foil 20 extends only under the roof tiles 2, 12, 13 and 6 (vide figure 1), with which, however, the number of roof tiles depends on the length of the part of the protruding construction 1 adjacent to this row of roof tiles.
  • the foil is of synthetic material, e.g. cross-linked polyethylene, and is so thin that the foil flexibly adjusts to the shape of the parts of the roof tiles between which the foil is clamped, as e.g. between the roof tiles 7, 8, 14 and 15 in figure 3.
  • the foil should be thick enough not to be torn or pierced. Therefore a cross-laminate of at least to kinds of foil can be applied.
  • the foil can be supplied separately from said protruding construction 1, but preferably it is supplied integral with said construction.
  • the adherence between the foil 20 and the protruding construction 1 can be established in many usual ways, e.g. by glueing, cementing or welding or by clamping it in a slit in the edges of the protruding construction 1 and of the possibly applied underplates 25, the foil possibly comprising a beaded edge for clamping.
  • parts of the foil 20 that protrude too far can be cut off after the foil has been arranged between the tiles.
  • the foil protruding past the roof tile 12 above the roof tile 18 in figure 2 can be cut off. This can also be done to the foil 20 protruding past e.g. the roof tile 17 and/or the roof tile 7 and/or the roof tile 8.
