Definitions

  • the invention relates to a method for applying a decoration to an object, in which a support film which is conformable to the object is provided with the decoration and is pressed against the object by evacuating a space accommodating the object until the decoration passes from the support film to the object and the carrier film is then removed from the object.
  • the invention further relates to an apparatus for performing the method.
  • a known method of the type described (EP-A 0 014 615), which is primarily intended for decorating eyeglass frames, is carried out in such a way that an eyeglass frame with its surface to be decorated is placed on a base with each working cycle is arranged within a vacuum chamber and is movable up and down by means of a piston-cylinder unit.
  • the vacuum chamber has a side opening for inserting the eyeglass frame, which can be closed with a door.
  • the vacuum chamber On its upper side, the vacuum chamber has a horizontal, stationary frame which delimits a slot with a frame which is also arranged above it and is horizontal but can be moved up and down.
  • a carrier film is passed through the slot, which is rolled off a reel and is provided on the underside with the decor that is to be applied to the spectacle frame.
  • the decor has, for example, been applied to the carrier film as a multicolor print or as a decal and consists of colors which can be sublimed at a temperature below the destruction temperature of the carrier film.
  • the carrier film is heated to the sublimation temperature of the decor by means of a heating device arranged above the upper frame and then the spectacle frame is moved upwards by means of its base which can be raised and lowered within the vacuum chamber and on which it has been placed, and is pressed against the carrier film.
  • the vacuum causes the carrier film to nestle tightly against the surfaces to be decorated on the front and in lateral areas of the spectacle frame. This state is maintained for a period of time sufficient for the colors forming the decor to migrate away from the carrier film into the structure of the material of the spectacle frame.
  • the vacuum is then released, the spectacle frame is lowered and thereby separated from the carrier film and finally removed from the vacuum chamber.
  • the carrier film is greatly stretched in individual areas so that it nestles sufficiently against the spectacle frame. It is inevitable that the decor will be distorted in the particularly stretched areas of the carrier film. The distortions can be compensated to a certain extent by correcting them from the outset Decor is applied to the carrier film.
  • distortions in objects such as spectacle frames, whose surfaces to be decorated are relatively narrow, are hardly noticeable. It is different with objects that are to be decorated over a large area. With such objects, disturbing distortions of the decor cannot always be avoided if the decor has been applied by the known method.
  • the size of the surface to be decorated increases, the risk that the decor will be adversely affected by air pockets.
  • the objects for example tin cans
  • a coating system which applies a layer of dye-affine, migration-preventing plastic to the outside of the objects.
  • the coated objects are fed to an labeling machine, in which decor carriers in the form of printed banderoles are removed from a stack or endless strips, placed around each object and fixed with an adhesive strip, glue line, electrostatic field or the like will.
  • the objects are then heated, for example by means of hot air, to a temperature of 200 ° to 350 ° C., preferably 250 ° to 300 ° C.
  • the invention is therefore based on the object of developing a method for applying a decor to an object in such a way that even large-area decorations can be applied without disturbing distortions and other damage.
  • the object is achieved, starting from a method of the type described above, in that the carrier film is placed on the object before the room is evacuated and the object together with the carrier film is covered with a cover film on which the presence of the carrier film is evacuated there is an independent pressure difference between the room and its surroundings.
  • the surface structure of the object to be decorated or a coating applied to the object to accommodate the decoration ensures that the readiness of the carrier film to slip on the object is less than the ability of the cover film to hold it during of the evacuation occurring slide on the carrier film. Therefore, there is generally no danger that the cover film will move the carrier film on the object when it is stretched. If, however, such a danger does not occur from the beginning given the surface structure of the object, it is advantageous that one of the two films is provided with a sliding layer on its side facing the other of the two films before the space is evacuated.
  • the sliding layer can, for example, be applied to the carrier film before the decoration is provided.
  • an air-permeable material is used as the carrier film.
  • paper, nonwoven or textile material can be considered as such a material.
  • the decor consists of one or more heat-sublimable colors, it is finally advantageous to carry out the process according to the invention in such a way that the decor, after the evacuation of the space containing the object and the carrier film, through the cover film and the carrier film is heated through, preferably by means of heat radiation.
  • the channels can be connected to a compressed air source after the frame has been lifted off, so that the carrier film can be ventilated or blown away completely after it has served its purpose.
  • the device is preferably further developed in that at least one heat radiation source directed onto the cover film is arranged above the frame.
  • plate-shaped objects 10 for example ceramic tiles, are on their top to decorate.
  • a table 12 is provided for placing several such objects 10 in each case, on the flat surface 14 of which a plurality of channels 16 open, which can be connected together to a vacuum pump (not shown).
  • the surface 14 of the table 12 has a flat edge 18 around the mouths of the channels 16.
  • the objects 10 are placed on the table 12 either by hand or by means of a conventional device in such a way that narrow spaces remain between them, in which at least some of the channels 16 open.
  • a carrier film 20 which, for example, is made of paper and is printed on its underside with a decoration 22 which is either the same for all objects 10 to be printed simultaneously or designed in this way is that individual objects or groups of objects are assigned different motifs.
  • the decor 22 consists of colors that are sublimable in the heat.
  • an air-impermeable cover film 24 made of plastic is arranged on the underside of a frame 26 and kept moderately stretched so that it sags easily.
  • the frame 26 can be raised and lowered either by hand or by means of a mechanical or hydraulic lifting device, so that it can be lowered from the rest position shown in FIG. 1 into the working position shown in FIG. 2.
  • a central region of the cover film 24 touches the carrier film 20 first, so that air contained between the films 20 and 24 flows out toward the frame 26.
  • an edge region of the cover film 24 fastened to the underside of the frame 26 lies tightly on the edge 18 of the table 12.
  • the cover film 24 now delimits a space 28 in which the objects 10 lying on the table 12 and the carrier film 20 lying thereon are received.
  • the channels 16 are already connected to the vacuum source mentioned while the frame 26 is being lowered. As soon as the frame 26 has reached its working position, the space 28 is evacuated and, as a result, the cover film 24 is deformed in the manner shown in FIG. 2. The cover film 24 is pressed onto the carrier film 20 by the excess pressure prevailing in the environment.
  • a plurality of heat radiation sources 30, for example infrared radiators, are attached to a bridge 32 arranged above the table 12.
  • the heat radiation sources 30 are switched on as soon as the intended negative pressure in the space 28 is at least approximately reached.
  • the heat radiation emanating from the heat radiation sources 30 penetrates the cover film 24 and the carrier film 20 and heats the colors which form the decor 22 so that they reach a sublimable state and penetrate into the surface of the objects 10 which have previously been coated with dye-affine, migration-preventing plastic may have been.
  • the space 28 is ventilated through the channels 16 and then the frame 26 including the cover film 24 is raised. With the compressed air subsequently introduced through the channels 16, the carrier film 20 can be lifted off the objects 10 and removed. Finally, the decorated items 10 are removed by hand or with an automatic device.
