Definitions
- the present invention relates to a modular inhalation tower for laboratory animals comprising two concentric vertical conduits around the vertical axis of this tower which comprises several stages each of which has a tray for supporting individual inhalation chambers and conduits of radial connections, grouped by stages and distributed equiangularly on each stage, to connect each inhalation chamber to the internal central distribution conduit, the external central conduit for evacuating the inhaled gas having openings concentric with each of said connection conduits in communication with each of said inhalation chambers with the external central exhaust duct.
- the aerosol is distributed continuously through a small tube to the nose of each animal and is aspirated at the exit of this tube without having come into contact with other parts of the body. animal or with other animals.
- the construction of a modular inhalation tower with a support tray on each floor was proposed in a technical note published in the spring of 1986 by the Geneva research center of the Battelle Memorial Institute.
- the object of the present invention is precisely the production of such a modular inhalation tower which has a very large capacity with a space requirement reduced to a minimum.
- the inhalation tower proposed in the technical note mentioned above was made of PVC, the increase in capacity creates heating problems and therefore heat dissipation which required the use of metal to allow better evacuation of heat by simple convection with ambient air. This change in material led to modifications in the construction of the cooling tower.
- the present invention relates to an inhalation tower as defined by claim 1.
- This inhalation tower comprises two coaxial vertical conduits 1, 2 which form a column which carries a series of circular plates 3 regularly spaced and each defining a stage intended to receive individual inhalation chambers 4.
- These chambers are generally tubular in shape ending in a front part in the shape of a rectangular truncated cone 4a, which ends at a cylindrical end 4b, intended to engage in a housing 5 formed in the wall of the external conduit 2, an O-ring seal 6 being in a groove in the cylindrical wall of the housing 5.
- the bottom of this housing 5 is pierced with an opening 7 which puts it in communication with the interior of the external conduit 2 and which lets a distribution pipe 8 pass through its center which is screwed into the wall of the internal duct 1.
- Each of the internal conduits 1 and external 2 constituting the column is formed of nested segments 11 respectively 12 whose width corresponds to the height of a stage of the inhalation tower.
- the upper end of each segment 11 and 12 has an external annular bearing surface 9 respectively 10 while the lower ends of these segments 11 and 12 comprise internal annular bearing surfaces 13, respectively 14.
- the respective diameters of the external bearing surfaces 9 and 10 are complementary to the respective diameters of the internal surfaces so that the lower ends of the respective segments 11 and 12 can fit on the upper ends of the respective adjacent segments.
- the height of the internal surface 14 of the external segment 12 is less than that of the external surface 10 of this same segment, thus providing an annular space intended to receive the internal edge of a circular plate 3.
- the external face of the external conduit 2 has an annular clearance 15 which extends between the stage of housings 5 and the external bearing 10, providing an annular projection 16 adjacent to the external bearing 10.
- Four equidistant bores 17 are formed perpendicular to the plane of this annular projection 16. They correspond to four threads 18 formed perpendicular to the plane of the opposite end face of the same segment 12.
- An angular offset corresponding to a half pitch separating the housings 5 exists between the holes 17 passing through the annular projection 16 and the threads 18 formed at the other end, so that the successive rows of housings are offset by half a step with respect to each other.
- the circular plates 3 also have four equidistant holes intended to correspond to the holes 17 and the threads 18.
- a screw 19 is introduced into each of the threads 18 through the respective holes 17 and the holes of the circular plate 3, thus making all the segments 2 and the trays 3 secured to each other over the entire height of the inhalation tower.
- This disc 20 is fixed in its center to a disc of smaller diameter 23 which adapts to a central opening of the support frame 21.
- a supply pipe 24 is rotatably mounted in the center of the disc 23.
- a closed space 25 is formed between the two discs 20 and 23. This space 25 communicates with the collector of gas inhaled by animals, formed between the internal and external conduits 1 and 2 by holes 26 formed through the disc 20.
- a hole of smaller diameter 27 passes through the center of the disc 20 and is intended for the complete evacuation of the water during cleaning.
- the central column is closed by a flange 28 which adjusts on the external 12 and internal 11 segments and which carries a supply tube 29 rotatably mounted in its center.
- This tube 29 is intended to be connected to a source of gas or aerosol to be inhaled. Since the flange fits over the ends of the two segments 11 and 12, the gas or aerosol leaving the tube 29 is introduced into the internal conduit 1.
- Each of the plates has a circular rib 30 for the radial positioning of the inhalation chambers 4 which each has a pair of projections 4c intended to engage inside this circular rib 30. Outside this rib 30, the plate 3 comprises an annular channel 31 intended to collect the urine and the excrement of the animals.
- the inhalation tower which has just been described has many advantages. Its capacity according to its volume is high, its modular design allows to adapt the height of the tower according to the needs. This modular design also offers a great advantage for cleaning. The heat released by the dozens of animals that this tower can receive can be removed by natural convection between the ambient air and the metal parts that make up this tower. The rotary mounting of this tower on its support also saves space, insofar as it is not necessary to have access to this tower over its entire periphery but only over part of it.
