Description

The present invention relates to a protective helmet for driver or passenger of vehicles, comprising a shell, rigid and impact resistant, intended to protect the forehead, the top of the skull, the temples, the occipital part of the skull as well as the neck and chinstrap associated with said shell to secure the helmet and prevent its tearing in the event of impact.

Various solutions have already been proposed for, on the one hand, trying to ensure that a helmet has a protective role for the head and neck whatever the stresses it undergoes on impact, and, on the other hand, trying to to avoid the helmet being torn off following these shocks and this, while trying to keep the helmet a certain comfort, a certain ease of use and a possibility of removing the helmet when it has undergone a deformation following a accident. However, these various solutions have the drawback of having gaps in one or other of the fields mentioned above.

The invention aims to remedy this drawback and to provide a helmet whose shell, made in one piece, is designed to offer equal resistance over its entire surface and thus ensure effective protection of all vulnerable parts and fragile of the head and the nape of the neck, this helmet also offers the following advantages: easy and automatic subjection of the helmet thanks to its articulated chin strap, great ease of introduction and removal of the head, blocking of the chin strap in operating position in view to prevent the helmet from being torn off under impacts and regardless of the direction of these impacts and possibility of removing the helmet even in the event of deformation of its shell.

To this end, according to the invention, one end of the chin strap is rotatably mounted on a pivot fixed to the shell and whose axis is substantially parallel to a passing straight line. by the ears, the other end of the chin strap being assembled to the hull by means of means provided with a control member, mounted for rotation on a pivot fixed to the hull and with an axis substantially parallel to the aforementioned straight line , and arranged to move the chin strap between two extreme positions, a first position allowing either the fitting of the helmet or the release of the head of the latter, in which the chin strap is projected in front of the chin to completely release the opening of the helmet and a second position, corresponding to the securing of the helmet, in which the part of the chin strap intended to bear under the chin to secure the helmet is in support under the chin, said means being further arranged so that, on the one hand , when the chinstrap is moved from its first to its second extreme position, each point of the aforesaid part of the chinstrap substantially describes an arc of a circle whose center is located on the axis of the pivot autou r which rotates the control member in order to bypass the chin and then, when said part is located opposite the place where it rests under the chin, secure the helmet, so that this chin strap part is animated by a movement translational, substantially rectilinear, in the direction of the axis of said pivot to take firm support under the chin and, on the other hand, when the chin strap goes from the second to the first extreme position, the aforesaid part of the chin strap moves away chin in a substantially rectilinear translational movement to move away from the axis of said pivot to then describe its substantially circular movement in order to bypass the chin and release the opening of the helmet, the aforementioned means comprising means for blocking the chin strap when it occupies its second extreme position.

According to a particular embodiment of the invention, the two ends of the chin strap are assembled to the shell by means of the aforementioned means, these being identical and each comprising the above-mentioned control member and the locking means for the chin strap, these control members being mounted on pivots fixed to the shell and whose axes are coincident and substantially parallel to the right passing through the ears.

According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the control members of the aforementioned means are joined together by a hoop, the latter being arranged to be located in front of the chin, to completely release the opening of the helmet, when the chin strap occupies its first aforementioned extreme position.

According to a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, the aforementioned arch is profiled so as to constitute a chin rest.

The helmet according to the invention and illustrated in the drawings comprises a shell 1 (shown in dotted lines in Figures 1 to 3), made in one piece, in a rigid and impact-resistant material, which is intended to protect all the vulnerable parts of the head, namely at least the forehead, the top of the skull, the temples, the occipital part of the skull as well as the nape of the neck, and a chin strap 2 associated with the shell 1 to firmly secure the helmet and prevent it from being torn off in the event of impact , whatever the direction of it. In the embodiment of the helmet shown in Figure 1, the end 3 of the chin strap 2 is rotatably mounted on a pivot 4 fixed to the shell and whose axis 5 is parallel to a straight line 6 (Figure 9) by the ears, the end 7 of the chin strap 2 being assembled to the shell 1 by means of means 8 comprising a control member 9, mounted for rotation on a pivot 10 fixed to said shell 1 and of axis 11 substantially parallel to line 6 above. These means 8 are arranged to move the chin strap 2 between two extreme positions, a first position (shown in broken lines) allowing either the fitting of the helmet, or the release of the head thereof, in which the chin strap 2 is projected in front of the chin in order to completely release the opening located at the base of the helmet and a second position (shown in solid lines) corresponding to the securing of the helmet, in which the part 12 of the chin strap 2 intended to rest under the chin to secure the helmet is supported under the chin. The means 8 are also arranged so that, on the one hand, when the chin strap 2 is moved from its first to its second extreme position, each point of the part 12 of the chin strap substantially describes an arc of a circle, the center is located on the axis of the pivot 10 around which the control member 9 rotates in order to bypass the chin and then, when the part 12 of the chin strap is located opposite the place where it rests under the chin to secure the helmet, so that this part 12 of the chin strap is animated by a substantially rectilinear translational movement in the direction of the axis 11 of the pivot 10 in order to approach the chin and take firm support under the chin and, on the other hand , when the chin strap 2 goes from its second to its first extreme position, the part 12 of the chin strap moves away from the chin in a substantially rectilinear translational movement to move away from the axis 11 of the pivot 10 and then describe its substantially circular movement in order to bypass the chin and completely release the opening located at the base of the helmet, the means 8 further comprising blocking means 13 (FIG. 5) for immobilizing the latter when it occupies its second position extreme ion and thus allow the chin strap to effectively oppose the tearing of the helmet regardless of the stresses it undergoes under impact.

In the embodiment of the helmet illustrated in FIG. 2, the two ends 3 and 7 of the chin strap 2 are each assembled to the shell 1 by means 8 as described above. These means 8, associated with said ends 3 and 7 of the chin strap are identical and each comprise a control member 9 and the blocking means 13 of the chin strap when the latter occupies its second extreme position, the two control members 9 being mounted on two pivots 10 fixed to the shell 1. The axes 11 of these pivots 10 are coincident and substantially parallel to the straight line 6 above. The control members 9 are to be actuated separately and simultaneously to move the chinstrap 2 from its first position to the second extreme position and vice versa.

To facilitate the control of the chin strap 2 and allow it with one hand, the control members 9 are advantageously, as illustrated in Figure 3, joined together by a hoop 14 joining the ends of said members 9 opposite the pivots 10. This arch 14 is arranged to be able to be projected in front of the chin, to completely release the opening located at the base of the helmet, when the members 9 occupy their position corresponding to the first extreme position of the chin strap 2. This arch 14 is advantageously profiled, as shown in FIG. 4, to constitute, in the case of a so-called "full face helmet", a chin guard 15 intended to protect the chin from shocks. This chin guard 15 is advantageously profiled to adapt to the shape of the shell 1 and to rest on the latter, along the lines 16, when the chin strap 2 occupies its second extreme position and so that the forces resulting from impacts on the chin guard are taken up by shell 1.

To prevent the helmet from being torn off in the event of an impact, the blocking means 13 of the chin strap are arranged to oppose, when the chin strap 2 occupies its second extreme position, that is to say under pressure under the chin, to any rotational movement of said chin strap 2 about the axis 11 of the pivot (s) 10 of the single control member or of the two control members 9 and to any transverse movement of said chin strap, in one direction or in the other, with respect to said axis 11.

To avoid accidental displacement, in the event of an impact, of the control member (s) 9, the helmet according to the invention advantageously comprises, as shown in FIGS. 4 and 8 to 10, immobilization means 17 of the control member (s) relative to the shell 1. These means 17 are arranged to oppose any movement of rotation of the member (s) 9, around the axis 11 of the pivot (s) 10, when they occupy their position corresponding to the second extreme position chin strap 2, that is to say the helmet fastening position.

As illustrated in FIGS. 5 to 7, the means 8, via which the end or ends 3 and 7 of the chin strap 2 are mounted on the shell 1 of the helmet, comprise a lug 18 fixed to this shell and with a parallel axis to the right 6 above passing through the ears, a notch 19, profiled to ensure the rotational and translational movements of the chin strap 2, produced at the end of the chin strap (3, 7) and in which the lug 18, a first link 20 whose end 21 is pivotally mounted on the control member 9, while its other end 22 is pivotally mounted on the end 3, 7 of the chin strap, a second link 23 whose end 24 is pivotally mounted on the chin strap 2 around a axis 25 common to the first link 20 and the other end 26 of which is pivotally mounted on the shell 1 of the helmet, the axes 25, 27 and 28 of the links 20 and 23 being parallel to the above-mentioned straight line 6. Said means 8 also comprise a lug 29, with an axis parallel to the right 6, fixed to the chin strap 2 and intended to come into abutment, when the latter passes from its first extreme position to its second extreme position, against a ramp 30 provided in the shell 1 of the helmet to engage in a rectilinear recess 31 formed in said shell and oriented towards the pivot 10 around which the control member 9 rotates.

The aforementioned blocking means 13 of the chin strap 2 when the latter occupies its second extreme position, that is to say its position for securing the helmet, consist, on the one hand, of this recess 31, which traps the lug 29 and thereby prevents any movement of rotation of the chin strap 2 and, on the other hand, by a second recess 32 formed in the control member 9 and extending in a direction substantially perpendicular to the recess 31. In this recess 32 is housed the common axis 25 of the rods 20 and 23, the confinement of said axis 25 in this recess 32 opposing any movement of translation of the chin strap to approach or move away from the pivot 10 on which the control member 9 is articulated.

The abovementioned immobilization means 17 of the control member (s) 9 relative to the shell 1 of the helmet when the chin strap 2 occupies its position for securing the helmet (second extreme position) can be formed, as shown in FIG. 4, by a male element 33 fixed to the shell and by a corresponding female element 34 provided in the member 9, these elements being arranged to ensure the automatic locking of the member 9 on the shell 1 when said member 9 occupies its position corresponding to the second extreme position of the chinstrap 2, a control button 35 being provided on the shell to unlock the member 9.

The above-mentioned immobilization means 17 can also be constituted, as shown in FIGS. 8 to 10, by two flexible elements 36 fixed, at their end 37, to the shell 1 and sliding in two channels 38 formed at the base of the chin rest 15 The ends 38ʹ of the elements 36 are profiled to automatically engage in the lugs 39 of a lock 40 which retains them firmly when the chin rest is in its position which corresponds to the securing of the helmet (FIG. 9). The lock 40 is arranged so that a pressure exerted, along arrow 41 and from inside the helmet, releases the elements 36 and allows the movement of the chin strap 15 (FIG. 10) which projects the chin strap 2 in front of the chin. To allow movement of the chin guard, in the event of deformation of the latter which would prevent the sliding of the elements 36 in the channels 38, said flexible elements 36 are assembled to the shell 1 of the helmet by screws 42 which, when they are unscrewed allow the ends 37 of said elements 36 to be released.

It should be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments described and that many modifications can be made to these without departing from the scope of this patent.

Thus, in particular that, on the one hand, the means 8 could be constituted by cams which would provide the chinstrap 2 with the movement described above and, on the other hand, the locking and immobilizing means 17 aforementioned could be constituted by latches with automatic snap-fastening.
