Abstract

Body armor comprising a plurality of laminated fabric layers from aramid yarn, wherein the filaments of the armid yarn have an individual titer of less than 1.5 dtex.

Description

According to the preamble of claim 1, the invention relates to a bullet-resistant protective vest consisting of a plurality of layers of fabrics made of aramid yarn, one on top of the other.

Protective vests of this type are known, for example, from Melliand Textile Reports 6/1981, pages 463 to 468. It is pointed out there that fabrics made from fine aramid yarns, e.g. In ballistic terms, 220 or 440 dtex are cheaper than fabrics made from coarser yarns. Furthermore, it is reported there that, because of the high cost of the fine yarns, a fineness of 1100 dtex is generally used and an increase in the total basis weight is accepted to compensate for the somewhat poorer ballistic properties. It is understood that these titer details all relate to the total titer of the aramid yarns used.

From the cited literature reference it can be concluded that with the same basis weight of all the layers of aramid fabrics used, the ballistic protection is increased by reducing the total titer of the aramid yarns used, or to achieve the same ballistic protection by reducing the total titer of the aramid yarns used, the total weight per unit area is reduced and thus the comfort can be improved.

The object of the present invention is to provide a further type of protection of the type mentioned at the outset, in which the ballistic protection is likewise increased with the same total basis weight of the layers of aramid fabrics or the total basis weight is reduced with the same ballistic protection and the wearing comfort can thus be improved.

According to the invention, this object can be achieved in a protective vest of the type mentioned at the outset in that the filaments of the aramid yarn have an individual titer of less than 1.5 dtex, preferably an individual titer of 0.8 to 1.4 dtex.

In the patent literature, aramid yarns with a single titer of less than 1.5 dtex are described, but such yarns have not yet been available on the market.

An aramid yarn has recently become known whose filaments have an individual titer of 1.58 dtex, which are used in ballistic laminates in combination with other yarns (US Pat. No. 4,181,768).

However, the ballistic characteristics of ballistic laminates and ballistic multi-layer fabrics are not comparable.

Als günstige Einzeltiter der Filamente des Aramidgarnes beim Einsatz in geschoßhemmenden Schutzwesten gattungsgemäßer Art haben sich 1,46 dtex, 1,12 dtex und 0,84 dtex erwiesen.1.46 dtex, 1.12 dtex and 0.84 dtex have proven to be favorable single titer of the filaments of the aramid yarn when used in bullet-resistant protective vests of the generic type.

The object on which the invention is based is particularly well achieved if not only the individual titer of the filaments is reduced in the aramid yarns, but also the total titer is less than 1100 dtex, preferably less than 850 dtex.

The invention is explained with reference to the attached figure.

The protective vest can be assembled externally like known vests (not shown). Between the materials visible from the outside there is a bullet-resistant protective vest consisting of several layers 1 of fabrics made of aramid yarns, which can be connected to one another, for example, by sewing. In order to prevent the so-called dream effect, a shock absorber 2 can be arranged on the body side of police vests. A shock absorber is not necessary for splinter protection vests in the military sector.

According to the invention, it has been found that the ballistic effect is significantly improved by using aramid yarns, the filaments of which have a single titer of less than 1.5 dtex, for the production of the fabric layers 1.
