Definitions
- the invention relates to a method and a device for the regeneration of filter systems for the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines by oxidation of deposited particles, in which the soot combustion is initiated during engine operation by a burner, the flame of which is directed directly at the filter material.
- Exhaust aftertreatment systems are used to reduce particle emissions from diesel engines. These post-treatment systems essentially consist of filter systems that collect and collect the solid parts of the particle phase. The particles deposited in the filter lead to an increase in the flow resistance in the exhaust system. The increasing exhaust gas back pressure causes an increase in fuel consumption as a function of torque and speed, and in extreme cases it can lead to the engine stopping. For this reason, it is necessary to continuously or intermittently remove the particles deposited in the filter. This is generally done by oxidation of the deposited particles.
- the oxidation of the particles in the filter sets in at temperatures above 500-550 degrees C. If special catalytic coatings are used, soot oxidation can be carried out at 400-450 degrees Celsius. Such high temperatures are only reached by diesel engines in the upper load range. Therefore, a sufficiently frequent filter regeneration is not ensured when driving.
- the invention has for its object to provide a method for the regeneration of filter systems for the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines and a device suitable for carrying out the method, in which or the secondary energy required for regeneration compared to known systems to achieve greater economy with simpler and appropriate construction is reduced. Mechanically moving parts are also to be saved in the exhaust gas flow.
- US Pat. No. 4,299,600 describes a separator in the exhaust pipe of a diesel engine which contains a controlled flap which separates the collection and regeneration parts.
- the regeneration is carried out by introducing fuel through nozzles, the exhaust gases being selectively passed through the flap into one of two filter units.
- moving parts e.g. Fuel gas guiding devices and flaps are provided in the exhaust gas stream, and the flames cannot directly hit the deposited soot for the purpose of lighting.
- DE-OS 3 219 94 has disclosed a method of the type described in the introduction, in which a single diesel burner generates a flame directed towards the filter inlet surface in front of the particle filter in the exhaust gas stream.
- the entire exhaust gas passed through the particle filter by the internal combustion engine must therefore mix with the hot exhaust gas from the burner, and the engine and the burner exhaust gas must ensure the required soot ignition temperature in the mixture in the mixture.
- a flame beam with a short burning time compared to the regeneration time on a filter surface of one of the filters or filter areas with such a direction and is directed with such a high flow rate that it displaces the exhaust gases to be cleaned from the filter surface against which the flame jet flows and at the same time initiates regeneration.
- a device for performing the above-mentioned method is provided with means which, in the case of a fitler system with at least two filters or filter areas, cause a flame beam with a short burning time in comparison to the regeneration time to a filter surface of one of the filters or filter areas with such Direction and is directed at such a high flow rate that it displaces the exhaust gases to be cleaned from the filter surface against which the flame jet flows and at the same time initiates regeneration, the means containing a separate burner for each filter or filter area.
- the nozzle-like flame outlet opening of the burner is preferably arranged at such a distance from the filter face surface that the burner flame does not mix with the engine exhaust gas, but instead displaces it to areas to be regenerated later. It is thus achieved that the soot ignites and burns at the low energy supply both at the low temperature supply and through the reaction of the soot with the radicals in the flame, which reduce the activation energy for soot combustion. Since the burner flame does not mix with the exhaust gas mass flow of the engine due to the advantageous arrangement and design of the burner, the energy loss of the regeneration system is minimized, so that the necessary energy expenditure is comparatively low compared to conventional burner systems with heat transport through the engine exhaust gas.
- the burner can be operated with diesel fuel or also with a gas or another fluid fuel.
- the combustion air required for the brief, pulsed burner operation is provided from a pressure vessel, which e.g. in commercial vehicles is advantageously intermittently charged by the compressor system for the vehicle brake.
- FIG. 1 shows a burner arrangement for initiating soot oxidation.
- Several particle filters are arranged with an intermediate mat 2 (2 ') in a sheet metal jacket 3 (3'), which is connected to the exhaust pipe 4 of the (not shown) internal combustion engine.
- the exhaust gas to be cleaned flows in the direction of arrow 5 to the filters 1 (1 ').
- Burners 7 (7 ') are installed in the wall 6 of the exhaust pipe 4 in such a way that their flame is directed onto the end faces 8 (8') of the filters 1 (1 ').
- the burners 7 (7 ') consist of a nozzle-shaped burner mouth 9 (9') and a combustion chamber 10 (10 ').
- the connection of the combustion chamber 10 (10') to the exhaust pipe 4 is provided with cooling fins 11 (11 ').
- the heat supply from the exhaust gas is reduced by heat conduction to the combustion chamber 10 (10 '), which can reduce the risk of coking when the burner is at a standstill.
- the burner 7 (7 ') also has a fuel feed 12 (12') with a fuel valve 13 (13 '), air fuel injector 14 (14') and burner nozzle 15 (15 ') to the atomizer 16 (16') and an air feed 17 (17 ').
- the combustion air is extracted from storage container 18, which e.g. is filled by the brake compressor of the vehicle (not shown).
- air valve 19 (19 ') and fuel valve 13 (13') are opened by a control line 20 (20 ').
- the combustion air flows from the air container 18 via line 17 (17 ') to the injector 14 (14') and the burner nozzle 15 (15 ') and to the secondary air line 21 (21'), the amount being supplied by a fixed throttle 22 (22 ') is adjustable.
- the secondary air can be introduced tangentially and axially and is used for better mixing and burning out of the combustion chamber.
- the fuel can e.g. can be transported from a pre-feed pump (not shown) with sufficient pressure to supply the fuel 12 (12 ') and is carried by the injector 14 (14').
- the fuel and air are intimately mixed in the injector 14 (14 ') and the fuel-air mixture is atomized into the combustion chamber 10 (10') at the nozzle-like atomizer 16 (16 ').
- the fuel-air mixture is ignited with igniter 23 (23 ').
- a high-voltage radio ignition can serve as the igniter, as can a glow tube or glow plug made of ceramic.
- the arrangement of the burner and filter is not limited to two systems.
- the filter does not have to be made up of several filter monoliths. Rather, the various regeneration areas can be created by arranging burners whose flames affect different surface areas of the filter.
- FIG. 2 shows a section of the combustion chamber 10 consisting of the air supply line 17, fuel supply 12 and injector 14 and atomizing nozzle 16. In this area the ignition takes place with an electrically heated glow tube 24, e.g. B. made of ceramic. The fuel-air mixture strikes the glow tube 24 as it emerges from the atomizer nozzle 16 and is reliably ignited on the wall by the high temperatures.
- an electrically heated glow tube 24 e.g. B. made of ceramic.
- the fuel-air mixture strikes the glow tube 24 as it emerges from the atomizer nozzle 16 and is reliably ignited on the wall by the high temperatures.
- the invention is not particularly limited with regard to the structure and mode of operation of the burner 7, and other suitable burner types can also be used. Not only ceramic filters with a honeycomb structure, but also steel wool filters and ceramic foam with and without catalytic coating have proven themselves as filter systems for collecting the particles with intermittent or continuous particle combustion.
- the invention enables simple and particularly effective filter regeneration with a low secondary energy requirement and without an obstructing flow guide device.
