Description

The subject of the invention is a device for axially holding a roller mounted to rotate about its axis in a fixed frame.

In certain applications, for example in devices for continuously planing metal strips, rollers are used which rotate about an axis but which cannot, for various reasons, be fixed on bearings intended to hold them in position, because they must have a degree of freedom in the axial direction and simply be kept radially in their working position. Such a roller is therefore mounted in abutment on rollers or on a support roller and its rotation shaft is equipped at its ends with axial support stops which come into contact, either in one direction or in the other with support plates mounted on the support frame, according to the axial stresses of variable direction which are exerted in service. Normally, each support stop consists of a ball mounted at one end of the rotation shaft of the roller and capable of being supported on a wear plate of suitable shape mounted at the desired location on the frame. The ball turns with the roller when it is not in contact but is stopped in a very short time when it comes into contact with the wear plate. It is therefore fixed on a support rotatably mounted around the axis of rotation, at the end of the shaft. The devices used for this purpose so far, give satisfaction up to speeds of about 3500 rpm. However, we are now led to consider much higher rotational speeds, of the order of 10 to 12,000 rpm and the inertia of the rotating support is then too great to allow it to stop under good conditions. rotation when the ball comes into contact with the frame.

The subject of the invention is a new axial holding device, making it possible, thanks to a particular arrangement, to reduce the inertia of the rotating parts and to provide support by a ball of small diameter by reducing the heating produced by friction during contacts with support plates and therefore operate at very high speeds of rotation.

In accordance with the invention, at each end of the shaft of the roller, the support ball is crimped at the end of a support piece consisting of a nozzle limited laterally by a cylindrical face comprising a delimiting shoulder, side of the roller, a base with an enlarged section placed inside a housing formed at the end of the roller and limited, on the side of the roller, by a transverse bottom and, on its periphery, by a cylindrical side wall, said enlarged base bearing, in the axial direction on the bottom of the housing, by means of an axial stop and in the transverse direction, on the lateral wall of the housing, by means of a centering bearing of the end piece on the axis of rotation, the assembly being held by a housing closure cap, fixed to the side wall of the latter and comprising a flat bottom pierced with an orifice for passage of the end piece and bearing, in the axial direction, on the ep aulement of the lateral face of the nozzle.

Advantageously, the centering bearing of the enlarged base on the side wall of the housing is a needle bearing.

On the other hand, the roller not being held by bearings but by radial support, generally on another roller, its axis of rotation can be caused to move slightly parallel to itself, inside the fixed frame , due to wear of the outer casing of the roller. In this case, the roller support ball may no longer be centered relative to the wear part placed on the frame. According to a preferred arrangement, the device comprises means for adjusting the position of the wearing part on the frame, as a function of the position of the axis of rotation. This adjustment means can advantageously consist of a part for holding the wearing part, slidingly mounted in the direction of movement of the axis of rotation, in a groove formed on the frame, and capable of being fixed in position adjustable along the groove, by means of a removable fixing member.

However, the invention will be better understood from the detailed description of an embodiment given by way of example and shown in the accompanying drawings.

  • - la Fig. 1 est une vue en coupe axiale d'une butée d'appui de rouleau, selon l'invention;- Fig. 1 is an axial sectional view of a roller bearing stop, according to the invention;

The roller 1 can for example be a flatness roller over which passes at high speed, a metal strip 11. It is held radially in a conventional manner, by means not shown, for example support rollers distributed regularly around its axis or else a support roller placed on the side opposite to the sheet 11.

At each of its ends, the roller 1 is provided with a contact ball 3 which, depending on the axial stresses applied to the roller, can come to bear on a wearing part 4, mounted on the frame 2.

The contact ball 3 is crimped at the end of a support piece 5 consisting of an end piece 51, extended on the side of the roller, by an enlarged base 52. The end piece 51 and the base 52 are limited by the faces lateral cylindrical centers on the same axis 50 which is aligned with the axis 10 of rotation of the roller. The base 52 has a diameter greater than that of the end piece 51, so as to provide, between their lateral faces, a shoulder 53.

The enlarged base 52 fits inside a housing bounded laterally by a cylindrical wall 61 and, on the side of the roller, by a bottom 62 transverse to the axis. Preferably, the housing 6 is formed in a part 63 forming the body of the axial stop and fixed by a screw 64 at the end of the roller, so that the axis 60 of the bowl 6 coincides with the axis 10 of the roller.

The base 52 of the support piece 5 is held in the housing 6, on the one hand, radially by a centering bearing 65 interposed between the internal face 61 of the bowl 6 and the lateral face of the base 52, and on the other hand, axially, by an axial stop 66 interposed between the end face 54 of the base 52 and the bottom 62 of the bowl 6. In this position, the shoulder 53 is substantially in the plane of the end of the cylindrical side wall 61 of the housing.

The assembly is held by a housing closure cap 7 comprising a socket 71 provided with an internal thread which is screwed onto a corresponding thread 67 formed on the side wall (61) of the housing (6). The cap 7 is closed by a flat bottom 73, pierced with an orifice for the passage of the end piece 50 and which is supported on the shoulder 53, so as to hold the base 52 in place inside the housing . Advantageously, the orifice for passage of the end piece 51 is constituted by a bore formed in the axis of a cylindrical sleeve 74 which extends the cap 7, substantially up to the end of the end piece, this- ci being threaded in the axial bore without however being tightened, so that the sleeve 74 constitutes a smooth bearing cooperating with the bearing 65 to keep the axis 50 of the ball aligned with the axis 10 of the roller, without prohibiting a rotation of the nozzle 51 relative to the sleeve 74.

Furthermore, the wear plate 4 is mounted in a support piece 41 which comprises a U-shaped extension 42 which is placed below the sleeve 74. The extension 42 thus serves to support the roller 1 in the event of stop, for example, during disassembly.

For this purpose, the support piece 41 is provided with a tail 43 which is threaded through an oblong hole or a groove 21 formed in the frame 2 and allowing the tail 43 to slide, in a direction parallel to the direction of support of the roller 1 on its support. The support piece 41 is fixed to the frame 2 by a shoulder 45 and a washer 46 tightened by a bolt 47. In this way, in the event of wear of the roller 1 determining a slight displacement of its axis 10, it is possible to move the support piece 41, and consequently, the wear plate 4 so that the contact ball 3 remains perfectly centered on the wear plate 4.

When the roller 1 is driven at high speed, the support piece 5 and the ball 3 also rotate around the axis 10. However, if it is pressed on the wear plate 4, the rotation of the support piece 5 and the ball 3 can be stopped in a very short time due to the low inertia of the support piece, centered by the bearing 65 and bearing on the axial stop 66.

To reduce the inertia of the rotating parts as much as possible, it is advantageous to use a needle bearing for centering the support part 5.

The low inertia of all the rotating parts and the low contact between the ball 3 of small diameter and the wear plate 4 make it possible to reduce the heat energy produced by friction when the ball 3 comes to bear on the wear plate 4.

Cette diminution de production de chaleur permet d'avoir des vitesses supérieures à 12000 t/mn pour des cylindres de diamètre de l'ordre de 20 mm.This reduction in heat production makes it possible to have speeds greater than 12,000 rpm for cylinders with a diameter of the order of 20 mm.
