Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a printer for the simultaneous printing of an entire line comprising a print medium on which a sheet or strip of paper or other material to be printed is applied during printing, a print head. printing on which a multitude of printing members are arranged essentially along a line, an ink ribbon of a width corresponding substantially to the width of the printing head and a transport mechanism intended to move the paper in a perpendicular direction to said line, the ribbon being, in the printing position, inserted between the paper and the printing members and moved in said direction perpendicular to the line.
  • Such printers are generally known using a thermal printing head as described in European patent application No. 86.661.
  • printers For polychromic printing line by line, known printers generally have several printheads arranged one after the other and each having an ink ribbon of a different color. Such printers are described, inter alia, in US Patent 4,447,818 or in German application DE-OS 33.05.491, and include a transport mechanism for moving paper from one printing station to the next. Polychromic printers of this type are of a high cost price considering the cost of linear thermal print heads. In addition, the exact superimposition of the printing of the different colors is difficult to achieve and requires particularly severe construction requirements with regard to the paper transport mechanism.
  • Polychromic line by line printers which have only one print head and an ink ribbon having portions of different colors arranged one after the other. These printers, known as the "harlequin" type, are constructively simpler to produce, however causing a great loss of ink ribbon, hence a high cost of use.
  • the object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks by creating an accurate and reliable printer, while reducing consumption of ink ribbons to a minimum.
  • the printer according to the invention is characterized, for this purpose, in that it comprises at least one other ink ribbon and a changer device intended to exchange and place one or the other of the ink ribbons at said printing position.
  • the printer illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2 comprises a printing medium in the form of a cylinder 2 made of aluminum profile covered with an elastomer coating 3.
  • the printer is fed with sheets of paper to be printed along 'an inclined plane 4 and these are stored in a tray 5 after printing.
  • the cylinder 2 is rotatably mounted by a shaft 6 in the frame 7 and includes a paper clamp mechanism 8.
  • the latter comprises an elastic metal blade 9 in the form of a comb fixed by one of its sides over its entire length to the profile of the cylinder 2
  • the teeth of the comb are provided on the one hand with supporting parts 10 which are urged elastically against the cylinder 2 and making it possible to maintain the sheet on the latter and, on the other hand, with abutment parts 11 intended to stop a sheet in a precise position when it is inserted into the printer.
  • the opening and closing movement of the elastic blade 9 is controlled by a cam 12, the pivot shaft 18 of which is integral with the cylinder 2.
  • This cam 12 carries a control finger 13 having a stud 14 capable of cooperating with a stop 15 pivotally mounted around a shaft 16 secured to the frame 7.
  • a rod 17 determines a rest position for the stop 15.
  • the printer further comprises a control bar 20 retractably mounted on the frame 7 and intended to control the opening of the paper-clamp mechanism 8 when a sheet is printed by cooperating with the finger 13, as illustrated in broken lines in FIG. 1.
  • the mechanism 8 is provided with a second elastic blade 21 in the form of a comb, the teeth of which occupy the interstices between the abutment pieces 11. Fixed on one side with the blade 9 to the cylinder 2, this blade 21 is applied by its other side in the sheet insertion position against the cylinder 2, as illustrated in FIG. 1.
  • the printer further comprises a guide screen 22 having grooves for the passage of the raised teeth of the metal blade 9. This screen guides the separate sheet to the tray 5.
  • a backpressure roller 23 allows the transport of the sheet to this tray 5, when released by the paper clip mechanism 8.
  • the print head 30 of the printer is provided with a number of heating elements 33 arranged in line.
  • Each element 33 is connected to a control unit, not illustrated, controlling the passage of an electric current in some of the elements at a given time, which heats them and causes the thermal transfer of ink from an ink ribbon 31 onto the paper to be printed.
  • This printhead 30 is mounted on pivoting arms 32 controlled by a motor not shown and intended to apply the heating elements 33 with a determined pressure against the ink ribbon 31 and to retract the printhead as illustrated in lines interrupted 34.
  • the printer is provided with a changing device 40 intended to exchange and to place one or the other of the ink ribbons 31 in the printing position.
  • This device comprises a conveyor mechanism constituted by two notched belts 41 connected by four rods 42 to ensure their parallel movement. These belts 41 are each mounted on four rollers 43 with notched periphery having common shafts 44 mounted in bearings 52 provided on the frame 7. One of the shafts 44 is driven by a stepping motor 45.
  • Four organs of attachment 46 for cassettes 55 are mounted on the two belts 41 which constitute a substantially rectangular changer circuit.
  • These fixing members 46 comprise two lateral plates 47 (fig. 2) connected by two spacers 48. Each of the plates 47 is held at one of the belts 41 by two pins 49, 50 integral with the latter. One 49 of the pins crosses the plate 47 through a hole and serves as a pivot shaft, while the other pin 50 is capable of sliding in a slot 51 of the plate 47 so as to allow the passage of the angles of the circuit rectangular.
  • the printer is intended for polychromic printing - in four colors and includes, for this purpose, four ink ribbons 31 for printing in black, yellow, cyane and magenta. These ribbons are contained in four cassettes 55, a copy of which is shown in FIG. 3. In these cassettes, the ink ribbon 31 is unwound from a supply reel 56, passes in front of a window 57 and is wound on a take-up reel 58. This the latter is integral with a wheel 59 capable of cooperating in the friction printing position with a drive wheel 60, itself driven by the cylinder 2 thanks to a belt 61.
  • Each of the cassettes 55 made of synthetic material, has retaining flanges 62 intended to engage frictionally on the two spacers 48 allowing it to be mounted on the fixing members 46.
  • the printer works as follows. In the non-use position, the print head 30 is in the position 34 illustrated in broken lines in FIG. 1 and the paper-clip mechanism 8 is open. Following a paper feed command, a sheet is supplied along the inclined plane 4 and stopped by the stop pieces 11 in a precise position. The cylinder - 2 is then turned 9 ° backwards in the opposite direction clockwise. The stud 14 being in contact with the pivoting stop 15, the cam 12 is turned around its shaft 18 until its flat face 19 is opposite the elastic blade 19 which then clamps the sheet between the pieces of support 10 and cylinder 2. The latter can then be rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow, until the sheet is in the printing position.
  • the stepping motor 45 is started to transport the cassette 55 containing the appropriate ribbon to the printing position.
  • the print head 30 is then pivoted to penetrate into the center of the cassette 55, where it is put in place so that its heating elements 33 press the ink ribbon 31 through the window 31 with a determined pressure against the disposed paper on cylinder 2.
  • Printing can then take place line by line by simultaneous heating of some of the elements for a line at a given time.
  • the head 30 is removed by a few millimeters from the cylinder 2 so that the ink ribbon 31 is no longer applied against the paper.
  • the cylinder 2 can then rotate freely without the ink ribbon 31 being advanced.
  • the friction force of the drive between the wheel 60 and the wheel 59 is chosen so that the ink ribbon 31 is only advanced when the print head 30 applies the ribbon 31 against the cylinder 2 and when the latter is rotated in the direction of the arrow. This friction force is however too low to advance the ribbon 31, when the latter is not applied against the paper and assisted in its movement by the rotation of the cylinder 2.
  • control bar 20 is retracted so as not to control the opening of the paper-clip mechanism 8 if a new color is to be applied.
  • the stud 14 raises the pivoting stop 15 in the passage without the position of the cam 12 being changed.
  • the head 30 is retracted and the motor 45 of the ribbon changer device 40 is started to place, if necessary, another ink ribbon in the printing position and so on.
  • the control bar 20 While the last desired color is being printed, the control bar 20 is advanced so as to cooperate with the finger 13. Passing near this bar 20, the cam 12 is pivoted and first raises the blade 9 to release the sheet and then the exploding blade 21.
  • the shape of the cam 12 is given so that it comes back to be immobilized in the second rest position determined by the flat face 24 facing the elastic blade 9 In this rest position, the paper clamp mechanism 8 is open, but the expulsion blade 21 is pressed against the cylinder, as shown in FIG. 1.
  • the teeth of the raised blade 9 then pass through the grooves of the guide screen 22. Arrived at the angular position illustrated in FIG. 1, a new sheet can be introduced since the paper-clip mechanism 8 is open.
  • the second embodiment illustrated in FIG. 4 has a print medium identical to the first embodiment, but is distinguished from the latter by the tape changer device 70.
  • This device consists of a drum 71 comprising two lateral flanges 72 connected by four rods or spacers 73.
  • Four cassettes 74 containing the ink ribbons 31 are provided with projecting portions 75 engaging with greasy friction on the rods 73.
  • the two flanges 72 are each carried by three rollers 76, the shafts 77 of which are mounted in the frame of the printer.
  • a toothed belt 78 allows the rotation of the drum controlled by a stepping motor 79.
  • the central part of the two flanges 72 has a circular opening 80 intended for the passage of a control arm 81 ensuring the establishment and removing the print head 30.
  • the cassettes 74 also include a front window 82 through which the ink ribbon 31 can be applied against the paper.
  • the printing medium could be constituted by a flat carriage carrying out a linear movement back and forth. Changing devices could be provided for a different number of ink ribbon cassettes.
  • the print head could be of a completely different type of operation, for example a print head with needles arranged essentially along a line.
