Description

The invention relates to a heat exchanger, in particular a radiator of a motor vehicle engine cooling circuit, which comprises a bundle of finned tubes and at least one water box mounted at one end of the bundle, the latter being formed of at least two sets, independent and juxtaposed, of finned tubes.

It is known that the radiator of a cooling circuit of a truck engine or the like has a larger size than that of a radiator of a passenger vehicle and, for this reason, it has already been proposed to form the bundle of tubes of such a radiator by at least two sets of finned tubes independent of one another which are juxtaposed and which are mounted in parallel between the water boxes of the exchanger.

Each of these sets of finned tubes, corresponding to a fraction of the radiator tube bundle, is simpler and easier to manufacture and handle than a single bundle corresponding to the juxtaposition of these tube assemblies. In particular, the fins with which the tubes of these assemblies are provided have an area twice (or several times) smaller than that of the fins with which the tubes would be provided with a bundle made in one piece. As these fins are generally made of aluminum and have an extremely small thickness, of the order of 0.1 mm, the reduction in their dimensions greatly facilitates the manufacture and assembly of the radiator beam, and also improves its mechanical strength.

However, an exchanger whose bundle is formed from at least two independent sets of finned tubes, which are juxtaposed as close as possible, is subjected to significant vibrations in use, which can cause impacts of the fins of these sets. on each other by their facing edges, leading to crushing and deformation of these edges.

Furthermore, US Pat. No. 2,184,657 describes a heat exchanger comprising several sets of finned tubes, in which each set forms an independent radiator. The two water boxes of each radiator are connected to each other by crosspieces and the crosspieces of the juxtaposed radiators are fixed to each other by bolts.

Such a heat exchanger also requires connecting conduits between the water boxes of the radiators and is therefore complex and expensive to produce.

The object of the invention is in particular to avoid the drawbacks of known exchangers, in a simple, inexpensive and particularly effective manner.

To this end, it provides a heat exchanger, in particular a radiator for a motor vehicle engine cooling circuit, comprising a bundle of finned tubes and at least one water box mounted at one end of the bundle, the latter being formed from at least two sets, independent and juxtaposed, of finned tubes, characterized by first means urging the sets of finned tubes towards each other, in a plane perpendicular to the tubes of said sets, these first means comprising two parallel sleepers extending along two small faces of the bundle parallel to the tubes and connecting members connecting the sleepers together; and second means provided in each set of tubes to be supported one on the other, in a plane perpendicular to the tubes by the first means, the second means of each set of tubes comprising a rigid plate having substantially the shape of a fin and slightly larger dimensions, which is interposed between two fins in said assembly, and which is crossed by the tubes of this assembly.

According to another characteristic of the invention, the connecting members comprise two tie rods which connect the crosspieces to each other in their middle zone, and these crosspieces are connected to each other at their ends, for example by the manifold-waterbox assemblies of the 'exchanger.

The assembly of each set of finned tubes is facilitated by the fact that the plate provided in this set has substantially the same shape as the fins and of dimensions slightly greater than those of the fins. The conventional means of assembling the bundles of tubes can therefore be used, without modification.

When the heat exchanger according to the invention is assembled, the aforementioned plates of said sets of tubes are juxtaposed in the same plane, perpendicular to the tubes, and are clamped one on the other and between the crosspieces by the aforementioned tie rods.

The plates advantageously having dimensions slightly larger than those of the fins in the areas where they must come into contact, the edges of the fins are thus kept at a small distance from each other.

Thanks to this combination of means, the sets of finned tubes constituting the exchanger bundle can be maintained with respect to the vibrations to which the exchanger is subjected in use, without the edges of the fins of the juxtaposed sets of tubes being able to warp and crash against each other.

A rigid and relatively undeformable assembly is thus obtained by virtue of the prestressing exerted on the plates juxtaposed by the aforementioned crosspieces and tie rods.

Avantageusement, les plaques précitées sont en une matière amortissant les vibrations, par exemple en matière plastique et ont une épaisseur plusieurs fois supérieure à celle des ailettes, par exemple de l'ordre de 10 mm lorsque les ailettes sont réalisées en aluminium et ont une épaisseur de l'ordre de 0,1 mm.Advantageously, the aforementioned plates are in a vibration-absorbing material, for example plastic and have a thickness several times greater than that of the fins, for example of the order of 10 mm when the fins are made of aluminum and have a thickness of about 0 , 1 mm.

To reduce their weight and increase their elasticity, these plates may include cavities or lightening grooves.

In the description which follows, given by way of example, reference is made to the appended drawings, in which:
  • - Figure 1 is an elevational view of a heat exchanger according to the invention.
  • - Figure 2 is a sectional view, on a larger scale, along the line II-II of Figure 1.
  • - Figure 3 is a sectional view along line III-III of Figure 2.

The heat exchanger shown in Figure 1 is in particular intended to be mounted in the cooling circuit of a motor vehicle engine such as a truck.

It comprises a bundle 10 of finned tubes, straight and parallel, at the ends of which are mounted two water boxes (12 and 14) respectively, one of which comprises the tube (16) for entering the liquid in the exchanger and the other of which comprises the outlet pipe (18), these two water boxes being conventionally mounted on the ends of the bundle (10), for example by means of collectors or tube plates which are passed through in a leaktight manner by the ends of the bundle tubes.

The bundle (10) of the exchanger is, due to its large size, formed by at least two sets (20 and 22) of finned tubes, which are juxtaposed vertically, the assembly (20) forming for example the upper half of the bundle (10) while the assembly (22) forms its lower half.

In the embodiment shown (FIGS. 2 and 3), each set (20, 22) of fin tubes is itself made up of two sub-assemblies (24, 26 and 28, 30) of fin tubes, which are independent of each other and which are juxtaposed in each set (20 or 22) in a horizontal direction perpendicular to the direction of juxtaposition of the two sets (20 and 22) and corresponding to the thickness of the beam (10). The two sub-assemblies (24 and 26) of finned tubes forming the assembly (20) are juxtaposed horizontally in the direction of the thickness of the beam, as well as the two sub-assemblies (28 and 30) forming the assembly (22) of finned tubes. On the other hand, the two sub-assemblies (26 and 30) of finned tubes are juxtaposed vertically, and the sub-assemblies (24 and 28) are also juxtaposed vertically, in the direction of the juxtaposition of the assemblies (20 and 22 ).

Each sub-assembly (24, 26, 28, 30) of finned tubes is formed of rectilinear and parallel tubes arranged in rows and columns, which are provided with fins (34) which are plane and parallel to each other, perpendicular to the tubes (32 ). Each sub-assembly (24, 26, 28, 30) of finned tubes comprises, substantially in its central region, a rigid plate (36) having substantially the same planar and rectangular shape as the fins (34) of each sub-assembly , but slightly larger in length and width, this plate (36) being interposed between two fins (34) and having a thickness several times greater than that of the fins.

Like the fins (34), the plate (30) is traversed by the tubes (32) of the corresponding sub-assembly and is fixed to at least some of these tubes, in the same way as the fins are fixed to the tubes, for example by crimping by means of swelling or radial expansion of the tubes after their introduction into the holes of the fins and of the plate (36).

When the four sub-assemblies (24, 26, 28, 30) of finned tubes are juxtaposed to constitute the bundle (10) of the exchanger, the four plates (36) are also juxtaposed and come into abutment two by two the on top of each other.

On the two small faces of the bundle (10) which are not associated with the water boxes (12 and 14), extend two metal crosspieces (38) of U-section, which are relatively rigid and the ends of which are fixed by any suitable means on the water boxes (12 and 14) or on the collectors associated with these water boxes.

Les extrémités filetées des tirants (40) traversent des trous ce pattes (42) en 1 fixées extérieurement sur les rebords des traverses (38), et reçoivent des écrous de serrage (44).The crosspieces (38) are also connected to each other, in their central region, by two parallel tie rods (40) each extending across a large face of the bundle (10), on either side of the latter. . The threaded ends of the tie rods (40) pass through holes in this lugs (42) in 1 fixed externally on the edges of the crosspieces (38), and receive tightening nuts (44).

The tightening of these nuts on the threaded ends of the tie rods (40) allows the plates (36) to be tightened two by two to one another between the crosspieces (38). Due to the support of the plates (36) on each other and on the crosspieces (38) which are connected to each other with prestress in their median zone by the tie rods (40) and which are also rigidly fixed at their ends to the water boxes (16 and 14) or associated collectors, the entire bundle (10) thus obtained is relatively rigid and non-deformable, and practically insensitive to vibrations. Furthermore, as the plates (36) have dimensions in length and width slightly greater than those of the fins (34), the fins of the juxtaposed subassemblies (24, 26, 28, 30) cannot come into contact with one another. with the others by their opposite edges and therefore cannot deform or crush.

In the embodiment shown, the sub-assemblies (24, 26, 28, 30) of finned tubes are identical to each other. This identity is not compulsory and the invention also applies to the case where the finned tube sub-assemblies or the sets of finned tubes forming the exchanger bundle are not identical. Similarly, the number of assemblies or sub-assemblies of this finned tube forming the bundle (10) is not limited to two.
