Definitions
- the score line in the region of the tear-open part, in which the core wall 3 has its arcuate course in the end section of the tear-open part 26, the score line most suitably has a polygonal course, as is illustrated in FIG. 2. This does not rule out that the transitions at the polygonal corners are each formed by sections with a very small radius of curvature.

Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a lid made of sheet metal for non-round cans, in particular long oval cans in z. B. Hansa format, with a tear-open part which occupies the predominant area of the lid mirror delimited by the lid core wall, which is surrounded by a mostly tight and parallel to the lid edge, self-contained score line with a starting section in the area of one lid end and at the near the starting section a lever-shaped grip tab is fastened lying flat, the handle end of which points in the longitudinal direction of the cover, in which the tear-open part is stiffened by a plurality of beads or the like oriented in a predetermined manner in relation to the longitudinal and / or transverse direction of the cover.
A lid of this type is e.g. B. from GB-PS-1 207 769 known. It is essential for non-circular cans, to which the invention relates that the core wall in the area diametrically opposite the attachment point of the grip tab runs in an arc, usually in an arc, as is apparent from GB-PS-1 207 769.
In the case of lids of the type in question, one can generally distinguish between two important different phases when opening the lid. The first phase concerns the initial breaking in of the score line by lifting the end of the handle and the subsequent initial tearing of the sheet along both sides of the score line until the tearing process reaches the long sides of the lid. For this initial phase of the tearing process, certain design features have been developed for the front lid area in which the grip tab is attached.
A second important phase is the last phase of separating the tear-open part from the lid. This phase comprises the separation process from the transition from the long sides into the arcuate end section of the core wall until the tear-off part is finally separated from the cover. The invention is concerned with this last phase of separating the tear-open part from the lid.
During the tearing process, a considerable force is exerted on the sheet metal of the tear-open part via the grip tab attached to one end of the tear-open part, namely in the longitudinal direction of the cover and inclined obliquely upwards with respect to the plane of the cover. During the tear-open process, the sheet of the tear-open part is bent back more and more, causing considerable stresses in the sheet. If at the end of the tear-open process the tear-open part suddenly or more suddenly detaches from the cover, the forces stored in the cover plate are suddenly released, the tear-open part springing out. This can lead to injuries and often has the consequence that the spring-like tearing part dips into the contents of the can and splashes it.
In the subject of GB-PS-1 207 769, attempts have been made to counteract these disadvantageous circumstances by ensuring that the sheet metal bends more easily in the first phase of the tear-open process by transverse beads in the start section of the tear-open process, while the rear region of the tear-open part by In the longitudinal direction of the cover, parallel or inclined ribs have been stiffened like a board, so that in the last phase of the tearing process at the end of the tearing part, the bending processes in the sheet remain limited. This is intended to ensure that the forces stored in the sheet and thus also the elasticity of the tear-open part remain within limits during the severing process.
Such lids are now made from very thin sheets. This means that the tear-open part of the lid is relatively unstable and thus bends more easily despite stiffeners and has a higher storage capacity for spring forces, so that the measures known from GB-PS are often not sufficient to ensure that a consumer with such a lid provided can can open without the risk of injury or without splashing the contents.
This applies in particular to cans of the Hansa format, in which the end regions of the can and the core wall are bent in a semicircular shape, so that the can has an essentially oval outline and in which the score line, with the exception of the starting section to which the handle tab is attached , along its entire length in close proximity and parallel to the core wall.
With these lids it can happen that the tensile force when opening is not applied parallel to the tearing or longitudinal direction of the lid. The tearing process can therefore go wrong, ie the two tear points running along both sides of the lid can move non-uniformly on the long sides of the lid. In the end area, this can lead to difficulties in the final separation process. But even if the tear-open force is always applied parallel to the longitudinal direction of the lid, it cannot be avoided that in the final phase of the opening process an ever increasing force must be applied to the tear-open part via the grip tab in order to start the tear-open process in this phase to keep. This is due to the arcuate course of the score line in the end area of the cover. During this phase, too, the tear force is always applied in the longitudinal direction of the cover, the direction which the tear point must advance along the score line is constantly changing. At the end point of the ripping process, this direction runs practically transversely to the longitudinal direction and thus transversely to the direction in which the ripping force is via the grip tab is applied. This means that the force component effective for the tearing process becomes smaller and smaller in the final phase of the separation process. In order to keep the tearing process going, an ever increasing force must therefore be applied via the grip tab. This force, which acts on the sheet metal of the tear-open part, is greatest at the moment when the tear-off part is finally released from the cover. With the increase in force and deformation, the size of the resilience of the tear-open part also increases, with the disadvantageous consequences at the moment of separation, which have already been explained in more detail above.
It is therefore an object of the invention to develop a lid with the features of the preamble of claim 1 so that a safe final separation of the tear-open part from the cover without the risk of splashing or injury to the tear edge of the tear-off part in the without special attention of the user last phase of the tearing process is possible, so that the handling of the can when opening is much easier.
This object is achieved by the teaching of claim 1.
Numerous other cover shapes are known, but the problems described here do not exist or are not present to this extent. For example, US Pat. No. 3,441,171 shows a cover whose long sides are slightly curved, while the end faces are straight and transverse to the longitudinal direction of the cover. Here, too, the score line runs along its entire length in close proximity and parallel to the core wall, i.e. Slightly arched on the long sides and rectilinear on the front sides and transverse to the longitudinal direction. It can be seen that the problems described above occur only partially with such a cover. Thus, even with such a lid, there is a risk that the tear-off points on the long sides advance non-uniformly, so that a tear-off point is more likely to reach the straight notch line section at the end of the lid and thus the final separation process in the vicinity of a rounded transition point between the long side and the end face of the lid. Here, too, considerable springback forces can be stored in the tear-open part, so that here too there is a risk of injury or splashing of the contents of the can.
The subject of DE-OS-1 959 353 is a similar cover shape to that of the previously discussed US Pat. No. 3,441,171, with the difference that the long sides run in a straight line and that in the area of the straight end at the end of the Cover the score line deviates from the course of the core wall and connects the two straight-line sections of the score line running along the long sides in a circular arc. It can be seen that the same problems occur with this cover, which were initially explained with reference to the generic cover according to GB-PS-1 207 769.
Es treten hier die gleichen Gefahren auf, wie sie oben anhand der US-PS-3 441 171 erläutert worden sind.DE-OS-2 909 076 shows a can similar to that according to DE-OS-1 959 353 with the difference that here the score line, with the exception of the area of the start section, always runs in closer proximity and parallel to the core wall of the lid, whereby this course on the side walls and in the end region is straight and the straight notch line sections in the end region are continuously connected to one another by arcuate transition regions. The same dangers arise here as have been explained above with reference to US Pat. No. 3,441,171.
It can thus be stated that the known cover according to the last-mentioned documents does not offer a solution to the problem on which the invention is based, even for such cans in which the core wall at the ends of the cans has a straight line which is rectangular to the longitudinal direction of the can.
In contrast, the problems described at the outset can be overcome in a simple and complete manner with the teaching of claim 1.
It is essential for this that the notch line in the end region of the cover differs significantly from the course of the core wall in this region. While in the known covers the straight-running notch line sections merge continuously and tangentially into one another over arc-shaped areas, the notch line in the end area of the cover is designed in accordance with the teaching of claim 1 in such a way that the notch line section with a straight tendon-shaped course with the adjacent notch line sections each through a discontinuity or kink connected is.
For the tear-open operation in its last phase, this means that the tear-open points initially proceed under the same conditions as in the known lids, on the long sides of the lid and migrate into the arcuate region at the end of the lid, initially, as is known, for Maintaining the ripping process necessary force must be greater. However, due to the teaching of claim 1, this process is interrupted at a considerable distance from the longitudinal center line of the cover, i.e. in places where the force component still effective for the tear-open process still forms a clearly acute angle with the longitudinal center line of the cover, i.e. that when the end point of the score line section of a straight, tendon-shaped course is reached, the tear-open force required to maintain the tear-open process remains relatively low.
The kinks in the score line at the transition regions to the tendon-shaped score line section mean a considerable tear resistance for the tear-open process, which precludes continuous tearing of the tear points into the tendon-shaped score line section. Rather, the two tearing processes come to a standstill when the end points of the chord-shaped notch line section are reached, without this being subject to the arbitrariness of the user. However, this immediately feels resistance to tearing.
If the opening process went wrong beforehand, this has no influence. The leading tear-open point only comes to a standstill sooner than the other at the end point of the tendon-shaped notch line section, so that the other tear-open point can follow up to the end of this tendon-shaped notch line section. If the tear-open process goes wrong, it is automatically corrected before the tear-open part can be finally separated from the lid. The user, however large the tearing force, cannot finally tear off the tear-open part by tearing along the score line. Rather, the user is automatically forced to release the force on the grip tab. During further testing, the tear-open part is automatically pivoted back and forth around the chord-shaped notch line section like a hinge line, the sheet metal breaking off along this hinge line without any effort and without any significant effort. This break-off process takes place without any significant effort. It is only possible if the tear force previously applied has been greatly reduced. This means that at the moment of the final detachment of the tear-open part, a significant springback force is not stored in it. Rather, the tear-open part separates from the can easily and without resilience and without any significant effort. In this way, all of the problems explained at the beginning are overcome in a simple and reliable manner in the last phase of the tearing process. The design of the lid according to the teaching of claim 1 leads solely to the configuration of the lid that in the last phase of the separation process a different opening principle than the usual one is forced on the user.
The effect of this new opening principle is significantly improved if the transitions between the side notch line sections to the chord-shaped notch line section are not curved parallel to the core wall and curved, as provided for in
The new opening principle in the final phase of the separation process can still be supported if the teaching of

The end points 17 of the chord-shaped
Practice has shown that in the region of the tear-open part, in which the

In one exemplary embodiment, the chord-shaped
