Abstract

The components of a mechanical watch are mounted inside a supporting structure comprising a stack of transparent plates made of corundum, spinel or quartz. Some of the plates are formed with cut-outs which define in the assembled structure housings for accommodating said components.

Description

The present invention relates to a portable device of the type comprising a support frame, a power source, a rotary drive member powered by this source, a gear train driven by said drive member, a transparent front plate and a rear plate.

Among the known devices corresponding to this definition, there are, for example, wristwatches and pocket watches. The aesthetic character of these parts is generally defined by the case, the dial and the hands. Some more original pieces, known as skeleton watches, have a plate and openwork bridges that allow a partial view of their moving parts.

US Patent 4459032 describes a watch comprising a metal box and two transparent plates forming the glass and the back of the watch. The time is displayed by means of discs fitted with indexes and pivoting on a shaft secured to the lower plate. All the other elements of the watch are housed in the box itself, at the periphery of the watch.

A watch comprising two glass plates joined to one another is described in US Pat. No. 4,362,397. The outer plate forms the glass of the watch, as well as one of the plates of a display cell. The bottom plate forms the other plate of this cell and a support frame for the other elements of the watch. A layer of metal, carried by one of the plates in the areas occupied by these other elements, masks them from the wearer.

The object of the present invention is to provide a device of the above kind which, unlike known devices, not only offers a very broad view of its constituent elements, but also has interesting aesthetic effects.

This object is achieved thanks to the particular characteristics presented by the device of claim 1 or the mechanical watch according to claim 4.

The plate 12 has a circular opening 66 and the plate 14 a circular opening 68, of smaller diameter, inside which are respectively the minute hand 36 and the hour hand 38.

The barrel 32, which contains the spring 30, occupies a housing formed by circular openings 70, 72, 74 and 76 respectively formed in the plates 16, 18, 20 and 22. The ends of the barrel shaft pivot in holes 78 and 80 of plates 14 and 24 respectively.

The train 34 and the exhaust 40 occupy a housing formed by openings of appropriate shapes 82, 84 and 86, made in the plates 18, 20 and 22 respectively. They pivot in holes (not referenced) which are drilled in the plates 16, 18 and 24.

The pendulum 42 is located in a housing defined by circular openings 88, 90, 92 and 94 which comprise the plates 16, 18, 20 and 22 respectively. It pivots in holes (not referenced), made in plates 14 and 24.

The parts 46 to 64 constituting the winding and time-setting mechanism take place in a housing defined by openings 96 and 98 made in the plates 24 and 26. The pull tab 46 and the rocker 52 pivot in holes (not referenced) drilled in the plate 22, while the crown 58 and the pawl 62 pivot in holes (not referenced) in the plate 24.

The plates 10 to 28 are assembled by means of four screws 104 and four screw feet 106, respectively engaged in holes 108, made in each of the plates, with the exception of plate 22.

The latter, shorter than the others, has four holes 110 which make it possible to position it on the plate 24 by means of four feet 112 integral with the latter and engaging in the holes 110. Thanks to this arrangement, it is possible insert between the plates 20 and 24, at the ends of the plate 22, two strap fasteners 114 and 116 which have holes 118 for the passage of the foot-screws 106.

The plate 22 is here thicker than the others in order to allow the use of a time-setting rod and strap fasteners sufficiently rigid to withstand the normal stresses to which a watch may be subjected.

The openings can be cut from the plates by any suitable means. In the case of corundum and spinel, the cutting is advantageously carried out by laser beam or by ultrasound. As for quartz, it lends itself more easily to cutting by a photochemical process.

It goes without saying that the invention is not limited to the single embodiment which has just been described. In particular, the number of plates used can be increased or reduced. As for the shape of the openings made in the plates, it can either correspond fairly exactly, as shown in FIG. 1, to the shape of the constituent parts of the movement, or on the contrary to move away from it so as to produce, by itself, particular aesthetic effects.

Thus, the invention offers the possibility, not only, through the use of transparent plates, of making a watch in which all the parts are visible, but also, by playing on the color of the plates and the shape of their openings, create very particular aesthetic effects which give the whole an aspect close to that of a stained glass window.

It is also possible to deposit on the plates, or at least some of them, a very thin colored coating, of the order of a few microns, which contributes to the aesthetics of the watch.

The use of corundum plates makes it possible to produce a particularly remarkable watch. This material has a hardness which gives it a very high resistance to abrasion. In addition, it is possible to produce plates whose thickness can wait for 0.2 to 0.3 mm, which makes it possible to multiply the number of plates and therefore increases the possibilities of creating aesthetic effects.

It should finally be noted that, on the one hand, the use of hard materials, especially such as corundum and spinel, but also quartz and, on the other hand, the possibility offered to limit to the strict minimum the openings which weaken the structure of the skeleton watches makes it possible to produce a thin watch, of particularly original appearance, having excellent rigidity and leaving visible its moving parts.

The aesthetic result is such that it is self-sufficient and that consequently, the time display function can be omitted to leave only a set of mobiles integrated in a sort of stained glass.
