Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a rig for a sail board, with an unstuck mast that can be freely rotated and swiveled on all sides, with a boom attached to the mast and with a sail held open between the mast and boom.
As is well known, with a rig of this type, the aerodynamically most favorable course of the sail profile changes with increasing dynamic pressure on the sail, since the mast and boom are subject to bending stress. The mast itself forms an interference point for the suction side flow at the front edge of the sail, the boundary layer of which changes from the laminar to the turbulent state at an early stage and thus tends to detach. The detachment process takes place on the suction side of the sail at about half the profile length, namely when there is a noticeable delay in the higher suction side speed. The force effect is consequently reduced since the deflection is no longer complete.
At large angles of attack, the flow can also be interrupted directly on the mast, the suction side flow then no longer has any share in the resulting buoyancy.
In order to avoid the flow separation, the angle of attack of the sail against the wind direction should be kept small, which, however, leads to a low lift coefficient and thus to a low propulsive force of the sail. When the angle is increased, however, the force effect is reduced again by the stall occurring.
In order to improve the aerodynamic properties of the sail, jib sails have been placed in front of the mast. However, with the same sail area, the ratio of the span to the profile length - measured in the direction of flow - is smaller and therefore less favorable. The edge vortex formation, d. H. the induced drag increases and the lift gradient decreases, causing part of the gain to be lost.
In addition, handling of the rig is made considerably more difficult as a result of a significantly enlarged sail area, especially when performing turning maneuvers and when catching up with the sail.
The invention has for its object to provide a rig of the type mentioned, which has better aerodynamic properties with a structurally simple construction and inexpensive manufacture, but does not affect handling. Another object is to improve the rig of the type mentioned at the outset in such a way that a reduced force requirement when catching up with the sail is required.
To solve the problem it is proposed that the sail surface above the boom is opened by a slot running from top to bottom and the aft part of the front surface is bulged in relation to the luff of the rear surface and is self-turning to the luff of the rear surface. Advantageous embodiments of the sail according to the invention are characterized in the subclaims.
With the rig according to the invention, the flow properties can be significantly improved. Before the deceleration phase of the initially strongly accelerated flow begins on the negative pressure side of the sail and there is a risk of boundary layer detachment, the flow can attach itself to the still energetic flow between the front surface and the rear surface and then continues with it from the rear surface redirected. The profile length of the rear surface is again only small, so that there is no detachment here either. In addition, the rear surface has a taut luff without a thickening which interferes with the flow, as represented, for example, by the mast. Preventing the flow separation allows a larger angle of attack and thus a larger maximum lift coefficient.
The induced resistance, which arises from the edge vortices when the ends flow from the pressure side to the vacuum side, becomes smaller because the ratio of the span to the profile length of the individual partial areas is larger and therefore better. For this reason, the lift gradient also increases. H. the increase in lift when the angle of attack is increased. The sail propulsion is not only increased by the maximum possible angle of attack, but also by the steeper increase in lift. This is particularly important if the sail is inclined towards windward in strong winds and the current along the sail has a downward component. The ratio of the span to the profile length changes because the span is smaller and the profile length is longer compared to the direction of flow. By dividing the sail, this small, unfavorable ratio is doubled and the marginal vertebrae are thus considerably reduced.
As a result of the arrangement of the partial sail areas within the boom, there is no hindrance in handling. Also dropped a special operation, as with a known jib sail. The leech area of the front sail area swings automatically in the corresponding direction.
Due to the opening in the sail, only a small amount of force is required when catching up with the sail compared to conventional rigs and especially compared to rigs with a jib in front.
Dabei zeigen:
- Fig. 1 ein Rigg in Seitenansicht,
- 1 is a side view of a rig,
- 2 shows a horizontal section through the rig along the line AB in FIG. 1,
- 3 shows a side view of a rig in a modified embodiment,
- Fig. 4 is a diagram of the lift coefficient in the comparison between an open sail and a conventional closed sail.
The embodiment according to FIGS. 1 and 2 illustrates a rig with a
In relation to the luff of the rear sail area separated by the slot from the front sail area, the aft part of the front sail area is bulged and self-turning for the luff of the rear sail area.
In a preferred embodiment, according to FIG. 3, the slot la can be divided several times over its length, which results in several pocket-like bulges in the aft part of the front sail area, which are each self-turning towards the luff of the associated rear sail area. In order to change the overall bulge of the aft part of the front sail area, the subdivision can be designed to be detachable.
As shown in the exemplary embodiments, the slot la runs in a straight line in the sail area, but it can also be guided in an arc from top to bottom. Furthermore, instead of a single slit in the sail, a plurality of slits arranged in the form of a beam can be provided, these slits then preferably being divided into equal partial lengths at right angles to the mast.
In a modified embodiment, not shown, the sail area below the boom can additionally be opened by one or more slots which run approximately upwards and backwards in the area of the mast foot, in the same division as in the upper sail area. The aft part of the respective front sail area is again bulged and self-turning towards the luff of the respective rear sail area.
As will be explained below with reference to FIG. 1, the aerodynamic properties can be opened by opening the sail area in Ver binding with the bulbous design of the front sail area, which is self-turning for luffing the rear sail area, can be significantly improved. No additional constructive measures or aids are required, the sail can be kept in its original cut.
The direction of flow with the mast standing vertically is marked with v, while v 'shows the downward component with the mast inclined towards the windward, b and t are the span and profile length of the overall sail in the vertical position and b' and t 'represent the span in the inclined position recognizes how the slope reduces the ratio b to t to b 'to t'.
By dividing the sail area, the values are approximately doubled (b unchanged, t halved), which results in better aerodynamic properties.
Der höhere Auftriebsbeiwert führt zu einer im gleichen Maße steigenden Segelvortriebskraft.4 shows the increase in the lift coefficient for the sail according to the invention in curve x compared to the single-surface sail curve y, the sail being set at an angle eC against the wind direction. The stall (sudden drop in c A ) shifts to the larger angle α., C A max. becomes larger. At the same time, the lift gradient increases because the aspect ratio of the partial areas increases. The higher lift coefficient leads to an increasing sail propulsive force.
