Abstract

In a tufting needle for tufting machines comprising an operative shank portion of oblong cross-section and containing a thread guide and eye and an anchoring shank portion by which the needle is embedded in a needle module, said anchoring portion is of elliptical or rhombic cross-section and the major axes of the cross-sections of both portions are disposed in substantially the same plane.

Description

The invention relates to a tufting needle for needle modules of tufting machines, the free shaft part of which is flat in cross section and is provided with a thread groove and an eye.

For the manufacture of needle modules of tufting machines, tufting needles of the type mentioned at the outset are used, whose shaft part to be molded into the module body, also called a piston in these needles, has a circular cross section. Tufting needles designed in this way meet the requirements placed on them if they are used for needle modules with a relatively large needle pitch, in which they are arranged at correspondingly large distances in the module body. The tufting needles, which have such a design, however, pose difficulties when needle modules with a narrow needle pitch are to be produced, because the needle pitch is limited by the diameter of the shaft part to be molded and because their molding into the module body also leaves something to be desired if the Distances between their shaft parts to be molded are very small.

To remedy this, a tufting system for the manufacture of needle modules for tufting machines has already been proposed, in which not only the free shaft part but also the shaft part to be molded is flat in cross section (DE-OS 28 28 246). As a result of the likewise flat design of the shaft part to be molded, it is in fact possible to arrange the tufting needles of the type in question with a narrow needle pitch on the needle module. Apart from this, the flat design of the shaft part of the known tufting needle to be molded in provides protection against rotation thereof in the needle module. On the other hand, the flat design of the shaft part of the known tufting needle to be molded is not optimal for its shaping into the module body and its holding in it.

The invention has for its object to provide a tufting needle for needle modules of tufting machines, which has the advantages of the known tufting needle with a flat shaft part to be molded and also results in particularly favorable conditions for their molding into the module body and their hold in this.

For this purpose, the invention provides a tufting needle of the type mentioned at the outset, which is characterized in particular by the fact that the shaft part to be molded into the module body has an elliptical or diamond-shaped cross section, the main axes of the cross sections of the free shaft part and of the shaft part to be molded in being the same or almost the same Level.

As a result of the inventive design of the new tufting needle, it is also possible to arrange it with a narrow needle pitch in the needle module, in particular if, as is preferably provided, the cross-section of the shaft part to be molded in the direction of its main axis has a much larger dimension than in the direction of its minor axis. In addition, because of its design, the new tufting needle can be molded particularly well into the module body, since during the molding process, in which the shaft part to be molded in is cast with alloy material, the alloy material flows freely between the adjacent side faces of the narrow longitudinal edges of the shaft part to be molded can. Furthermore, the new needle has a particularly good hold in the module body due to its design, since after it has been molded into it, the shaft part molded into it is tightly enclosed by the module body material without defects.

The cross-sectional shape of its shaft part to be molded in also secures the new tufting needle in the module body against rotation. In order to also secure the new needle in the module body against axial displacement, it is further provided according to the invention that its shaft part to be molded in has a flattening on at least one of its sides at a distance from its front and rear ends in a manner known per se. When the needle is molded into the module body, this flattening of alloy material is filled, which then prevents longitudinal displacement of the needle in the module body.

So that the new tufting needle assumes the correct position with respect to the associated gripper of the tufting machine after installation of the needle modules produced using the same in a tufting machine, the new tufting needle can be molded into the module body with a corresponding rotation about its longitudinal axis by a few degrees. On the other hand, it can also be provided according to the invention that the free shaft part of the new needle is twisted by a few angular degrees with respect to the shaft part to be molded in a manner known per se.

The tufting needle shown in FIGS. 1-5 has a free shaft part 11 and a shaft part 12 to be molded.

The free shaft part 11 has a flat, approximately rectangular cross section. The needle tip 13 is formed from the front end of the free shaft part. The free shaft part is provided with the needle eye 14 in connection with the needle tip. This is followed by a thread guide groove 15 provided on a side surface of the free shaft part, which extends approximately to the transition region 16 between the free shaft part and the shaft part to be molded. On its opposite side surface, the free shaft part, following the needle eye 14, also has a groove 17 and a chamfer 18, which are provided for the passage of a gripper which interacts with the needle.

The shaft part 12 to be molded has an elliptical cross section. It has a much larger dimension in the direction of its main axis than in the direction of its minor axis, namely its dimension ratio is approximately. 2: 1. At a distance from its front and rear ends, the shaft part to be molded is provided with a flattened portion 19 on each of its two opposite side surfaces. As shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, in the tufting needle shown, the free shaft part 11 is twisted by an angle a with respect to the shaft part 12 to be molded, namely by correspondingly rotating the needle in the transition region 16 between its two shaft parts. The twist is about 6 degrees.

The tufting needle, of which the cross section of its shaft part 20 to be molded is shown in FIG. 6, corresponds in terms of its design to the tufting needle shown in FIGS. 1-5 except for the difference that the cross section of its shaft part to be molded is not elliptical but diamond-shaped. The cross section of the shaft part to be molded in the direction of its main axis also has a substantially larger dimension than in the direction of its minor axis, the dimension ratio again being approximately 2: 1.

The needle module shown in FIG. 7 is produced using tufting needles, the design of which corresponds to FIGS. 1-5. In this needle module, the tufting needles with their shaft part 12 to be molded are molded into the module body 21 in such a way that their molded shaft part with its main axis is in each case exactly parallel to the end faces 22 of the module body. The small arrows drawn in the module body 21 indicate how the alloy material from which the module body is formed and which causes the needles to be formed can flow from the narrow longitudinal edges of the shaft part 12 to be molded between the side surfaces thereof.

Im übrigen entspricht dieser Nadelmodul demjenigen der Fig. 7.The needle module shown in FIG. 8 is produced using tufting needles, the shaft part 20 of which is to be molded in has a cross-sectional shape corresponding to FIG. Otherwise, this needle module corresponds to that of FIG. 7.

The needle module illustrated in FIG. 1 is produced using tufting needles, the shaft part 23 of which is to be molded in also has an elliptical cross section, but which have no twist of their free shaft part with respect to their shaft part to be molded. Since in these needles the free shaft part is not twisted in relation to the molded shaft part, these are molded with their shaft part to be molded in the module body 21 in such a way that the main axis thereof is at an angle β relative to a line parallel to the end faces 22 of the module body 21 . The angle β has a size of approximately 6 degrees.

The needle module of FIG. 10 corresponds to that of FIG. 9 except for the difference that it is manufactured using tufting nadein, the shaft part 24 of which is to be molded in has a diamond-shaped cross section.

The small arrows drawn in FIGS. 8 to 10 are also intended to indicate how, when the needles are molded into the module body, the alloy material forming them flows from the narrow longitudinal edges of the shaft parts to be molded between their longitudinal surfaces.

As far as the tufting needles have shaft parts to be molded with a diamond-shaped cross-section, this is, as shown in FIGS. 6, 8 and 10, rounded at the narrow longitudinal edges and the central part of their side surfaces, in order to thereby also contribute to a good molding in the module body.
