Abstract

The closure comprises a main lock (1) with a day bolt (10), a latch device (11) for operating the day bolt (10), a tumbling night bolt (3) and a key controlled operating device (12) for operating the nicht bolt (3), and comprises two auxiliary locks (2 and 2'), each of which comprising a tumbling night bolt (24 or 24') and a mechanical transmission (31-37 or 31'-37') which connects this night bolt (24 or 24') to the night bolt (3) of the main lock (1) which transmission comprises a bar (31 or 31') hingedly connected to the night bolt (24 or 24') of an auxiliary lock (2 or 2') and an end plate (32 or 32') hingedly connected to the bar (31 or 31') and provided with a groove (36 or 36') through which projects a gudgeon (37 or 37') which stands on the night bolt (3) of the main lock (1).

Description

  • This invention relates to a closure which comprises a main lock, which main lock comprises a lock case, a day bolt movably mounted therein which may project outside said case, a latch device for operating the day bolt, a night bolt movably mounted inside the lock case which may project outside said case, and an operating device to be controlled by a removable key member for operating the night bolt, which closure:also comprises at least one auxiliary lock, which auxiliary lock comprises a lock case, a night bolt movably mounted therein which may project outside the lock case, and a mechanical drive between the night bolt and the main lock.
  • Such closures give naturally more safety and a better closure than closures which comprise but one lock and consequently but one night bolt. The closure does generally comprise two auxiliary locks, one above and one below the main lock.
  • A closure of this kind is known from GB-A-2.051.214. In this closure, the drive between the night bolts from each one of both auxiliary locks and the main lock connects to the latch device which controls the day bolt. The bolts from the auxiliary locks are thus operated by the latch device however, in such a way that when the night bolts of the auxiliary locks lie inside the lock cases thereof, the day bolt from the main lock may be operated normally by means of the latch device. When one swings however the latch from the normal position thereof upwards, the latch device acts on the drive whereby the night locks from the auxiliary locks are brought to the closing position. Said night bolts remain in closing position even after the latch has returned to the normal position thereof, and said night bolts may only be brought to the open position by moving the latch downwards relative to the normal position thereof. The operating device of the night bolt of the main lock may only be brought to the closing position by a key when the night bolts from the auxiliary locks lie in closing position. When closing with the night bolt of the main lock, %aid drive or transmission is blocked in such a way that the night bolts of the auxiliary locks and also the latch cannot be moved from the position thereof as long as the first night bplt has not been returned to the original position thereof. There results therefrom that one has to perform two operations to bring all of the night bolts of the closure in closing position, namely the swinging with the latch of the latch device and the operating with a key of the operating device of the night bolt of the main lock. To bring all of the night bolts back to the open position also, both said operations have,to be performed, but in the reversed sequence. The use of such a closure is then also anything but simple.
  • In this known closure, the latch device has to be operatable on both sides of the door the closure is mounted on. When the door is an outer door, a swinging latch has also to be present on the outer side, which is frequently not desirable for outer doors.
  • Moreover the latch device has to be of a special structure to be able to operate in the above-described way both the day bolt of the main lock and through said drive, the night bolts-of the auxiliary locks. The drive or transmission may for example not be coupled to an existing main lock which is designed to be used without auxiliary locks.
  • The bar which is part of the drive between the main lock and the auxiliary locks may also undergo a very high stress when one tries to rotate the latch in the closing position of all of the night bolts. Said bar thus has also to be designed relatively heavy, all the more so as it is provided with a notch inside which a gudgeon standing on the night bolt from the main lock, enters when said night bolt is moved to the closing position.
  • Some of the above-mentioned drawbacks are already obviated by known closures which have a plurality of completely independently-working locks. Each such lock has a night bolt and an own operating device thereof which is controlled with a key member. Such closures are however relatively costly, while bringing.all of the night bolts in and out closing position is relatively time-consuming.
  • The invention has for: object to obviate all of the above drawbacks and to provide a closure which comprises various night bolts and is thus very safe, but which is still of simple structure and operation.
  • For this purpose, the mechanical drive or transmission connects the night bolt of the auxiliary lock to that unit formed by the night bolt from the main lock and the operating device thereof, and said drive is independent from the latch device and the day bolt operated thereby.
  • In a particular embodiment of the invention, the drive connects the night bolts proper together and the operating device of the night bolt from the main lock operates the night bolt from the auxiliary lock through said first- mentioned night bolt.
  • Preferably moreover the night bolts of the locks are tumbling bolts, while the drive between the tumbling night bolts is hingedly connected about a hinge axis eccentrically located relative to the tumbling axes thereof and in parallel relationship with said axes, to each one of said tumbling night bolts.
  • The use of tumbling night bolts is known per se from US-A-3.338.611, but said tumbling night bolts are not operated through a transmission from an operating device for a night bolt. Said known closure does not however comprise any main lock. Both tumbling bolts are connected through a transmission to a device which is operated either by a door latch or by a rod-like handle.
  • Other details and advantages of the invention will stand out from the following description of a closure according to the invention; this description is only given by way of example and does not limit the invention; the reference numerals pertain to the accompanying drawings.
    • Figure 1 is a front view partly in section from part of a door wherein a closure according to the invention is mounted.
    • Figure 2 is a section along line II-II from figure 1.
    • Figure 3 is a section along line III-III from figure 1, but drawn on a larger scale.

  • In the various figures, the same reference numerals pertain to the same elements.
  • The closure according to the figures is.mounted into an aluminium door of a structure known per se, only that part of which the closure is mounted on being shown in the figures.
  • Said closure comprises mainly three locks, namely a main lock 1 in the usual location, and two auxiliary locks 2, respectively at the top and the bottom of the door.
  • The main lock 1 is of the type with tumbling night bolt 3. Such locks are known per se, notably from Belgian Patent 871.413 dated 20th October 1978 in the name of the Applicant. Said main lock 1 will thus be described hereinbelow only as far as required to make the invention clear.
  • The night bolt 3 rotatably surrounds the tumbling axis 4 which is mounted between the two side walls of a lock case 5. Said lock case 5 is recessed into an upright section 8 of the door leaf frame and extends to an opening 7 in that side of said section 8 lying on the door leaf edge. On the outer side the lock case 5 is closed by a front plate 6 which is secured with the projecting ends thereof and by means of small screws 9, against said latter side of section 8.
  • Inside said lock case 5 is mounted in the usual way a day bolt 10, which can project through an opening in the front plate 6. Said day bolt 10 is operated in a way known . per se from the outside both by latch device 11 and by a key-operated cylinder lock device 12. For clearness sake, the latch of said latch device 11 has not been shown in the figures.
  • The night bolt 3 is also operated in a way known per se by the cylinder lock device 12.
  • Opposite the main lock 1, a lock plate 14 provided with an opening 15 for the day bolt 10 and an opening 16 for the night bolt 3, is secured with screws 17 to an upright section.13 of the fixed door frame. As it appears mostly from figures 1 and 3, the night bolt in down-tilted closing position enters the section 13 which is thus also provided in the outer side thereof with a suitable opening 18 for said bolt 3.
  • Both auxiliary locks 2 are identical, in such a way that for simplifying but that auxiliary lock 2 located below main lock 1 has been shown in the figures.
  • Each auxiliary lock 2 also comprises as the main lock 1, a lock case 19 mounted inside said section 8, which case is closed on the outer side of section 8, by an oblong front plate 20 which is secured with the ends thereof and by means of screws 21, in such a way that sliding of front plate 20 is possible over a short distance along the lengthwise direction of said section 8. Each screw 21 fastens therefore the front plate 20 against section 8 through the.agency of a small square plate 22 wherein the screw head is recessed, which small plate slidingly enters an oblong recess 23 in said front plate 20. The opening in the front plate 20 for the shaft of each screw is also,oblong in shape, in such a way that as long as the screws 21 are not tightened, the front plate 20 and thus the complete lock case 19 may be moved relative to the screws 21 and thus relative to said section 8, over a short distance.
  • Inside each lock case 19, a night bolt 24 is tumblingly mounted about a tumbling axis 25. Said tumbling night bolt 24 can tumble through an opening 26 in the front plate 20, outside the lock case 19 and thereby enter the section 13 through a suitable opening 27 in a lock plate 29 mounted with screws 28 on said section 13, and through an opening 30.
  • For practical reasons, the night bolt 24 is identical with the night bolt 3 of the main lock 1, in such a way that it is also provided with the recesses and projections which are required on said night bolt 3 for the operation thereof by the lock device 12 and for limiting the tumbling thereof. The night bolt 24 may however differ in shape from the night bolt 3.
  • The operating device for the tumbling of a night bolt 24 is formed by a mechanical drive or transmission between said night bolt 24 and the night bolt 3 of the main lock 1, which results when operating with a key the cylinder lock device 12 and said device bringing the night bolt in or out locking position, in bringing simultaneously also the night bolt 24 in or out the locking position.
  • The transmission between the night bolt 24 of the lowermost auxiliary lock 2 and the night bolt 3 of the main lock 1 is comprised of two parts, namely a bar 31 and an end plate 32.
  • The bar 31 rotatingly surrounds with the one end thereof, on the outer side of the lock case 19, a gudgeon 33 which is fast eccentrically relative to the tumbling axis 25, on the night bolt 24 and through a recess 34 in one side wall of the lock case 19, projects outside said lock case. The other end of the bar 31 is hingedly connected by a rivet 35 to the end plate 32, which end plate 32 extends next to the lock case 5 and hooks with a groove 36 over a gudgeon 37 which is fast on the night bolt 3, and through a slot 38 in the side wall of lock case 5, projects outside said lock case.
  • Next to each end thereof the bar 31 is twisted over 90° in such a way that but the ends of said bar 31 extend in parallel relationship with the side walls of the lock case 19, but the remaining portion of said bar 31 extends cross-wise thereto and thus in parallel relationship with the tumbling axis 25.
  • The cylinder lock device 12 extends cross-wise through the end plate 32, said end plate 32 being provided with an oblong recess 39 for this cylinder lock device and being alternately slidable over said device 12 during the tumbling of said night bolt 3.
  • The transmission between the night bolt 24 of the uppermost auxiliary lock 2 and the night bolt 3 of the main lock 1 is similar in structure to the above-described transmission and similar components are designated by the same reference numerals but with a !. Said latter transmission differs from the above-described transmission but in the bar 31' being twisted over the whole length thereof, while the end plate 32' extends mainly on the top side of the gudgeon 37 and consequently does not surround the cylinder lock device 12 but actually the latch device 11. Said end plate 32' then also differs somewhat in the length thereof, while the recess 39' for the latch device 11 differs in shape from the recess 39 for the cylinder lock device 12. The lowermost end of said end plate 32' overlaps the uppermost end of the end plate 32 and the grooves 36 and 36' in said end plates lie accurately facing one another. Said grooves 36 and 36' both open on that edge lying on the side of the front plate, of the end plates 32 and 32'. With the groove 36 or 36' thereof both end plates 32 and 32' are slipped over one and the same gudgeon 37. Said gudgeon 37 is provided as well as gudgeon 33 with an overthiek head in such a way that the end plates 32 and 32' cannot slide sidewise off said gudgeon 37.
  • To mount the closure, the auxiliary locks 2 are first arranged before mounting the main slot 1. For this purpose the small end plate 32 or 32' is first fitted with the bar 31 or 31' connected thereto in the section 8, through the opening which is provided for the lock case 19. Such fitting is easily possible due to the bar 31 or 31' being somewhat resiliently bendable due to the particular twisting thereof. The front plates 20 are fastened temporarily with the screws 21 without ho ever tightening said screws. Both small end plates 32 and 32' are accurately located next to one another opposite the opening 7 for the lock case 5 and through said opening the lock case 5 is now set in position whereby care is taken to slide the gudgeon 37 into the grooves 36 and 36' from said end plates 32 and 32'. The opening 7 in the section 8 for fitting said lock case 5 is provided with a small projection for the projecting gudgeon 37. The lock case 5 is secured to section 8 by tightening the screws 9 and the lock cases 19 are blocked at the suitable spacing from the lock case 5 by tightening the screws 21. The lock cases 14 and 29 are naturally also mounted on section 13 and the cylinder lock device 12 on the lock case 5.
  • When now by means of a key the cylinder lock device 12 is so operated as to tumble the night bolt 3, the night bolt 24 from the auxiliary locks 2 also tumbles automatically in the same direction and to the same extent. The tumbling of the night bolt 3 is limited by the operating device of said same bolt, while the tumbling of the night bolts 24 is limited due to the recess 34 in the side wall of lock case 19 through which projects said gudgeon 33, being limited in the size thereof.
  • When the night bolts 24 lie together with the night bolt 3 in the closing position, said night bolts 24 cannot be tumbled separately back upwards to the open position thereof. When trying to tumble upwards the night bolt 24 from the lowermost auxiliary lock 2, the bar 31 pertaining thereto is urged by pulling in such a way that even a relatively light bar 31 can prevent any tumbling of said night bolt 24 when the night bolt 3 does not also tumble together. When trying to tumble upwards the night bolt 24 from the uppermost auxiliary lock 2, the bar 31' pertaining thereto is urged by pushing. Due to said bar 31' being twisted over the whole length thereof, it is actually somewhat resiliently bendable when arranging said bar in section 8, but it is still rigid enough not to buckle under such a pushing stress.
  • The above-described closure thus insures a very good protection. Still the structure thereof is relatively simple. The main lock may easily be obtained from a known lock which is used without auxiliary locks, such as for example a lock as described in the above-mentioned Belgian Patent 871.213 in the name of the Applicant. It is only required to mpunt a gudgeon 37 on the night bolt 3 and to provide a slot 38 for said gudgeon in the side wall of the lock case 5. The main lock from the above-described closure may also be used alone without the transmissions and the auxiliary locks.
  • The auxiliary locks 2 do not have any operating member which may be operated from the outside with a key member, but they are operated by the cylinder lock device 12 which operates the night bolt 3 from the main lock 1. The operation of the above-described closure is then also very easy and fast. With a single key movement it is possible to bring simultaneously all of the night bolts in or out the closing position.
  • The invention is in no way limited to the above embodiment and within the scope of the patent application, many changes may be brought to the described embodiment, notably as regards the shape, composition, arrangement and number of the components which are used for the embodying.
  • Particularly the closure does not have to be necessarily mounted on an aluminium door. It may also be mounted in a wooden door.
  • The closure does not have either to be fitted with two auxiliary locks. It may also be designed with but one auxiliary lock.
  • The bars from the transmission or drives may possibly be adjustable in the length.
  • The night bolt does not have necessarily to be shaped as shown in the accompanying figures. Said light bolts may also for example be hookshaped, in which case the closure may also be used with sliding doors or sliding windows.
  • The operating device of the main lock does naturally not have to be a cylinder lock device. It may be any lock device operatable from the outside with a removable key member, which can bring the night bolt in and out the closing position.

Claims (8)

1. A closure which comprises :
- a main lock (1), which main lock (1) comprises :
- a lock case (5),
- a day bolt (10) movably mounted therein, which may project outside said lock case (5),
- a latch device (11) for operating the day bolt (10),
- a night bolt (3) movably mounted inside the lock case (5), which night bolt may project outside the lock case (5), and
- an operating device (12) controlled by a removable key member for operating the night bolt (3), and
- at least one auxiliary lock (2 or 2') which auxiliary lock (2 or 2') comprises :
- a lock case (19 or 19'),
- a night bolt (24 or 24') movably mounted therein, which may project outside the lock case (19 or 19'), and
- a mechanical drive or transmission (31-37 or 31'-37') between the night bolt (24 or 24') and the main lock (1),

characterized in that the mechanical drive (31-37 or 31'-37') connects the night bolt (24 or 24') of the auxiliary lock (2 or 2') to the unit formed by the night bolt (3) of the main lock (1) and the operating device thereof (12), and is independent of the latch device (11) and the day bolt (10) operated thereby..

A closure as defined in claim 1, characterized in that the drive connects the night bolts proper (3 and 24 or 24') together, and the operating device (12) of the night bolt (3) of the main lock (1) operates the night bolt (24 or 24') of the auxiliary lock(2 or 2') through the agency of said first night bolt (3).

A closure as defined in claim 2, characterized in that the night bolts (3 and 24 or 24') of the locks (1 and 2 or 2') are tumbling bolts, while the drive (31-37 or 31'-37') between the tumbling night bolts (3 and 24 or 24') is hingedly connected to each one of said tumbling night bolts (3 and 24 or 24') about the hinge axis (33, 37 or 37') in parallel relationship with the tumbling axes thereof (4 and 25 or 25') and arranged eccentrically relative thereto.

A closure as defined in claim 3, characterized in that the drive (31-37 or 31'-37') is hingedly connected with the one end thereof directly to the one night bolt (24 or 24'), is provided at the other end thereof with a groove (36 or 36'), and comprises a gudgeon (37 or 37') which stands on the other bolt (3) and whereover said other end is slipped.
5. A closure as defined in claim 4, characterized in that the drive (31-37 or 31'-37') between two night bolts (3 and 24 or 24') comprises a bar (31 or 31') and an end plate (32 or 32') hingedly connected thereto, which end plate (32 or 32') is provided with said groove (36 or 36').

A closure as defined in claim 5, characterized in that the main lock (1) is located above the auxiliary lock (2), while the bar (31) of the drive (31-37) between the night bolts (3 and 24) of said locks (1 and 2) is twisted over 90° adjacent each end thereof, in such a way that the bar ends are directed cross-wise to the tumbling axis (4 or 25) of the night bolts (3 and 24), but the middle bar portion runs in parallel relationship with said tumbling axis (4 or 25).
7. A closure as defined in claim 5, characterized in that the main lock (1) is located below the auxiliary lock (2') and the bar (31') of the drive (3'1'-37') between the night bolts (3 and 24') of said locks (1 and 2') is twisted substantially over the whole length thereof.
8. A closure as defined in either one of claims 4 and 5, characterized in that it comprises besides the main lock, two auxiliary locks (2 and 2') which are respectively located above and below the main lock and which each comprise a night bolt (24 or 24') and a mechanical drive (31-37 or 31'-37') between said night bolts (24 or 24') and the night bolt (3) from the main lock (1), whereby both drives (31-37 and 31'-37') are hingedly slipped with the one end thereof, by means of a groove (36 or 36'), over one and the same gudgeon (37) standing on the night bolt (3) of the main lock (1).
