The arms fit into female slippers on the removable seat to effect the transfer of the seat to the vehicle.

Description

The present invention relates to a device for operating the transfer of a physically handicapped person from his wheelchair to a motor vehicle and vice versa, by holding him in his seat.

Similar devices are already known, such as that described in British Patent No. 640,765. In this embodiment, the seat of the wheelchair is separable from the chassis of the latter and can be brought with its occupant inside a motor vehicle after having taken a ramp constituted by a pair of retractable rails under said chassis. The transfer of the seat thus requires that it be equipped with casters to be moved on the ramp.

A device of this kind considerably increases the structure of the wheelchair and does not appear to be easy to use, in particular since it requires the intervention of a third person in order to move the seat on its access ramp. . In addition, during this transfer, the occupant is in an uncomfortable position since the seat is necessarily tilted. It should also be noted that this device can prove to be inoperative when the motor vehicle and the wheelchair are at different levels from the ground, the ramp then being able to exhibit a high degree of inclination.

The device, object of the present invention, avoids this kind of drawbacks. His wheelchair being provided with a removable seat resting on a chassis mounted on two rear support wheels and two front steering wheels, the transfer of the seat is carried out by means of a device which comprises two parallel telescopic slides secured to a vehicle, extendable towards the outside and retractable towards the inside thereof, lifting cylinders mounted on the vehicle so as to support said slides and two complementary slides fixed to the removable seat and capable of cooperating by fitting with the parallel telescopic slides . The lifting cylinders can be actuated together or individually to move or vertically orient said parallel telescopic slides.

Thus, when the wheelchair carrying the disabled person is stored near the motor vehicle, it suffices to take out the telescopic slides by adjusting them at the level of the complementary slides which equip the seat, to engage in the latter and to act vertically, bottom to top, these telescopic slides, to separate the seat from the chassis of the wheelchair and finally, to bring said telescopic slides inside the vehicle in order to penetrate the seat. Obviously, the reverse sequence of operations will be carried out to bring the disabled person back on his wheelchair.

The vertical and horizontal mobility of the telescopic slides equipping the motor vehicle, obtained by the play of the jacks, thus allows a paraplegic, for example, to carry out his transhipment himself, which has the great advantage of increasing his independence, and relieve those around him. On the other hand, it will be noted that, thanks to the vertical and tilting mobility of the telescopic slides by means of the aforesaid lifting cylinders, this transhipment can be effected whatever the slope of the ground on which the wheelchair and the motor vehicle are parked and will avoid thus the aforementioned drawbacks of the devices of the prior art.

Other characteristics and other advantages of the invention will appear on reading the description below, giving, by way of non-limiting example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, a preferred embodiment of a device according to the invention.
  • Figure 1 is a partially exploded perspective view of the wheelchair.
  • Figure 2 is a partially cutaway perspective view of the assembly of this device after removal of the chassis from said chair.

The wheelchair, shown in Figure 1, is constituted by a frame 1a and by a removable part 1 forming the frame of the seat. This chassis is formed by four horizontal tubular beams 2 fixed two by two in the vertical and horizontal planes by means of four vertical beams 3 and two crosspieces 4 arranged in a cross. This chassis 1 a is mounted on the one hand on two front steering wheels 5 of small diameter and provided with appropriate braking means to facilitate the various manipulations during transhipment and, on the other hand, on two rear support wheels 6 of large diameter. The axes of rotation 7 of the latter are fixed to the end of extendable arms parallel to the plane of symmetry of the wheelchair and consist of two slides 8 and 9. The extension of the arms thus makes it possible to erase the rear wheels so that they do not interfere with the transverse sliding of the seat 1b during its introduction into the motor vehicle as will be seen below. In addition, the mobility of the axes 7 advantageously makes it possible to move the center of gravity of the chair and thus obtain better stability of the latter on the carrying surface, in particular when it is used in the relaxation position by tilting its backrest. . On the other hand, it will be noted that latches 10 are arranged on the slides 8 in order to block them in a determined position.

At each end of the two horizontal upper beams 2 are welded guides 11 of semi-cylindrical shape, intended for the housing of four tubular elements 12 integral with the framework of the removable seat 1b. Of course, suitable fixing means not shown, such as for example riveted fasteners, will keep the elements 12 in their housings during normal use of the wheelchair.

The frame of the seat 1b for its part is formed on the one hand, of a horizontal frame constituted by two longitudinal members 13 parallel to the axis of symmetry of the chair and by two slides 14 said to be complementary and perpendicular to said axis, and, d 'other hand, two vertical tubular uprights 15 connected to their base to said horizontal frame and provided at their top with removable and adjustable handles 16. As can be seen in Figure 2, the seat itself is achieved by the addition of fabrics stretched between the uprights 15 on the one hand, and between the side members 13 on the other hand. Note also the presence of joints 17 on the uprights 15 allowing the inclination of the seat back for the use of the wheelchair in the relaxed position.

Obviously, the latter, as illustrated in FIG. 1, has no other object than to clearly show the device of the invention, the mode of use of which will be described below. Also, it was not considered useful to represent all the accessories found on a conventional wheelchair, such as for example a footrest support, a headrest support, armrests, elements which can also be adapted the chair of the invention.

The latter is equipped with a seat transfer system, essentially consisting of a pair of three-stage parallel telescopic slides 19 which extend towards the outside of the vehicle, transversely to its longitudinal axis and each provided with three support rollers 20 intended to be housed in the complementary slides 14 of the seat 1b.

The telescopic slides 19 are fixed on a plate 21 itself resting on the vehicle body 18 by means of four lifting cylinders 22 of which only two have been shown. These jacks are arranged at the four angles of the plate 21 and will be actuated together or individually, according to the most appropriate case of use, by means of a control panel 23 within reach of the occupant of the seat 1b. The purpose of these jacks is, on the one hand, to orient the plate 21, in particular when the wheelchair and the vehicle are parked on different slopes, and on the other hand, to correct the height of the telescopic slides 19 to allow their correct introduction into the complementary slides 14 of the seat 1 b.

Thus, once this introduction has been carried out by elevation of the plate 21, the elevation of the telescopic slides 19 by the jacks 22 releases the seat 1 from the chassis 1 a by dislodging the elements 12 from their guides 11, and it suffices, having taken before taking care to move the rear support wheel 6 adjacent to the vehicle, by moving its axis of rotation by developing slides 8 and 9, to fold up the telescopic slides on which the seat 1b is engaged so that its occupant takes place in the inside the vehicle.

It will be noted that the handles 16 are positioned so as not to constitute an obstacle during the introduction of the seat into the vehicle and that a simple locking device 24 makes it possible to block it once it is introduced.

Of course, other embodiments remaining in the spirit of the invention could have been represented; this is how, for example, the slides 19 could bear directly on the head of the jacks 22, which would make it possible to remove the plate 21.
