Polyvinylenalkohol ist ein polymerer mehrwertiger Alkohol mit einer durchlaufenden Kohlenstoffkette, bei der sich im Idealfall an jedem Kohlenstoffatom eine alkoholische Hydroxylgruppe befindet, wie sich aus nachstehender Formel ergibt:Polyvinyl alcohol is a polymeric polyhydric alcohol with a continuous carbon chain, in which ideally there is an alcoholic hydroxyl group on each carbon atom, as can be seen from the following formula:
/—CH-CH-\/ —CH-CH- \
V OH OH Jn V OH OH Y n
Polyvinylalkohol wurde erstmals von M. S. Newman und R. W. Ad dor (Journ. Am. Chem. Polyvinyl alcohol was first used by M. S. Newman and R. W. Ad dor (Journ. Am. Chem. Soc., 75 [1953], p. 1263) on the basis of a small manual experiment in 1953. More details about the technology of the polymerization none were made. The authors mentioned received a water-soluble product. In contrast to these authors received in 1957 C. C. Unruh and D. A. Smith (Journ. Of Organic Chemistry, 23 [1958], p.625) a water-insoluble product by suspending polyvinylene carbonate in 1 η sodium hydroxide solution at room temperature. The polyvinylene carbonate required for this is in a sealed tube at 75 ° C with 0.5% benzoyl peroxide as initiator.
German Auslegeschrift 1 040 789 discloses a process for the preparation of polymers from vinylene carbonate and copolymers from vinylene carbonate and other unsaturated organic compounds, which is characterized in that vinylene carbonate is subjected to polymerizing conditions under high pressure of at least 350 kg / cm 2.
Patents 2,847,401 and 2,847,402 disclose methods of manufacture
Das durchschnittliche Molekulargewicht der Polyvinylencarbonate ist verhältnismäßig niedrig, so daß die Hydrolyse dieser Produkte zu wasserlöslichen Polyvinylenalkoholen führt.of polymers of vinylene carbonate or copolymers of vinylene carbonate with halogen-substituted Ethylene or unsaturated organic compounds known at which pressures of about 350 atmospheres and above can be applied. The average molecular weight the polyvinylene carbonate is relatively low, so that the hydrolysis of these products becomes water-soluble Polyvinyl alcohols leads.
The method of U.S. Patent 2,918,478, the production of vinylene carbonate by chlorination of ethylene carbonate in the presence of UV light and the implementation of monochlorethylene carbonate with triethylamine, leads to a vinylene carbonate, which due to adhering, very difficult to separate impurities likewise only polymers with a relatively low average molecular weight supplies.
The invention relates to a process for the production of polyvinyl alcohol from the monomeric Vinylene carbonate in a one-step process, which consists in that one work step the vinylene carbonate of a bead or emulsion polymerization in an aqueous medium or a other non-dissolving medium, such as gasoline, hydrocarbons or the like, with the addition of emulsifiers and polymerization initiators, such as peroxides, persulfates and similar compounds, subjected, the polymer acidified and hydrolyzed for the purpose of coagulation of the polyvinylene carbonate. The presence of water or gasoline as claimed in accordance with the present invention is made for the success of the polymerization and for the properties shown Polymers are crucial, and the products obtained have the opposite of the known products a much higher average molecular weight, which is so large that the hydrolysis of the Polymer leads to completely water-insoluble polyvinyl alcohols.
The polymerization is expediently carried out in an inert gas atmosphere at temperatures of about 20 to 100 ° C. or optionally at higher temperatures with the application of pressure. After the end of the polymerization, the mixture is used to coagulate polyvinylene carbonate acidified and then refluxed for a long time to accelerate the hydrolysis. After removing the acid and drying, an almost pure polyvinyl alcohol is obtained.
100 g of vinylene carbonate are mixed with 100 ecm of water and 10 g of sodium persulfate with the addition of an emulsifier, e.g., about 1% sodium oleate to the total amount, heated to about 80 ° C for about 24 hours while stirring vigorously. After completion During the polymerization, the mixture is used to coagulate the polyvinylene carbonate thus prepared acidified and then refluxed to accelerate hydrolysis. Filter or the polymer is centrifuged off and dried and has a yield of about 70 to 80% polymer, based on the starting material.
Vorteilhafterweise arbeitet man dabei in indifferenter Gasatmosphäre.If you work at temperatures of over 100 ° C, so one has to apply pressure. It is advantageous to work in an indifferent gas atmosphere.
