Description
Process for the production of hydrocyanic acid from carbon monoxide and ammonia It is known to produce hydrogen cyanide directly from carbon monoxide and ammonia by that the gases mentioned are passed over catalysts at elevated temperatures, which essentially consist of γ-aluminum oxide. Such catalysts are usually by precipitation of an aluminum salt solution with ammonia and then Drying of the gel obtained. To activate these catalysts the aluminum salt solutions are generally mixed with a suspension prior to precipitation of colloidal graphite or with metal salt solutions, such as. B. zirconium nitrate. It has been shown that a group of metals that are otherwise called activating Additives are common, so z. B. cobalt, nickel, vanadium, iron and uranium, among the conditions of the hydrogen cyanide synthesis cannot be used, since these metals at the usual working temperatures between 58o and 600 ° a decomposition of the ammonia in nitrogen and hydrogen to an undesirable extent.
The obtained with the contacts made in the manner described above Sales are dependent in particular on the mixing ratio between ammonia and carbon oxide as well as the chosen reaction temperature.
It has now been found that, compared to the process using the known contacts, considerably higher conversions can be achieved in the hydrogen cyanide synthesis from carbon oxide and ammonia if zinc oxide in the aluminum oxide catalysts, which advantageously contain 0.5 to 3% of customary activators, is present in amounts of 2 to 10 ° / o is installed. The zinc-containing catalysts used in the process of the invention can be prepared, for example, by adding a suspension of zinc oxide or a water-soluble zinc salt, expediently zinc nitrate, to the aluminum salt solution before precipitation with ammonia. As is shown in particular in Example i, with a catalyst containing zinc oxide, an increase in conversion of about 10% is obtained compared with the processes which work with conventional activated aluminum oxide contacts. As already mentioned above, vanadium is one of the activating additives that were previously not usable under the conditions of hydrocyanic acid synthesis, since experience has shown that strong decomposition of the ammonia is caused by vanadium-containing catalysts of the usual composition. Surprisingly, it has now also been found that the zinc oxide-containing contacts used in the process of the invention can be further increased in their effectiveness by adding vanadium, without the presence of the vanadium compounds in the catalyst causing undesirable decomposition of the ammonia to a significant extent. The vanadium-containing catalysts are expediently prepared by impregnation in solutions containing vanadium compounds and a subsequent annealing treatment. The procedure according to the invention with catalysts containing zinc oxide and vanadium is particularly advantageous if these have a vanadium content of from 1 to 3.5 ° / p, calculated on vanadium oxide.
The use of the vanadium-soaked, zinc oxide-containing contacts makes it is possible to achieve good conversions and yields, especially at working temperatures below 6oo ° to achieve. An advantageous way of working is to do the implementation below 56o °, e.g. B. at temperatures of 52o to 55o ° to perform. This occurs practically No more ammonia decomposition at all, so that the vanadium content of the contact only has a beneficial effect on the course of the reaction without the ammonia yield being significant to belittle.
On the basis of the previously used hydrogen cyanide synthesis from ammonia and carbon monoxide experience has generally found it necessary. the To bring synthesis gases with a large excess of carbon oxide to use. For example, ammonia was essentially used in mixing ratios and carbon oxide like i: io to i: 2o worked. It should be achieved by that at high conversions the decomposition of the ammonia due to the large excess Carbon oxide suppressed and the processing of the reaction gases was facilitated. When carrying out the method according to the invention, it has now also been found that, surprisingly, you can also use significantly lower mixing ratios of ammonia and carbon dioxide can work and at the same time despite lower sales the same size of the synthesis apparatus leads to a higher yield of hydrogen cyanide in the time unit arrives. On the other hand, it enables the use of mixing ratios of ammonia and carbon oxide in the range from i: 2 to i: 5, if necessary, the implementation the synthesis in much smaller-sized apparatuses that with regard to the expense of the system costs and the expenditure for heating and circulation of gases in operation offer considerable economic advantages. When using the Contrary to expectations, the above-described catalysts decompose ammonia even with mixing ratios of 2 to 5 parts of carbon oxide to ammonia in noteworthy proportions Extent does not take place, so that with a favorable application of hydrocyanic acid a practical 100% yield can be achieved. For working according to the invention has A mixing ratio of ammonia to carbon dioxide such as i: 3.5 proves to be special proved beneficial. By using the synthesis gases in such mixing ratios This results in a significant compared to the methods previously used in technology more favorable space-time ratio when working according to the present invention.
Because the decomposition of ammonia is virtually completely eliminated there can be a further improvement in the technical and local design achieve the inventive method when the entire process is closed Circulated and the unconverted portions of the synthesis gases in turn be fed back quantitatively into the process.
The effect of the novel used in the method according to the invention Contacts are explained in more detail in the following examples.
A contact tube of 14 × 960 mm with a preheating zone of 310 mm length is charged with the contact over a length of 400 mm and heated to 600 ° C. 100 liters of a gas mixture from one part ammonia to 20 parts carbon oxide are passed through the pipe every hour. Under these conditions, the conversion when using a contact consisting of gi ° / a -y-aluminum oxide, 2% graphite and 6.5 l) /, zinc oxide is 76.8 to 79.2 ° / a. When the tube is charged with a contact compound of the appropriate composition, produced in the usual way, but without zinc oxide, a conversion of only 70.5 to 72% is achieved under otherwise identical reaction conditions, which corresponds to an output of hydrocyanic acid of 3.81 / hour. or 3.41 / hour is equivalent to. Example 2 The aluminum oxide contact commonly used is extremely sensitive to changes in the reaction temperature. Thus, in the same apparatus as in Example i, with a zinc-free contact with a mixture of ammonia to carbon oxide such as i: io at 600 ° C., an hourly output of 21, at 5q.0 ° C. an output of 1.41 hydrogen cyanide was achieved. Also at 5q.0 ° C with the same mixing ratio of the synthesis gases, the use of the inventive catalyst made of aluminum oxide with 5% zinc oxide leads to an output of 2.6 l hydrocyanic acid / hour with an increase in conversion of 85%.
Example 3 According to the procedure for a zinc oxide-containing catalyst according to Example 2 results from the addition of vanadium according to the invention to the catalyst with a mixing ratio of ammonia to carbon oxide such as i: io and 54o ° C in the same apparatus a further increase in sales by about 80%, whereby the application of hydrocyanic acid to 5 liters / hour. increases. Example 4 At Use a mixing ratio of 1 part ammonia to 4 parts carbon oxide under conditions which correspond to those in Example 3, the conversion is around 27% back, while the hydrocyanic acid output increased by 60 per cent to 81 per hour. elevated.
