Description
Process for the preparation of aqueous colloidal dispersions of polymers Polymers of unsaturated organic compounds are often in the form of aqueous Dispersions used. However, such dispersions are often not easy or not at all by direct polymerization of the unsaturated compound in one aqueous medium obtainable in the presence of a dispersant. In many cases there is either no polymerization at all or it only occurs up to one very low degree. In addition, if the dispersion has formed, it can become unstable and the particles can be too big. These deficiencies, which are particularly evident in the case of the haloethylenes, such as tetrafluoroethylene or trifluorochloroethylene, occur, the fact attributed that the usual dispersants tend to the polymerization reaction to break off if the chain length is undesirably short. In addition, in many cases, and especially again in the case of the haloethylenes, the finely divided one initially formed Polymers are not readily dispersible in water and the dispersions obtained are often characterized by a lack of stability and coarse particle size.
According to the invention, the polymerization of a polymerizable, monomeric, ethylenically unsaturated, organic, dissolved in an aqueous medium Compound in the presence of a water-soluble polymerization initiator and a water-soluble ionizable dispersant, consisting of an ionic (i.e. H. a cationic or anionic), hydrophilic group and a hydrophobic group Component, executed. The hydrophobic component consists of a fluoroalkyl group with at least 6 aliphatic carbon atoms, of which all but one at most, the one closest to the solubilizing group standing, at least 2 fluorine atoms and the terminal carbon atom still additionally i has a hydrogen or fluorine atom. In a preferred embodiment and especially when the monomer to be polymerized is a halogenoethylene, the polymerization is carried out in the presence of both the dispersant described above as well as in the presence of 0.1 to 12 percent by weight, based on the aqueous medium, a stabilizer consisting of a saturated and under the reaction conditions liquid hydrocarbon with more than 16 carbon atoms.
The invention is based primarily on the finding that the the above-mentioned ionizable water-soluble compounds from a cationic or anionic hydrophilic group and a hydrophobic component surprisingly are effective dispersants and produce more stable, concentrated, aqueous Colloidal dispersions of the respective polymer directly through the polymerization of monomeric, polymerizable, unsaturated, organic compounds in aqueous Enable media. Such dispersions often have concentrations of polymers 15 to 30 per cent and even considerably higher, even in the case of the haloethylenes, such as B. tetrafluoroethylene and trifluorochloroethylene, in which a direct polymerization practically impossible in an aqueous medium when using the usual dispersants is. In addition, in many cases, by the dispersion polymerization in the presence of the dispersant according to the invention is a polymer having a higher molecular weight than obtained with the usual dispersants. In addition, the dispersant leads to polymer dispersions in which the particles of the polymers are extremely small and usually at least one dimension less than o, i 1c to have. In addition, the new dispersants often have a considerable effect Increase in the polymerization rate.
The polymerization of the monomer in an aqueous medium, which is one the dispersants described here and a water-soluble one, the polymerization contains triggering substance is carried out according to methods known per se. Press from r to 3ooo at and temperatures from 0 to 2oo ° or higher can be used, where the usually preferred pressures between i and iooo at and the temperatures lie between 2o and 100 °. The polymerisation trigger is a water-soluble, Suitably water-soluble inorganic peroxide compound which forms free radicals Nature, e.g. B. a persulfate, perborate, percarbonate, hydrogen peroxide, or organic Nature, such as B. disuccinic acid peroxide. The most effective and useful of these Substances are ammonium persulfate and alkali persulfates, e.g. B. sodium and potassium persulfate. There can also be water-soluble azo compounds, e.g. B. disodium-y, y'-azo-bis- (y-cyanvalerate) (U.S. Patent 247i959) or a, a'-azodiisobutyramidine hydrochloride will. Amounts of from 0.01 to 5%, based on that, are normally used Weight of the polymerizable monomer, and suitably from oi to 2%; even smaller or larger amounts can be added. Numerous suitable substances of this type (catalysts) are z. See, for example, U.S. Patents 2,393,967 and 2,394,243 described. The polymerization can also be carried out by irradiation with ultraviolet light in the presence of photopolymerization catalysts such as uranyl nitrate, benzoin or. Like., be effected.
It can also be advantageous to promote the polymerization Medium, e.g. B. a water-soluble salt of an oxidizable sulfoxy compound, the when treated with acids releases sulfur dioxide, to be used, such as sodium sulfite, Sodium bisulfite, sodium thiosulfate, sodium hydrosulfite or the like. Is expedient a small amount of a water-soluble ferrous salt, e.g. B. Ferrous sulfate, in added in an amount such that 0.2 to 50 parts per million are based on ferrous ions by weight of the aqueous medium. The aqueous polymerization system can also Buffers such as borax, disodium phosphate, ammonium carbonate, sodium acetate or the like, contain. Finely divided, inert solids that serve as fillers, e.g. B. clay, Titanium dioxide, silica or the like can also be present in the polymerization mixture be. These inert solids are advantageously as already formed, aqueous colloidal dispersions used.
The dispersants according to the invention can be represented by the general formula B (C FZ) "(C Hz) m A, where B is hydrogen or fluorine, n is an integer at least equal to 5, where o or i, the sum of na - f-n is at least 6 and A is a cationic or anionic, hydrophilic group. All of these dispersants are fluoroalkyl compounds.
The polar, hydrophilic group can be one of the known cationic or anionic groups, e.g. B. a carboxyl group, - CO O H, in the form of an alkali or ammonium salt, ammonia or a quaternary ammonium hydroxide, a phosphoric acid group, -OPO (OM) 2, a sulfuric acid group, - OS 0. (0 M), where M is hydrogen, Is alkali metal, ammonium or substituted ammonium, a phosphorous acid group, - P 0 (0 M), where M has the same meaning as above, or an amine group, e.g. B. -NHz or - , where R is an alkyl and the amine group is present as a derivative of a strong acid or as a quaternary ammonium compound. The nature of the solubilizing group is not critical, provided that it gives the compound as a whole a solubility in water of at least 0.1% at 100 °, as is necessary for the dispersant to work satisfactorily in aqueous polymerization systems. While a chain length of at least 6 aliphatic carbons is advisable in the hydrophobic part of the molecule in order to give the product sufficient surface-active properties, the mentioned minimum solubility should be the whole number n in the above formula, i.e. the number of difluoromethylene groups to not more than 20, and expediently limit to no more than 12. In the case of the less active hydrophilic groups, n should expediently not be greater than 8.
Among the dispersants suitable for use in accordance with the invention, some groups of compounds are particularly advantageous; they are therefore discussed below: A. Also salts of these acids with saturated alkylamines, specifically appropriately with those with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, ie substituted Ammonium salts and salts of quaternary ammonium bases, e.g. B. tetraethanolammonium hydroxide can be used. It is not necessary to use a single salt of any particular acid. Since the polyfluoroparaffin alcohols and / or polyfluoroalkanoic acids used as starting substances are obtained as mixtures of components with different chain lengths, it is more economical to use salts of mixed acids B (C F2) n COOH, where n is between 6 and 2o, especially between 6 and 12, can vary.

The polyfluoroalkylamines with a primary amino group can be prepared by reducing the corresponding polyfluoroalkanoic acid amides, which in turn are obtained from the acid chlorides. The reducing agent used is expediently lithium aluminum hydride in an anhydrous medium, e.g. B. absolute ether. Fluoroalkylamines with a tertiary amino group, ie two of the remaining nitrogen valencies are saturated with lower alkyl groups, can be prepared by reacting tetrafluoroethylene with a tertiary amine in the presence of a free radical-forming catalyst (see British patent 583874). For their use in aqueous polymerization systems, the fluoroalkylamines are converted into salts with strong acids, expediently with acids having a dissociation constant of i X io -5, especially with strong non-oxidizing mineral acids.

The invention is illustrated by the following examples in which parts, unless otherwise noted, as weight is specified, explained in more detail.
Examples I to XIV illustrate the use of a water-soluble salt of a polyfluoroalkanoic acid falling under group A. as a dispersant. Example I A solution of two parts of a mixture of polyfluoroalkanoic acids H (C F2) n C 0 OH, where n has an average value of io.6, as a neutral equivalent of 577 indicates, in 100 parts of distilled water was heated to boiling and added with sodium hydroxide neutralized. The obtained soap-like solution was filtered at the boiling point into a pressure vessel having a volume capacity of 325 parts. To the solution, kept at 65 to 70 ° by external heating, 0.025 parts of ammonium persulfate were added, after which the pressure vessel was evacuated and kept under reduced pressure for a few minutes, the solution being allowed to boil to remove the dissolved atmospheric oxygen therefrom . A cylinder filled with tetrafluoroethylene gas under a pressure of 3.85 at was then connected to the reaction vessel, which was mechanically shaken for 13.1 hours at 65 to 70 °, while the tetrafluoroethylene was continuously under an average pressure of 2.8 to 4, 2 at was supplied. The reaction product obtained was a colloidal polytetrafluoroethylene dispersion containing 49 percent by weight of polymer, which was fairly clear with a bluish opalescence. At 5% solids it was completely transparent; it was very stable and did not tend to settle or flocculate over time, not even when standing for long periods of time. Electron photomicrographs showed that about 20% of the particles were between about 0.03 and about 0.03 microns in size and some particles were between about 0.03 and about 0.05 microns in size. Another characteristic of this dispersion was the ribbon-like shape of a number of the particles. EXAMPLE II A mixture of one part of the potassium salt of hexadecofluoronanoic acid, 0.23 parts of borax, 0.5 part of potassium persulphate and 0.25 part of sodium bisulphite was dissolved in so much water that there were a total of 100 parts. The solution was kept in motion for 1.8 hours at 71 to 87 ° and under a tetrafluoroethylene pressure of 3.5 to 4.2 atm. A polytetrafluoroethylene dispersion with ig% polymer was obtained, in which the smaller size of the particles was o, oi to 0.05 , u and many of the particles had an elongated shape. The dispersion was slightly opalescent and largely clear.
Dicke, o,i bis o,2 ,u Breite und im Durchschnitt mit 0,75 ,cc Länge waren.EXAMPLE III To a solution in a pressure vessel of 2 parts of the ammonium salt of dodecafluoroheptanoic acid H (C F2) 6 COON H4 in 93 parts of distilled water were added 0.05 parts of potassium persulfate and 5 parts of a paraffin wax with a melting point of 56 to 58 ° as Added stabilizer, which should protect the colloid against the precipitating influence of the subsequent mixing. The mixture was brought to 80 ° to 85 ° and the autoclave was evacuated and kept under reduced pressure for a few minutes to remove air and dissolved oxygen. Then tetrafluoroethylene gas was fed to the reaction vessel up to a manometer pressure of 4.2 atm. The reaction vessel was kept in motion for 3.6 hours at 80 ° to 85 °. During this time, the gas pressure was reset to 4.2 at each time it had fallen to 3.8 at as a result of the conversion of the gas into polymer. A colloidal dispersion of polytetrafluoroethylene with 34% solids was obtained as the reaction product. Electron photomicrographs showed that almost all of the polymeric particles were elongated ribbon-shaped about 0.05 li. Thickness, o, i to o, 2, u width and averaging 0.75 , cc length were.
A pressure vessel was charged with 0.5 parts of the ammonium salt of eicosafluorundecanoic acid, 0.2 parts of potassium persulfate, 2 parts of a paraffin wax melting at 56 to 58 ° and distilled water to a total of 100 parts, heated to 73 to 76 ° and evacuated. The vessel was then placed under a manometer pressure of 3.7 atm with a gas mixture consisting of 76 parts of tetrafluoroethylene and 24 parts of trifluorochloroethylene, the gas mixture being continuously fed to the pressure vessel. This was kept moving for 5.3 hours. As a reaction product was obtained a clear, opalescent bluish dispersion of tetrafluoroethylene-trifluorochloroethylene - # vlischpolymerisat in a ratio of 76: 24. The dispersion containing 16 ° / o solid. The polymeric particles were spherical in shape and less than o, i, u in diameter.
Example V A: Mixture of 1 part of the ammonium salt of hexadecafluoronanoic acid and 0.1 part of potassium persulfate was added to about 3 parts of molten paraffin. The resulting one containing the polymerization initiator and the dispersant Paraffin block was distilled in 100 parts into a glass-lined pressure vessel Water was introduced, air and dissolved oxygen were removed, and then tetrafluoroethylene gas placed under a pressure of 15.7 at. Ethylene gas was then added to the vessel, until a total pressure of 313 at was reached. The reaction vessel was 8 hours shaken at 65 °, during which time the pressure initially rose to 36.75 at and then dropped evenly to 26.6 at at the end. The reaction product obtained was a thin, aqueous, colloidal dispersion of tetrafluoroethylene-ethylene copolymer with 12.4% solids. The interpolymer contained 6o.5% fluorine, which is a molar ratio from tetrafluoroethylene to ethylene from i to o, gi corresponds. The polymeric particles were spherical and had a diameter of o, o5 to o, i, u. From this dispersion separated by precipitation, washed and dried polymer was on a Copper block softened at 26o to 27o ° and formed a colorless, viscous, stiff melt. The polymer could be hot pressed at about 300 ° into tough, pliable films. Strips from these films could be cold drawn.
Example VI 2 parts of the potassium salt of hexadecofluoronanoic acid, 2 parts of refined paraffin (melting point 56 to 58 °) as a stabilizer, 0.05 parts Potassium persulfate and distilled water for a total of 100 parts were in one Introduced pressure vessel with a volume capacity of 325 parts of water. The container was heated to 70 to 78 ° and evacuated until the water boiled. then Tetrafluoroethylene gas was fed to the reaction vessel up to a pressure of 4.2 at, keeping the vessel moving. When the tetrafluoroethylene absorbs and polymerized, the pressure dropped to 3.83 atm, whereupon the vessel again fell a pressure of 4.2 at was brought. This measure was carried out ten times in 5.4 hours repeated. Of the 84.6 parts of the polytetrafluoroethylene that formed were 97% as a colloidal aqueous dispersion with 49% solids content. The remaining 3% was coagulated and contained in the separate paraffin phase that was used on cooling the reaction mixture solidified and easily removed from the surface of the dispersion could be.
This example was repeated almost exactly with the exception that no paraffin and 50%, d. H. a total of 3 parts, more potassium salt of hexadecofluoronanoic acid were used. After a polymerization time of 3.6 hours, the dispersion contained 36% solids of which 84% was in the form of a colloidal dispersion and the Residual coagulated polymer. This comparative experiment shows the effectiveness the paraffin stabilizer, which largely prevents the coagulation of the polymer particles prevented.

The amount of dispersant is negligible and can be, for. B. between o, oi and 10 percent by weight, preferably between 0.1 and 3 percent by weight, based on the aqueous medium (water) used.
The stabilizer expediently consists of a single or one Mixture of different hydrocarbons with 24 to 6o carbon atoms and will z. B. in amounts of i to 5 percent by weight, based on the water in which the Polymer dispersion to be formed is used. These hydrocarbons include Eikosan, Tetrakosan, Tetrakontan, Hexakontan, White Oil and especially those below the polymerization temperature, e.g. B. normally under 100 °, melting paraffin waxes. They act as stabilizers in the polymerization process, i. H. prevent them or retard, or in other words, the formation of coagulated polymer increase the ratio of the polymer present as suspensoid to the coagulated polymer Polymers. The mechanism of stabilization brought about by the paraffinic hydrocarbons has not yet been finalized. It is known, however, that coagulation is more specific Polymeric, e.g. B. polytetrafluoroethylene and polytrifluorochloroethylene, autocatalytic goes on by rapidly increasing the rate of coagulation when the Coagulation has started once. It is also known that at the end of the polymerization all of the coagulate is formed from the water-insoluble hydrocarbon Oil phase is, provided that the coagulation does not have the absorption capacity the oil phase for the coagulate can rise. It is therefore believed that the hydrocarbon stabilizer foreign coagulation germs from premature, from any of the numerous possible causes caused coagulation, separates. The coagulate is thus removed from the dispersion, thereby promoting further coagulation is prevented.
B. Alkyl, Alkenyl, Cycloalkenyl, Aryl, Arylalkyl, Arylalkenyl, Halogenalkenyle, Cyan-, Carboxyl-, Carbalkoxyl-, Acyloxyl-, Aldehyd-, Keton-, Amido-, Imido-Äthergruppen od. dgl., bedeuten. The invention is broadly applicable to the polymerization of monomeric, unsaturated, organic compounds dissolved in an aqueous medium. Any monomeric, unsaturated, organic compound which is suitable for polymerization in aqueous media can be used; however, the invention is of particular value when applied to the polymerization of those monomers in which it is very difficult to obtain useful colloidal dispersions of the polymer by direct polymerization; Haloethylenes, preferably tetrafluoroethylene and trifluorochloroethylene, also belong here. The most important monomers from a technological point of view are generally compounds having a terminal carbon-carbon double bond represented by the general formula where A and B are hydrogen or halogen (fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine) and D and E are hydrogen, halogen, hydrocarbon radicals, e.g. B. alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkenyl, aryl, arylalkyl, arylalkenyl, haloalkenyls, cyano, carboxyl, carbalkoxyl, acyloxyl, aldehyde, ketone, amido, imido ether groups or the like.

In addition to the monomers mentioned in the examples, there are also called vinyl halides (vinyl fluoride, bromide, iodide), vinylidene halides, e.g. B. i, i-difluoroethylene, i, i-dichloroethylene, i, i-dichloro-2, 2-difluoroethylene, vinyl and vinylidene hydrocarbons, such as propylene, isobutylene, i, 3-butadiene, vinylcyclohexene, Vinylnaphthalene, propenylbenzene, i-phenyl-i, 3-butadiene, 2-phenyl-i, 3-butadiene, Halovinyl and halovinylidene hydrocarbons, e.g. B. 2-fluoro-i, 3-butadiene, 2, 3-dichloro-i, 3-butadiene, 2-iodo-i, 3-butadiene, acrylic and alkyl acrylic compounds, z. B. olefin, halo-olefin and alkyl olefin carboxylic acids, their esters, nitriles and amides, such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, a-chloroacrylic acid, ethyl acrylate, Methyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate, methoxymethyl methacrylate, Methacrylic acid chloroethyl ester, methacrylic acid β-diethylaminoethyl ester, methacrylic acid nitrile, Acrylic acid amide, methacrylic acid amide, carboxylic acid vinyl ester, e.g. B. vinyl formate, Vinyl chloroacetate, vinyl butyrate, vinyl laurate, unsaturated Aldehydes and ketones, such as acrolein, methylacrolein, methyl vinyl ketone, N-vinyl imides, z. Two or more monomers can form copolymers are polymerized at the same time.
The invention is particularly suitable for polymerization in aqueous Systems of fully halogenated ethylenes in which at least 2 of the 4 halogen atoms consist of fluorine and, if there are other halogen atoms in the molecule, these are then chlorine. These compounds (tetrafluoroethylene, trifluorochloroethylene, i, i-Difluoro-2, 2-dichloroethylene, i, 2-Difluoro-i, 2-dichloroethylene) are in aqueous dispersion polymerization systems particularly difficult to treat because the usual dispersants cause the polymerization break off when short polymer chains are reached, with the result that the reaction comes to a standstill even at very low polymer concentrations. on the other hand it is with the fluoroalkyl dispersants as they are in the process according to FIG Invention are used, easily possible, using fluoroethylene polymer dispersions to obtain a very high polymer concentration. Especially in the case of tetrafluoroethylene and trifluorochloroethylene, the dispersions obtained can not only be much higher more concentrated than ever before by direct polymerization of the Monomers in an aqueous medium was possible, but these are dispersions also very stable during storage and usually due to the fineness of the polymeric particles excellent, all of which have at least one dimension less than 0.13. The fineness of the polymer particles is particular to the tetrafluoroethylene polymer dispersions characteristic.
A particularly significant property of the according to the method of Invention produced tetrafluoroethylene dispersions is that a considerable Number of polymeric particles are distinctly elongated ribbon-like structures; she are apparently quite stiff since they have no noticeable tendency to curve although they often appear to be tortuous along their axes in photomicrographs. As can be seen from electron micrographs, these have ribbon-like particles a thickness in the range of about o, oi to o, o5, u and a width of less than about 0.07, u, while their length extends to 4, u and more, with the ratio from length to width at least 5: i and in some cases even 400: i or even is even more. The proportion of this band-like formed in the dispersion Particle varies considerably with the experimental conditions. Although these dispersions are very stable, especially with the more concentrated dispersions, observed that some or all of the ribbon-like particles upon standing for a long time can flocculate. However, they can be removed by simply shaking the dispersion Re-disperse as desired.
Er besaß eine Zugfestigkeit von 7oo kg/cm- bei einer Dehnung vor dem Reißen von 8o0/,.Polytetrafluoroethylene dispersions with at least 5 ° / a of polymeric particles with this ribbon-like shape can be pressed in strand form and coagulated, giving thread-like structures with a toughness before sintering of over 1.75 kg / cm '. The dispersions can be spun into threads. This was not possible with the previously known dispersions, since they do not form a thread with sufficient mechanical strength before sintering. To illustrate this, the polytetrafluoroethylene dispersion from Example I was spun from a spinneret with a diameter of about 0.25 mm below the surface of 0.5% aqueous hydrochloric acid. The precipitated, gelatinous thread was led out of the bath in air and thereby dried and then heated to 327 to 400 ° for a short time (1 second or even less). This time was needed to transform the thread that was initially translucent into a transparent one. The hot filament was rapidly cooled and then cold stretched to approximately four times its original length. A transparent thread with a round cross section and a diameter of 0.075 to 0.1 mm was obtained. This thread was highly oriented, as its X-ray diffraction pattern showed. It had a tensile strength of 700 kg / cm - with an elongation before rupture of 80%.
The new dispersions have many other industrial uses. So they are suitable for casting cohesive, flexible, strong films, which either as an independent film material or as coatings for wood, metal, Wire mesh, ceramics, textiles and the like can be used. The films can be poured so that the casting with an acid, such as. B. hydrochloric or sulfuric acid, which precipitates the dispersion, treated, or acid vapors can also be used for the casting, such as hydrogen chloride. Wire coatings with high quality properties are made easily by heating wires treated with the concentrated dispersions were obtained. Fibrous fabrics, including cotton, 'olle, silk, glass fabric, Asbestos, paper, etc. can be impregnated with the dispersions, whereupon these then by treatment with an acidic agent and / or by heating and / or or precipitated by drying processes.
