The invention relates to a separator for separating fats from water, preferably waste water, by flotation in a container permeated by water*
Industrial water, waste water from trades and industry is often contaminated with fats, e.g. oils. Before such water is fed into bodies of water, drainage ditches and thus into groundwater or sewage treatment plants, the fat and oil content must be largely removed. This is generally achieved by flotation: the waste water to be cleaned is led through a container in which the specifically lighter fats and oils float to the surface of the water and are to be removed from there. Larger fat droplets, fat flakes or the like can be separated relatively easily, quickly and completely; however, the finer a fat or oil droplet is, the less favorable its ratio of resistance to buoyancy becomes, so that in many cases finer fat and oil particles are not or only inadequately separated, or extremely large separators are required to ensure sufficient separation through long residence times.
The invention is based on the task of creating a separator which, despite limited dimensions, is able to largely clean relatively large water flows.

This is achieved in a separator of this type by the features defined in claim 1*. By dividing the container intended as a separator into individual chambers, long and particularly uniform throughput times are achieved even in relatively small containers, and the two-part design of the compartments made up of swell walls and partition walls means that sediments are retained in the individual separation chambers and the specifically lighter components are allowed to float to the surface. The type of connection by means of slots made at part of the height, which cause a downward flow when they pass over, further facilitates flotation and results in longer residence times for higher water components, which are in any case enriched from below by rising fats and oils, so that extensive separation takes place.
Expedient and advantageous developments of the invention are characterized in the subclaims.
The features of the invention are explained in detail using the description of an embodiment in conjunction with a drawing showing the same.
In the drawing, a vertical section along the central plane shows a container 1 which is closed at the bottom by a floor 2 sloping in the direction of flow and which is closed at the top but is accessible for cleaning and inspection purposes through dome shafts 3. In normal operation, these dome shafts are covered by conveniently walkable and drivable covers and are only opened for cleaning and inspection purposes. It has proven to be useful to design these dome shafts in two parts like a telescope so that different heights can be set and additional rough gradations can be achieved by different lengths of the dome shafts (not shown).

Water to be cleaned is fed into the tank via an inlet which is provided above the desired filling level 20. Firmly connected to the floor and the side walls are swell walls 5, 6 and 7 which reach into the tank from below and divide it, and which are engaged behind by partition walls 8, 9 and 10 which are set higher and extend at least to the upper edge of the swell walls. The partition walls 9 and 10 are provided behind the swell walls 6 and 7 in the flow direction and overlap them with, for example, 15% of their length, while the partition wall 8 is provided slightly in front of the swell wall 5, but is bent at part of its height in such a way that here too a gap is created which is directed essentially into the lower area of the next separation chamber.
The filling level 20 is determined by the lower edge of the outlet 11. A dip tube 12 is arranged in front of this outlet, the inlet opening of which is located so far below the filling level 20 that the discharged water is removed from the lower area and not close to the filling level 20; the inlet opening is protected against directly rising fat droplets by a baffle plate 13 arranged at a distance in front of it.
At the top, the upper, free leg of the immersion tube 12 is closed by a cover 14 through which a ventilation tube 15 passes, which extends to well below the filling level 20.
The subdivision creates a pre-separation chamber 16, two separation chambers 17 and 18 and a fine separator 19 within the tank, through which the wastewater passes one after the other.

In the subsequent separation chambers 17 and 18, through which the water flows, the water enters each time through the slot formed between the sill wall .; and the partition wall, directed downwards, |j and specifically lighter components float away upwards within the i flow. The opposing slots ? ensure a uniform flow in the main area. Components floating upwards from this end up in water areas with a lower speed and thus a longer residence time, so that the separation of fine components can also take place to the greatest extent possible. To avoid grease and oils, it is closed by a cover 14. Rising oils are prevented from entering the immersion tube 12 by the baffle plate 13, which diverts directly rising liquids or their components to the outside.
It has been shown to be important that although sediments are separated by settling, no special precautions are taken to remove settled sediments. In the case of normal contamination, an annual cleaning is sufficient, for example, which can be carried out through the dome shafts.
The partition walls are at different heights. The highest partition wall is 10 in order to safely shield the fine separator 19 from any grease separated in the pre-chambers. This means that only a thin layer of grease appears on the surface of the water in the fine separator, which comes from the last greases and oils separated. A particularly heavy accumulation of greases and oils occurs in the pre-separation chamber 16; as in the other chambers, the grease floating on the water is either continuously or temporarily removed. This can be achieved by providing drainage channels 21, 22 on the side walls of the container 1 in such a way that the lower edges of their inlet openings or the tops of the drainage channels are just on the filling level 20. This ensures that normal water cannot overflow, but separated greases and oils can. These inlet edges of the extraction channels can also be set slightly higher than the filling level 20, since the fats and oils are specifically lighter than water and, if they accumulate, they will therefore exceed the filling level 20 determined by the water. It is also possible to extract separated fats or oils through outlets of downward-facing drainage pipes or upward-facing suction pipes slightly above the filling level 20 or, if necessary, to degrade the fats biologically or chemically.

The two separation chambers 17 and 18 are separated from each other by the partition wall 9, but the oils and fats are removed together. Therefore, the upper edge of the partition wall 9 is only extended to the filling level 20 or only slightly exceeds it. This prevents water from overflowing from the separation chamber 17 into the separation chamber 18, but fat and oil layers that exceed the filling level 20 form together and can therefore also be removed together.
The separator designed according to the invention is characterized by a relatively high separation efficiency of, for example, 99.95% at the target throughput. It can also be built relatively small and compact; for example, the container shown can be designed with a maximum height of 1 m, a length of 1.5 m and a width of 0.8 m. The advantage here is that it can be easily accommodated, as well as the economical use of materials and labor achieved through the small size. The advantage in any case is the high separation efficiency, which is so far above the required DIN values that there is no risk of them being undercut even under extreme loads.
