Description
Process for reducing the tonal range in optical copying The present invention is based on the object of hard or at least very high-contrast photographic negatives to produce softer, more harmonious images. So far one has mostly tried to accomplish this task by choosing an allegedly suitable one Loosen paper ziz. Apart from the time-consuming inconvenience and inaccuracy this only makeshift compensation is actually working wrongly with it. Conditional This is because the shape of the gradation curves of photographic layers results It is known that with negative emulsions due to the flat increase in the blackening curve In the shadows a flattening of the tonal values occurs. Is one used to this To correct errors in the shadows, use harder paper for copying or enlarging than corresponds to the copy range of the negative, the shadow error is compensated for can be, but the midtones, which the negative itself reproduces correctly, will be too hard because they lie on the straight part of the gradation curve. In addition, you couldn't use the entire pitch range of the negative on this harder one Put in paper, either lights or shadows would be cut off. A softer paper, however, would not be able to compensate for the errors in the shadows, would therefore also be unsuitable.
In contrast, the invention relates to a method which is soft It is permitted to produce photographic images from hard negatives by adding the to slight slope of the blackening curve iri made the shadow correspondingly steeper becomes without the gradients corresponding to the midtones or the highlights can also be increased. According to the invention, this does not happen with chemical agents, but in a purely optical way, namely by using a paper with a hard-working positive layer is used, but the copy exposure is superimposed by a diffuse lighting will. This invention provides for a harder paper gradation when copying or Enlargement is used than corresponds to the copy size of the negative, and that either before, during or after the actual exposure due to egä £ iväem oprer15apier, independent of the negative, additional diffuse lighting that can be dosed is granted.
.The dosed, additional diffuse lighting has the consequence that the image shadows caused by the bright negative at these points is well known get a lot of light, get less now, however- the midtones and the Lights that are correspondingly less light due to the darker negative in these areas get, more influenced in their blackness steepness. The shadow areas are thus made only a little softer by the diffuse additional exposure, while the midtones and highlights are considerably softer than they are in the normal simple one Exposure only through the negative would. The use of a harder copy paper on the other hand, has the effect that in the end the rise in the shadow areas becomes steeper, so it gets harder while the midtones and highlights are just playing normally because the greater softness of these areas as a result of the additional lighting is compensated by the steeper gradation of the paper. .
It is known that a negative gives the smoother enlargements, the more diffuse it is illuminated; of which is inserted in the case of enlargers of frosted glass, etc. between the light source and the negative is common made. However, large changes in contrast cannot be achieved here; because that only results in a softening of the light source, for example as with opal lamps. The changes make about a degree of hardness differentiated according to the usual degrees of hardness Papers out.
In contrast, the present invention permits larger intervals in the sense of a reduction in hardness by bridging them in addition to the optical Imaging on the layer an additional light, the entire image area applies substantially uniformly accurate exposure. This amount of light will so dimensioned that it is noticeably smaller than the one in the shadows of the picture, that is effective amount of light in the clear areas of the negative. On the gradation of the shadow areas it then has practically no influence. On the other hand, it does at least the same Amount of exposure in the lights off. Exceeds the total available exposure then the threshold, which is quite high for hard-working shifts, and delivers harmonious, clearly drawn lights instead of chalky whites.
Using this method according to the invention, one thus obtains a photographic positive image from any photographic negative, that reproduces the midtones and highlights normally, but the ones in the shadows separates individual pitches better and thus more appropriately to nature, than is possible with normal enlarging or copying. It also becomes a bigger one Power in the shadows and thus an increase in the image effect achieved.
