Description
Process for the production of aluminum formate According to literature if aluminum chloride is treated with formic acid, a white, deliquescent, strongly acidic powder for which the formula Al (H C O O) 2 Cl - H C O O H 2 '/ 2H20 is specified.
It has now been found that a largely chlorine-free, non-hygroscopic Aluminum formate is obtained, the composition of which roughly corresponds to the formula Al (H C O O) 3 - H C O O H corresponds to when one adds excess formic acid to aluminum chloride at a temperature of at least 70 °. Appropriately one goes from one Formic acid, the concentration of which is between 75 and 100%, because when used formic acid of lower concentration is slightly basic or chlorine-containing, deliquescent Products are created. It is advantageous to proceed in such a way that the aluminum chloride is on best in the anhydrous sublimated form, slowly stirring into a large one Introduces excess formic acid preheated to at least 70 °. At lower At high temperature, slightly basic, insoluble aluminum formates are formed. Under strong The chlorine-free aluminum formate deviates from the stated composition with heat development while the hydrogen chloride released from the aluminum chloride escapes and can be caught in water. The liquid falls as a result of the heat generation to the boil. The formic acid which distills off can be removed by means of a reflux condenser can easily be separated from the hydrochloric acid which is also distilling off. The implementation can be completed by heating with stirring. That from The aluminum formate separated from the liquid forms a colorless, fine-grained, non-hygroscopic, chlorine-free or low-chlorine mass, which are particularly easily dissolves in water when heated and has a total formic acid content from about 85 to 88%. The mother liquor, the only insignificant amounts Contains aluminum salt can be used immediately for a new conversion.
The hydrochloric acid formed in the process can be used for any purpose be used. It is advantageous to catch them in water and optionally formic acid Formamide, because here by saponification of the formamide formic acid and next to it Ammonium chloride is formed. After separating the ammonium chloride, e.g. B. by narrowing or by cooling the solution, the formic acid can be used for aluminum format production can be used by yourself.
It is particularly useful to put the formamide directly into the reaction vessel to be entered; it then already penetrates during the formation of the aluminum format the hydrochloric acid released causes saponification of the formamide. Through this way of working it succeeds in the decomposition of the formic acid, which begins at the prevailing high temperature to be avoided in carbon monoxide and water. The conversion product consists in this Case from the desired aluminum formate and a solution of ammonium chloride in Formic acid. The solution can be based on solid ammonium chloride and formic acid, that is fed back into the procedure.
Since in the formation of the aluminum formate ie moles of the desired salt 4 moles of formic acid are required, while only 3 moles per mole of aluminum chloride If formic acid is obtained, the required fourth mole of formic acid can be added by adding of 1 mole of hydrogen chloride and a further mole of formamide during, before or after the main reaction.
Example i In a vessel equipped with a stirrer and reflux condenser, in which there are 100 parts of 95% formic acid, which is preheated to about 70 ° is, 135 parts of anhydrous aluminum chloride are slowly introduced with stirring. The resulting hydrogen chloride is converted into formamide, which contains around 20% water, caught; the temperature rises to about 10 °. It's all aluminum chloride entered, stirring is continued for about an hour at 100 to 105 °, then to about 8o 'cooled and the precipitated salt filtered off and dried. You get about zoo parts of a salt with a content of about 86% formic acid, 24.5% aluminum (calculated as A120 ..) and 0.8% chlorine. Example e In one with stirrer and reflux condenser A provided vessel, in which there are 100 parts 80% formic acid, is given 135 parts of formamide and then heated the mixture to about 100 °. Then be slow 135 parts of anhydrous aluminum chloride entered. This causes the liquid to become cloudy immediately by precipitating aluminum formate, and the temperature rises to about i 15 0. After all the aluminum chloride has been entered, about i hour Stirred further at 100 to 105 °, cooled to about 80 ° and the salt that has separated out filtered off and washed with hot concentrated formic acid. One receives after drying about zoo parts of aluminum formate with a content of about 87.5% formic acid, 25.1% aluminum, calculated as Al 2039 and 0.3% chlorine. The filtrate and the washing liquid are evaporated; one obtains about 150 parts of ammonium chloride with one Content of about 99% N H4 C1 and concentrated formic acid necessary for a new implementation is used.
