Description
Extraction of nitrogen oxides from gas mixtures The absorption of nitrogen oxides, as they are obtained, for example, by catalytic oxidation of ammonia, with water for the purpose of obtaining nitric acid takes place all the more slowly and imperfectly, the lower the concentration and the degree of oxidation of the nitrogen oxides. Consequently in the technical processing of such gases become that of absorption with water lost, highly diluted components of nitrogen oxides usually with an alkaline Solution absorbed. A significant portion of the nitrogen processed is therefore not in the form of nitric acid, but as nitrate or. Nitrite solution obtained. However, there is often no adequate market for these salts or their extraction can be found elsewhere or using cheaper raw materials, e.g. B. sodium chloride; be carried out more economically. So z. B. with the usual alkaline Absorption of the residual gases with soda solution the absorption system in the case of: a higher The need for nitric acid is not without its disadvantage that it is more heavily burdened and better utilized as a proportion of the Nitric oxide is obtained as sodium nitrite and as sodium nitrate.
To avoid the undesired accumulation of sodium nitrate one has suggested to use calcium hydroxide instead of solo solution for the absorption of the Use tail gases. Even in this case, however, an inevitable link remains the production of nitric acid with the production of nitrate, here Calcium nitrate, exist. There is also the risk of the absorption towers becoming blocked Lime or based on calcium nitrite. Also has the low concentration of the extracted Calcium nitrate solution results in increased energy costs for water evaporation. at Use of Animoniakwasser for the absorption of the residual gases arise as a result the volatility of ammonia and due to the easy decomposition of the resulting Ammonium nitrites nitrogen losses. In addition, corrosion damage occurs to the devices by entrained ammonium salt.
Fig. i).The present procedure now provides a way to - \ - avoid this Disadvantages. It consists in the fact that the alkaline absorption solution Stickozvde by adding full nitric acid drives out and the remaining liquid through Electrolysis decomposed into an alkaline solution and into an acidic solution, whereupon the the former is used for the absorption of further quantities of nitrosec gases, while the acidic solution serves to drive off the nitrogen oxides from the absorption solution. The method can be carried out as follows (see FIG. I).
The gas mixture containing nitrogen oxides to be processed is passed into an absorption tower fl in which there is an aqueous solution of alkali hydrolide and alkali nitrate. The solution is practically completely neutralized in your tower by absorbing the stickotvde with the formation of full nitrite and nitrate. After absorption, the solution is fed to a container B, preferably designed as a tower, in which the nitrite formed is finite nitric acid in the sense of equation 2 Na N0. = + 2H \ O, -2 N a N 0, + \ .03+ H., 0 is decomposed. The nitrate solution flowing out of the container is fed into an electrolytic cell C. There the solution is broken down into an alkaline part at the cathode and an acid part at the anode. The first part, which contains free: @lkalilivdrotyd, is returned to the absorption urine and in turn serves to absorb nitrogen oxides. The second part, which contains free nitric acid. serves again to expel the nitrogen oxides from the nitrite-nitrate solution leaving the absorption cycle. There is thus a closed cycle. This achieves the following essential advantages: The inevitable generation of nitrate is avoided and the corresponding consumption of old alkalis is saved. The corresponding amount of nitrogen is also generated more than nitric acid. The alkaline-bound nitrogen oxides' earths were restored in a highly concentrated form and with a good degree of oxidation. They can either serve to increase the concentration of the nitric acid produced or be used directly for the production of highly concentrated nitric acid. The absorption capacity of the alkaline solution is considerably better than that of social solution or milk of lime, as it contains alkali hydroxide. As a result, the nitrogen losses in the inert gas are lower, the operation becomes more independent of the fluctuations in the outside temperature, it can withstand a higher load.
Since nian in contrast to the technically applied nitrate profitable by reacting the nitrite-nitrate solution with nitric acid (inversion) in the the present process does not have to work towards a solution that is as nitrite-free as possible, is a special blowing out of the solution by means of air to expel the nitrous Acid not required. As a result, the nitric oxides that are released do not become strongly diluted with air, but as almost pure, highly concentrated nitrogen trioxide (Nitric oxide (1 -, - nitrogen dioxide) obtained.
For electrolysis, those known from chlor-alkali electrolysis can be used Cell constructions are used. To a mixture of the arising in the cell To prevent alkaline and acidic solutions, one can introduce the solution into the middle of the cell and to the two sides of the electrode through diaphragms to distribute. However, other types of arrangements without diapositioning can also be used.
When classifying electrolysis in the closed circuit The solutions in the sense described above still have a particular advantage. the The main difficulty in achieving good current yields in the electrolysis of neutral salts obtained, is known to be the fact that the 0 H - ions of the resulting alkali or, the H + ions of the resulting acid become stronger with increasing concentration participate in the power line and thus cause power losses. Against it is Almost quantitative yield. if you are concerned with achieving low lye or Can be satisfied with acid concentrations. This is the case in the present proceedings given. because, in contrast to the technical chlor-alkali electrolysis, it does not the achievement of solutions with eiridanil) worthy concentrations is important.
The one that is bound not as nitrite but as nitrate during absorption insignificant portion of the nitrogen oxides is generated with the action of the nitric acid those on the absorption coming solution not expelled. at However, this circumstance does not lead to an enrichment in the present process of nitrate and thus the need to evaporate part of the solution and crystallization to process solid nitrate. Under the action of the cathodic Rather, the hydrogen evolved is partially reduced by nitrate Nitrite instead, the extent of which can be influenced in a known manner by choosing the cathode material is. In this way, the nitrate produced in the absorption tower is retained in the cell converted into nitrite, and the equivalent amount of nitrogen oxides can now with the Implementation with nitric acid can also be driven out, so that the in the cycle the amount of nitrogen present remains unchanged.
It is not absolutely necessary to use all of the solution obtained in the reaction of the absorption solution with nitric acid. to feed electrolytic cells. Rather, part of the nitrate can also be processed and this separated. In this case, alkalis, such as soda, are added to the absorption solution, and nitric acid is added when the solution coming from the absorption is reacted with the acidic cell solution. At the same time, only a lower power requirement is required. However, this method of operation is generally only used to the extent necessary to keep the nitrate production just at the desired level. EXAMPLE A residual gas of nitrogen and oxygen obtained from the acidic absorption of ammonia combustion gases with a content of about 10 fo nitrogen oxides was treated in an absorption tower A with a solution I obtained by electrolysis of sodium nitrate solution, which contained 24 g of sodium hydroxide, 6.9 g per liter Sodium nitrite and 214 g sodium nitrate. During the absorption, the solution took up 8.4z kg of nitrogen per cubic meter in the form of nitrogen oxides until it was neutralized. After absorption, the solution contained 4.1 g sodium nitrite and 219.1 g sodium nitrate per liter.
This solution was mixed with a solution II containing 36.5 g of nitric acid and contained 236 g of sodium nitrate, combined and passed through a tower B. here the sodium nitrite decomposed under the action of nitric acid, whereby Nitrogen sesquioxide was released and recovered in concentrated form. By a small addition of nitric acid completed the decomposition of the sodium nitrite. In addition to traces of nitrous acid, the solution then only contained sodium nitrate, namely 254.7 g per liter, and in addition a small excess of nitric acid of o, i g in 100 cc.
The solution was then passed into a device of the type shown in FIG. 2 for electrolysis. In the middle of each cell Cl, C2 . . . Cx the solution flows through L1, L2 . . . Lx and then flows to the right and left through two diaphnagment sheets D1, D2 ... Dx. The solutions that run off with an alkaline reaction on the cathode sides of the cells and the solutions that run off with an acidic reaction on the anode sides are collected separately from one another in two collecting channels Ra and Rs. The solution throughput per m2 cell cross-section was 251 per hour. Magnetite plates served as electrodes. A current density of 407 arp. applied per m2 with a voltage of 3.7 volts per cell. Under these conditions the current yield of sodium hydroxide solution and nitric acid obtained was 93 %. The solutions draining from the cells had the same compositions and concentrations as the solutions I and 1I, which were assumed. The solutions were again fed to the absorption and nitrite decomposition and thus repeatedly used in the cycle.
