Description
The invention relates to a connector which is mounted vertically on a circuit board and contains an electrical filter.
A known connector described in US-A-4,684,200 has a conductive shield surrounding an insulating body, a conductive contact surrounded by the insulating body, a mounting terminal on the contact, a ground surrounding the shield, and mounting pins projecting from the ground. A mating portion of the shield projects from the ground. The mating portion is for mating with an electrical connector connected to an electrical cable. The terminal and mounting pins are for connection to a circuit board. The mounting pins connect the ground of the connector to a conductive ground track of the circuit board. One of the disadvantages of the known connector is that radio frequency interference, RFI, can induce a voltage in a signal contact of the connector.
A connector described in US-A-5,062,8111 includes a conductive shell, capacitor elements facing the shell, and a conductive clip connecting the capacitor elements and extending to mounting pins projecting from a housing surrounding the shell. RFI-induced voltages are conducted through the capacitor elements to a ground path of a circuit board to which the mounting pins are connected. The goal is to shorten the conductive path between the capacitor elements and the circuit board ground path, thereby reducing the electrical resistance in the To reduce the circuit board path and to shorten the transmission time of the induced voltages to the circuit board.
The present invention consists in an electrical connector with a conductive contact connected to a mounting terminal of a circuit board, with an insulating body surrounding the contact, with a conductive shield surrounding the insulating body, with a conductive base surrounding the shield and with conductive circuit board mounting pins arranged on the base, characterized in that the electrical contact between the shield and the base is created by an electrical capacitor element arranged therebetween.
Insulating material may be arranged between the shield and the base, wherein the capacitor element is arranged in the form of a ring with the shield and the base between components made of insulating material in electrical connection, wherein the components may be ring components arranged between the shield and the base.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the connector shown in Fig. 4.
According to Fig. 1, a coaxial electrical connector 1 includes a hollow conductive shield 2 surrounding an insulating body 3 consisting of a first cylindrical portion 4 and a second cylindrical portion 5 which enclose a conductive electrical contact 6 concentric with the shield 2. The axis of the connector 1 is the concentric axis of the shield 2 and the contact 6. An upper plug end 7 of the shield 2 forms a coupling for a plug connection with another complementary connector, not shown. An electrical socket portion 8 of the contact 6 is provided for a plug connection with the complementary connector, not shown. The contact 6 has a radial flange 9 against which the portions 4, 5 of the insulating body 3 are leaned. The shield 2 carries an inner lip 10 against which the portion 4 abuts to prevent movement of the insulating body 3 relative to the shield 2. A peripheral edge of the shield is provided radially inwardly at various points to form projections 10a which overlap the portion 5 to prevent movement of the insulating body 3.
A broad base 11 surrounds a bottom 12 of the shield 2. The base 11 is conductive. Conductive board mounting pins 13 extend across a mounting surface 14 of the base 11 and are mated with compliant portions 15 to be connected to a circuit board, not shown. The pins 13 are connected to the base 11 via enlarged heads 16. Other fasteners 13' (Figs. 3 to 5) mechanically secure the base 11 to the board, not shown. A conductive electrical terminal 17 of the board mounting contact 6 has a compliant portion 15 and extends across the mounting surface 14 to be connected to a board, not shown. Further details of the connector 1 are described in US-A-4,684,200.
According to Fig. 2, the bottom 12 of the shield 2 has a stepped outer shape with an annular groove 18 recessed in the outer wall, an enlarged diameter portion 19 presenting an outer circular flange 20 immediately adjacent the groove 18 and a beveled frusto-conical end 21. The base 11 has a stepped inner passage 22 surrounding the stepped outer shape of the shield 2. Insulating material 23 in the form of a first ring 24, which may be constructed from two segments joined together, is retained in the groove 18, Fig. 3. A second ring 25 is a separate cylindrical part mounted around and on the bottom 12 or is a part molded directly around and on the bottom 12. A semiconductor capacitor element 26 comprising a relatively thin disk made of a material such as barium titinate surrounds the shield 2 and is arranged against the flange 20. The base 11 is brought over the shield, Fig. 3, until the Element 26 is flush against an inner transverse surface 27 of the shield which extends transversely to the axis of the coaxial connector 1. An electrical capacitor is created by intimate contact of element 26 between the shield 2 and the base 11. When a voltage is induced across the shield 2 by RFI, the voltage is passed across the element 26, through the base 11, through the pins 13 and into a ground plane of a circuit board (not shown) to which the pins 13 are connected, thereby advantageously protecting the contact 6 from RFI.
Das isolierende Material 23 umschließt das Element 26.To ensure close contact, the base 11 has a thin rim 28 which is formed radially inwardly towards the frustoconical portion 21 of the shield 2 to give a frustoconical shape. The ring 25 is also radially deformed to conform to the shape of the portion 21. A clearance surrounds the rim 28 to allow the reception of a molding tool (not shown) against the rim 28. The rim 28 is deformed radially and, due to the frustoconical shape, in the axial direction. The rim 28, when axially deformed, urges the shield 2 axially against the element 26 and urges both axially towards the transverse surface 27, clamping the element 26 between the shield 2 and the base 11 and creating the close contact. The element 26 is located in a relatively narrow space or clearance between the shield 2 and the base 11. To ensure that the shield 2 is insulated from the base 11, the insulating material of the insulating material 23 fills relatively large radial spaces or areas between the shield 2 and the base 11. The insulating material 23 encloses the element 26.
