Process for making drying oils The invention relates to US Pat
Manufacture of drying oils in addition to asphalt-like products from the
Sulfuric acid cleaning of mineral and tar oils accumulating sulfonic acids.
In the cleaning-Ung of mineral and tar oils by means of concentrated sulfuric acid, it is possible to obtain valuable sulfonic acids instead of the worthless and troublesome acid resins and acid tars, if not essential über'5o 'C works with substantial surpluses acid and temperatures.
The exact composition of these stilfonic acids is not yet known. It can only be said that these are mixtures of sulphonic acids, since they can be converted into products of a phenol-like character by alkali melting, and the solutions which melt alkali develop sulphurous acid when acidified. It has now been found that drying oils are obtained from this if the sulfonic acids obtained are first dissolved in a little water, neutralized with soda and the solution of sulfonic acid sodium - of course you can; also use other alkali or alkaline earth metal salts of these sulfonic acids - evaporated to dryness and - the sulfonic acid salts obtained in this way are dry-distilled. In addition to water, gases smelling of hydrogen sulfide and sulphurous acid, there is plenty of oil in the receiver, which after it has been freed of the odorous components by washing with soda and of the asphalt-like components by distillation, the valuable Has the property of absorbing and drying oxygen.

in bekannter Weise in
Teärölen verwendet werden, kann.EXAMPLE If 100 kgi of the sodium salt of the sulfonic acids, which are obtained when mineral or tar oils are treated with concentrated sulfuric acid in considerable excess, at temperatures not significantly above 50 ° C. , in a retort with an attached cooler and receiver, then decomposes salt under carbonization and formation of a liquid distillate, consisting of about 25 kg braunein oil and io kg of water, as well as by little to inorganic sulfur compounds - hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide - smelling gases. The oil has the property of drying in the air, even if it is repeatedly subjected to vacuum distillation. The first distillation leaves an asphalt-like, dark brown residue. % The residue in the retort consists essentially of carbon and sodium sulfide. If carbonic acid and water vapor are passed over this residue, soda and hydrogen sulfide are formed from the sodium sulfide. After leaching with water, the soda can be used to neutralize further quantities of stilfonic acids. The hydrogen sulphide can be burned to form sulphurous acid and this can be converted in a known manner into sulfuric acid, which in turn can be used again for the preparation of sulphonic acids or for the purification of mineral or tea oils.
