Procedure for measuring hydrogen ion concentration using
of electrodes made of antimony, tungsten or others that can be oxidized by dissolved oxygen
Metals or their alloys According to the previous view, the antimony electrode is
an electrode of the second kind, in which because of the constancy of the solubility product
of the antimony trioxide (SbE03) the antimony ion concentration that is responsible for the potential
is determining from the hydroxyl or. Hydrogen ion concentration of the electrode
surrounding solution depends. Danut should in a solution saturated with Sb_Os that
The potential of an immersed antimony electrode depends solely on the pN- @ Vert.
benutzt. It has now been found that the potential is also very substantial
the amount of oxygen which oxidizes on the electrode surface in the unit of time
acts, depends. It was z. B. observed that even with abundant presence
of solid Sb = Og the potential that a bare antimony rod in an air-saturated
Solution shows changes by larger amounts when the dissolved oxygen is removed,
z. B. by passing nitrogen through for a longer period of time. In contrast, the potential changes
in the opposite direction if pure oxygen is used instead of air for saturation
used.
On the other hand, the antimony electrode is not a reversible oxygen electrode,
whose potential depends solely on the partial pressure of oxygen, such as the platinized
Platinum hydrogen electrode reversible for hydrogen, because the potential
even at constant oxygen partial pressure under the influence of changes in the
formed by the oxygen and z. T. the electrode gradually covering oxidation products
of antimony changes.
It was found that on the surface of the antimony electrode
In the course of prolonged use, a reaction product settles which the electrode pretty much
quickly makes it unusable, by making the potentials it indicates with those that are bare
Electrodes no longer match. After scrubbing off this reaction product
the electrode shows the original potential again, if you make sure that
the antimony oxidation products in solution also have the same concentration
as before.
Oberfläche schon in kurzer.
So it was found that i. the conditions at the antimony electrode
of those of the known electrodes of the second kind by changing the potential values
distinguish, which is the gradual covering of the surface of the metal with reaction products
causes a. the antimony electrode is not like a reversible oxygen electrode
works at which the oxygen partial pressure alone is decisive for the potential
but that it depends on the rate of diffusion of oxygen to the electrode surface
arrives.
In itself it is known. Reaction products on the electrode surface
to be removed by sanding before the measurement. But this procedure is in the case
the antimony electrode is still insufficient and therefore not recommended because the
Surface in a short time. Time covered with reaction products. 'It was now
found that a permanent abrasion of the electrode by suitable means leads to a
constant potential. It was not that one would reach one's goal in this way
without further ado; because in general there is movement in potential measurements
of the electrodes are very disturbing and just cause an inconsistency of the potentials.
Fig. i.
In
An embodiment of the method according to the invention based on the above findings, which is intended for continuous measurements, is illustrated in FIG. The solution to be measured drips continuously from tube A into vessel B, where it is mixed with the appropriate gas. flowing in from the pipe G is flushed through. The solution enters the actual electrode E through the tube D. The rod-shaped antimony electrode F, which is cemented into a glass tube G through which the current-conducting wire H leads, is arranged centrally in this. The electrode is set in constant rotation by a motor. The antimony electrode is ring-shaped by a tightly fitting brush that is attached to the wall of the electrode vessel. After the solution has passed the electrode, it flows off through the overflow L. i17 is a porous clay pen that is attached to E by means of a rubber connection and provides the conductive connection to the other half-element of the electrode chain. Instead of the brush, z. B. the electrode vessel E can be filled with sand, which keeps the rotating electrode permanently bare. Another exemplary embodiment is shown in longitudinal section in FIG. 2. The solution to be measured flows in the open air in an inclined, open channel A over a point in the channel in which a piece of antimony metal B is inserted as an electrode. This is always rubbed off by a rapidly rotating brush roller G, the bristles ensuring constant air saturation of the liquid in the vicinity of the electrode through the formation of bubbles and foam.
B. Rhenium,
zu berücksichtigen sind.It has been shown that these new points of view also apply to potential formation
the hydrogen ions on tungsten and other oxidizable metals, e.g. B. rhenium,
must be taken into account.
