Description
As a protective device against leakage of the electrolyte from the primary and secondary elements Open tubes were proposed at both ends, which, the tightly closing Penetrating the cover of the element, ended at such a height above the normal level of the electrolyte that they also protrude above the current mirror when the element is reversed. This device fails when the element is shaken, in that liquid enters the pipe end located inside the element and can then flow out of the electrolyte. One is also more effective known device, which consists of a protective space attached to the cover, whose ceiling is formed by the vessel lid and its lower openings in the same height as that of the above-mentioned Röh-
These and similar, also fastened to the side walls of the element shelters have the disadvantage that they displace a portion of the electrolyte at the opposite or lateral position of the element and therefore an Ver: enlargement of the free space condition in the element. Attempts have been made to avoid this disadvantage by arranging a spherical protective space which is perforated on its lower side and which is supported by a tube penetrating the side wall of the vessel. Since the tube ended at the perimeter of the shelter, the electrolyte that got into the cavity when shaken could flow out through the tube unhindered. The arrangement was then improved by letting the tube carrying the spherical protective space and now penetrating the vessel lid end approximately in the middle of the protective space, but several openings were made in the wall of the protective space, one of which in certain positions of the element below the liquid level and so in these layers the electrolyte can flow into the protective space, from which it then, for. B. by shaking, from the pipe carrying the shelter can get to the outside.
Bei dieser Schutzvorrichtung können daher nur durch Schütteln des Elementes kleine Mengen Flüssigkeit durch die Löcher des Hohlkörpers in dessen Inneres dringen, ohne aber in die untere Öffnung des Rohres zu gelangen, und sie fließen rasch aus dem Schutzraum wiederAll disadvantages of the device mentioned are avoided by the invention the union of a hollow body arranged inside the element, which from one that extends to about its middle and is open on both sides, the lid or one Side wall of the element penetrating tube is supported, and such an arrangement of the openings provided in this hollow body, so that none of the openings in any element layer is below the electrolyte level is. This protective device can therefore only be shaken of the element penetrate small amounts of liquid through the holes of the hollow body in its interior, but without the lower opening of the tube, and they quickly flow out of the shelter again

Because the hollow body is carried by a relatively thin tube, it displaces only a relatively small amount of the electrolyte when the element is inverted or on the side, and the free space in the element therefore only needs to be small. In order to make the best possible use of the electrolyte-free space of the element in every position, it is advisable to give the protective space a shape that is similar to the element space above the plates, i.e. that of a right-angled parallelepiped. Furthermore, it is advisable to arrange the walls of the shelter not completely parallel, but slightly inclined to the vessel walls and to relocate the openings of the shelter to the lowest corners of the shelter for each possible position of the element. Of course, even if less favorable, the shelter can have other shapes and perforations, e.g. B. be designed as a hollow ball made of continuously perforated sheet metal. Instead g of the 2 EIe- management cover the protective area of the element can be fastened according to the invention in the same manner at the upper part of a side wall.
