Description
Process for the oxidation of hydrogen sulfide contained in gases to sulfur. In the German patent specification 303 862 and its additives, a process for the production of sulfur from hydrogen sulfide or gases containing hydrogen sulfide is described, which consists in that the gas mixed with the required amount of air or oxygen, optionally in the presence of basic bodies without external heat supply allows porous charcoal, such as animal charcoal or charcoal, to act.
When applying this process to technical gases such as generator gas, Coke oven gas, it has been shown that the intensity of the reaction process in gases with the same hydrogen sulfide content fluctuates very strongly. While * for some Gaseous layers of coal a few centimeters high are sufficient to remove hydrogen sulfide completely To be liberated, others with the same hydrogen sulphide content require meter-high layers of coal required to achieve the same degree of cleaning.
It has now been found that the water vapor content of the gas on the The course of the reaction is of great influence. The oxidation of hydrogen sulfide proceeds best, when the gas in the reaction contains so much water vapor that it is close to the dew point is. This goal can be achieved in a number of ways, e.g. B. by washing the gas with water, by injecting water or blowing steam into it; this can also be done with gases with a relatively low water content Increase cooling of the reaction carrier. Likewise, the charcoal can be so strongly moistened that the gas at the reaction point is the amount necessary for its moisture penetration Finds water. In the latter case, the heat of reaction is used to evaporate the on the reaction carrier, e.g. B. the active charcoal, adhering water and used this lowers the reaction temperature, so that the water vapor content of the gas remains relatively high in the reaction zone. It may be useful to to combine both working methods, d. H. to work with wet coal and to cool the reaction carrier.
If you work in the prescribed manner, you will succeed in the reaction zone to be shortened so that the gases are still completely desulfurized even then, if you lead them through low layers of coal at great speed. It Then there is still a sulfur enrichment in the coal of more than 100 percent achieved their own weight. The coal is therefore largely used, and one gets by with small equipment and with low layers of coal, so that the power requirement for gas production is also very low. Used Instead of active charcoal, other large-surface bodies such as silica gel are used or aluminum oxides, a shortening of the reaction zone is also achieved, if care is taken that the water vapor content of the gas in the reaction zone is high that the dew point has almost been reached.
Folgende Beispiele mögen zur weiteren Kennzeichnung des Verfahrens dienen: Beispiel i.The following examples may further characterize the process serve: example i.
Illuminating gas with a hydrogen sulfide content of around 10 g in one Cubic meter is driven at a speed of 50 mm per second by an i m high layer of active charcoal, which is kept at ao ° by a cooling system will. Hydrogen sulphide occurs in exhaust gases when the coal is 90 percent of its own Weight is saturated with sulfur, while when working without cooling it is already at a sulfur content of the coal of 6o percent of the hydrogen sulfide in the exiting Luminous gas can be detected.
Beispiel z.Example
The same gas as used in example i is passed through a layer of active carbon which contains about 50 percent of its weight in water. The reaction then takes place at a temperature of about 30 ° and the carbon is saturated with sulfur to iao percent of its weight if hydrogen sulfide appears at the end of the carbon filter. If you work with a coal that has only 5 percent water, the coal is only 60 percent saturated when the hydrogen sulfide first appears in the exhaust gas.
Beisp.iel3. Example 3. Luminous gas of the same composition as in the above examples was used, is heated to 100 ° and through a layer active charcoal, which gradually assumes the same temperature. Before the When entering the coal layer, water vapor is added to the gases. The first If hydrogen sulfide occurs in the exhaust gas, the coal is 70 percent of its weight saturated with sulfur; if you work without adding steam, it contains only 5 percent Sulfur.
