in Platingefäßen erfolgen müßte.Extraction of hafnium. It is desirable as a starting product for
the extraction of hafnium generally includes the relatively cheap zirconium ores
to be able to use only 1 to 2 percent hafnium content. Here, however, there is the difficulty
that the resulting from the fractionation of the alkali double fluorides, very considerable
hafnium-containing waste liquors have to be dealt with. A precipitation with ammonia and
Phosphoric acid does not work. Precipitation with sodium hydroxide results in a hydroxide that is considerable
is more difficult to process further than the double fluoride. A gain of the
Hafnium from the waste liquor by evaporation would be uneconomical, especially since this operation
would have to take place in platinum vessels.
B. Methyl-
oder Äthylalkohol.According to the invention, these difficulties are addressed to the following
Way avoided. The hafnium is obtained from an alkali double fluoride
of the hafnium-containing zircon, which is produced in a known manner by digesting the ore
with potassium bifluoride, with another alkali fluoride or by dissolving zirconium dioxide
can be obtained in hydrofluoric acid and the addition of potassium bifluoride. The double fluoride solution
subject to fractional crystallization. This procedure is very similar
the one previously used to separate tantalum and niobium. The waste liquors containing hafnium
are now treated with such a precipitant that that is in the solution
Double fluoride precipitates as such. Such a precipitant is, for. B. methyl
or ethyl alcohol.
To recover what remains in the waste liquor after the alcohol has been precipitated
Remaining hafnium becomes the solution, which still has a certain amount of free hydrofluoric acid
must contain, mixed with alkali, whereupon the rest of the hafnium and zirconium
Salt mixture precipitates quantitatively as a water-soluble, basic double fluoride.
If this solution does not contain any free hydrofluoric acid, the same result can be achieved
by adding a concentrated solution of alkali fluoride.
The hafnium-rich double salt mixture obtained in this way is
again subjected to a fractional crystallization, from which waste liquor is
again precipitated through alcohol and continued until a sufficiently rich hafnium
Mixture is obtained.
