Description
The invention relates to the use of adsorbent materials for renovation polluted rooms.
Through increasing environmental awareness and through highly sensitive analysis methods, our environment is increasingly exposed to pollutants moved to the public. For buildings contaminated with pollutants or odors there was an increased need to renovate them with as little effort as possible. Furthermore, one recognized the need for the existing with simple means the presence of pollutants to determine the need for remediation or Record renovation success. Such substances are referred to here as pollutants already in small quantities in humans irritations, allergies or sick triggers. These include, for example, wood preservatives such as pentachlor phenol (PCP) and lindane, plasticizers such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) or also formaldehyde; the latter was and is used in chipboard and medium sometimes classified as suspected of cancer. Also hydrocarbons can be given are also aromatic, or their chlorinated derivatives, as pollutants in the above. Senses for example, escape from paints, paints or adhesives.
Recent findings have shown that the PCB over time from both the sealant and the adjacent concrete elements diffuse from the joint seals into the ambient air be delivered. The air contaminated with PCB is transferred via the air exchange spread the entire building. That of the joint seals, the so-called named primary sources, released PCB is partially reflected in the rooms particle-bound, but also dissolves to a large extent in wall colors and plastics. This causes a number of releases after some time have been formed from so-called secondary emission sources, whereby here Painted wall and ceiling surfaces should be mentioned in particular. This Secondary sources generally contain such a large amount of PCB and represent such a large emission area that a single removal of the Joint seals do not lower the PCB concentration in the room air below that Can cause precautionary values.
Carpets can be another source of harmful and odorous substances represent. The emissions arise e.g. B. in that starting materials this Products under the influence of moisture and / or the stock parts of the substrate material react. Even after removing the bottom flooring continues to emit odors or pollutants, so far either the entire floor is removed or an intermediate floor with a back ventilation had to be relocated.
Another source of emissions for unpleasant, sometimes health harmful emissions are additives to the building material itself. For example, Many buildings are affected by ammonia emissions due to use of ammonium salts, urea or organic amines in the broadest sense as Antifreeze agents for concrete and mortar are attributable. Furthermore, as The cause of the amine evaporation is often a prior use a room z. B. for purposes of animal husbandry, which leads to the fact that Components exposed to pollutants from the air for a long time become. If the sources of these substances are removed, for example one The rededication of a barn building to a residential or business space Substances re-emitted from the secondary sources, wall and ceiling surfaces. This Situation is cause and effect with the above. PCB load problem to compare.
DE 38 18 993 A1 describes a method for the renovation of polluted rooms known. However, the polluted indoor air is cleaned here. this happens by the fact that by means of suitable measures, air on adsorbents is artificial or only is passed through through self-circulation. For example, the pollutant polluted air is pressed through adsorption towers loaded with adsorbents. A Another possibility known from this is to use the air on large areas Flat structures loaded with adsorbents, such as, for example, curtains respectively. However, this procedure has the major disadvantage, just on to access the already polluted indoor air. This causes the cleaned air mixes again and again with the polluted air and therefore at best a thinning effect is achieved.
One possibility for the disposal of contaminated joint sealants is in DE-OS 40 28 434 described. Appropriate measures are taken Sealant, the primary source, cut out and discarded. The procedure it only accesses the primary source. As already described above pollute the pollutants from the secondary sources, wall and ceiling surfaces Indoor air is also very important; with the above Procedures can do this Secondary sources cannot be remediated.
The object of the present invention is to contain polluted rooms renovate. This object is achieved in that those located in rooms Emission sources directly with a water vapor permeable composite material be covered, which contains adsorbent particles that are attached to a flat Backing material fixed in spots or over the entire surface with an adhesive and with are provided with a cover layer, the carrier layer and / or the adhesive form a water vapor permeable barrier layer and depending on the emission source adsorbent particles according to claim 1 or 2 are used. The essential Liche advantage here is that used according to the invention by suitable Materials a passage of the pollutants through the covering layer and thus a transfer of pollutants into the room air is prevented. So you bet the remediation of pollutant sources one step earlier than that Methods known in the art. So it will be with the Use according to the invention prevents the pollutants from entering the May ignite room air or form secondary emission sources during The methods described so far are based on pollutants from the contaminated Remove room air.
The full coverage of the emission source according to the invention has two decisive advantages: There are no more pollutants in the room and Adsorption takes place where the pollutant concentration is highest.
For example, the radon concentration in residential buildings could drop so far be set that even in previously heavily used rooms limit values that the Health care serve, could be observed.
One embodiment is that adjacent to the primary emission sources Cover elements or objects additionally with materials that contain adsorbent parts. This cover is designed to remove harmful substances bind that come about by pollutants from the primary Diffuse emission sources into these neighboring elements and at one Hike to the surface of these components in the room air can.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the material is made of the group of open pore foams, nonwovens and inorganic and organic binders selected. In particular, it is 0.5 to 5 mm thick open pore foam, preferably a reticulated PU foam that is fine has ground adsorbent particles and a binder. Can just as well the material contain a 0.1 to 2.0 mm thick nonwoven fabric that the adsorbent Has particles and a binder.
The material according to the invention, which contains the adsorbing particles, can just as well contains, be carpets, preferably a back coating of carpet floors.
If moisture-insensitive molecular sieves are used as adsorbents, so you get a white base tone, to which any color pigments are added can. An effective control of the layer thickness remains important to local To avoid weak points through insufficient amounts of adsorber.
A further embodiment consists in that the material with the adsorbing particles is a wall wallpaper onto which a reticulated 1 to 5 mm PU foam loaded with adsorbing particles is applied. Such foams are preferably squeezed off and dried with a mixture of ground activated carbon and a binder dispersion. A coal loading of up to 200 g / m 2 is achieved in this case, the binder / coal ratio based on the dry substance being able to vary from 1: 1 to 1: 5.
Another embodiment of the invention is that the material containing adsorbent particles a carrier layer of a flat carrier material from the group of paper, paper wallpaper or textile Sheets, such as woven fabrics, knitted fabrics, non-woven fabrics or glass is woven and the adsorbing particles on this carrier layer are brought. This carrier layer forms with the particles arranged thereon preferably a test strip that is used to determine breakthroughs in the environment poison through barriers or to determine the release of environmental toxins is applied to the covered or uncovered components.
A flat support that can be used for the uses according to the invention material, because it contains activated carbon beads, is described in EP-118 618 A1 and EP 90 073 A2.
These test strips can be used for Emission source with the adsorbents both outside and inside be applied, for example, in the latter case, breakthroughs through a Wallpaper with adsorbent properties or with floor coverings detect adsorbing properties. A strip of 20 × 100 mm, which contains about 0.5 g of activated carbon, is very practical and handy proven. One embodiment consists of a double adhesive tape, one side of which is covered with adsorbent particles and the other is covered with a siliconized protective paper to be removed before use. The strip is packaged in a gas-tight envelope that covers the activated carbon up to Protects the insert and also serves for the return to the analytical laboratory. The strips can be z. B. on the underside of chairs, tables, etc. Apply light pressure and remove again.
Another application for this test strip is the monitoring of the renovation buildings contaminated with pollutants, which will be explained using an example. As already described above, this occurred due to the evaporation of PCB in panel buildings to large-scale contamination of walls and ceilings Cover the contaminated area with neutrali-containing wallpaper let sieren. Here it is advisable to break through the PCB to be able to recognize the wallpaper in time. For this purpose the test strip with the adsorbent particles facing the wall on the surface of the adsorbent wallpaper. It is preferably a Overlap test strips (1 cm overlap on all sides) turns so that the adsorption layer is not touched by the adhesive. On the for Interior-facing side can also have a barrier layer, for example a Aluminum foil, to increase the effectiveness of the strip.
Regarding the renovation of an odor and pollutant emitting floor or floor covering is an embodiment of the invention Use in between the contaminated floor or floor and the new carpet or another new floor covering, a layer used according to the invention or a layer used according to the invention Lay material through which the odor and pollutants are adsorbed. For this use according to the invention, for example, on a flexible carrier material by means of a punctiformly printed adhesive granular or spherical adsorbents, preferably activated carbon, but also porous Polymers adhered and made with a light air-permeable textile Material covered. A usable for this use according to the invention Flat carrier material containing activated carbon beads is described in EP 118 618 A1 and EP 90 073 A2.
Another option is to steam the backing material with a steam permeable coating to be used as an adhesive for the adsorbents works. The adsorbents are sprinkled into this coating; to The resulting layer of adsorbents is dried with a light textile fabrics covered. Due to the full-surface coating is next to the adsorbent layer installed an additional barrier layer, due to their Permeability to water vapor allows the floor to "breathe". The use of an adsor material that is not part of the carpet then allows to lay any carpet on this material. The adsorbents but can also be attached directly to the carpet. Prerequisite for this is a high quality back coating that is also an adhesive for the adsor is needed. This back coating can also be done with a light textile Fabrics are covered. In this way of working are the adsorbents at least 50%, preferably between 70 to 80% freely accessible. This is advantageous in terms of adsorption kinetics, since no adhesive layer through must be hiked. Activated carbon, the z. B. in powder form in the back coating is compared to this due to the reduced accessibility the outer surface little efficient.
The one containing the adsorbent particles used in the present invention Material is therefore a water vapor permeable composite material that consists of a carrier layer made of a flat Backing material from the group of paper, paper wallpaper or textile surfaces formed, such as woven, knitted, non-woven or glass fiber weave, the adsorbent particles located on this carrier layer containing layer and a layer containing the adsorbing particles thereon Layer applied covering layer, wherein the carrier layer and / or the adhesive form a water vapor permeable barrier layer. So this composite material has one Sandwich structure consisting of carrier layer, adsorbent particles and cover layer. Here, the adsorbing particles by means of an adhesive containing preparation applied to the carrier layer. With the adhesive it is organic binders, especially a plastic dispersion or a low-solvent two-component system, or it is from the Group of latices, such as natural latex selected. This is the adhesive containing preparation can either be punctiform or as a full surface Coating can be applied. Since the water and air permeability of materials used in construction are important The role of the adhesive is particularly with a full-surface coating to make water vapor permeable.
The cover layer used in the materials which can be used according to the invention is a flat carrier material from the group of paper, paper wallpaper or textile Sheets, such as woven fabrics, knitted fabrics, non-woven fabrics or glass fiber woven. This cover layer can preferably be made with a hot melt adhesive point or a thin hot-melt adhesive fleece onto which the adsorbing particles containing material to be laminated.
A composite material that can be used according to the invention can, for example, be as follows are produced: the support pointing towards the interior (textile fabric, Special paper or glass fiber fabric) with a water vapor permeable full-surface coating, which is also an adhesive for the granular or spherical adsorbents. The coating is applied before drying sprinkled the adsorbents. The excess is suctioned off. The adsorption layer is then covered, for example by a light textile, in front of them to protect the adhesive with which the composite material sticks to the component becomes. Light, fine-meshed polyester nonwovens are preferably suitable as a cover with a printed hot melt adhesive.
Imprapermtypen®.The full-surface coating has the decisive advantage that also with Use of an open textile backing material to be painted can, without the wall paint covering the adsorbents, damaged or in any otherwise inaccessible to the pollutants to be adsorbed. Dispersions with which water vapor permeable coatings are produced Plextole® or Impranile® or Imprapermtypen®.
Another way to counteract the adsorbent particles in the material Protecting the paint from streaking through is as follows: The cover layer is facing the wall, and the adsorbers themselves are connected to the outside or Carrier material covered, with an adhesive line between the adsorber and the outer or Carrier material a hot melt adhesive slit film is used. This ensures ensures that sufficient moisture can penetrate, but not the color.
However, low-solvent or solvent-free colors should preferably be used for painting be used.
In a further embodiment according to the invention, the emission side of the composite material facing away from the source, d. H. on the carrier or else Cover layer an additional water vapor through casual barrier layer, arranged. The barrier layer is generally within the Composite material on the side of the adsorption facing away from the emission source layer introduced.
The adsorbent material which can be used according to the invention can be as water vapor permeable barrier layer formed sheet material and a contain layer containing adsorbent particles thereon. A Cover layer is on the layer containing the adsorbent particles is arranged.
Another adsorbent material that can be used according to the invention in the form of a Composite material contains a flat carrier material, a additional, water vapor permeable barrier layer, and one on this barrier layer located layer containing adsorbent particles. This adsorbing In a further embodiment according to the invention, material contains a Cover layer on which the adsorbent particles containing layer is arranged.
The barrier layer's job is to determine the contact time between the pollutants and increase the adsorbents by increasing the rate of migration of the Pollutants from the emission source to the surface of the composite material delayed. Another benefit of the barrier is to prevent it from being heavy volatile, permanently adsorbable gases from the indoor air into the adsorption Walk layer and reduce the adsorptive effect there, e.g. B. against from the Radon escaping the wall. It is preferably used when as Carrier material porous, air-permeable fabrics are used. A such barrier layer is water vapor permeable to breathing not to prevent the masonry.
The barrier layer can also be the adhesive for the adsorbent particles his. However, the barrier layer can also consist of one on the inside of the outer layer of the composite material laminated slot film, preferably from a Hot melt adhesive slit film exist on the other side with the adsor is connected particles. In a further embodiment, the Barrier layer may be a latex paint or a latex paint coat that is on the outer, side of the composite material facing the interior is applied.
In beiden o. g. With regard to the adsorption of radon, it has been shown that the use of a Hot melt adhesive slit film as a barrier layer with which the outer room-side cover layer was laminated onto the adsorption layer, is very efficient. Depending on Laminating temperature, the passage of air is reduced by approx. 90% and at the same time radon adsorption significantly improved. The passage of moisture is there more than sufficient so that there is no risk of moisture build-up in the masonry. A material can be used for radon adsorption in which the rear side the outer material is provided with a water vapor permeable coating, which also serves as an adhesive layer for the adsorber grains or beads. On the adsorbent layer created after the coating process then becomes a Laminated cover, which can be, for example, a textile or a paper. In both of the above In some cases, the radon first comes into contact with the adsorption layer. The part of the radon that has not yet been completely adsorbed collides on the barrier layer or is braked by it, so that the adsorption process can continue.
In a further embodiment of the adsor used according to the invention materials is the side of the material facing the emission source or composite material (carrier or cover layer) a separating layer, the The object is to enable removal of the composite material in such a way that the latter can be removed from the emission source and disposed of. The Distance is to be understood here so that in particular the adsorbing Particles in combination with the carrier layer and completely from the emission source can be removed. This separating layer can preferably be a split paper or a split fleece or it consists of two easy-to-separate fiber fleeces.
Practical tests by the applicant have shown that in the case of the adsorption of PCB on activated carbon due to the favorable adsorption balance the PCB the emission source (for example from a contaminated wall) " is sucked "and the wall is almost free of PCB after a few years Separating layer has the particular task here, for example of a wallpaper simple way to tear off the emission source to make it one hazardous waste disposal, e.g. incineration of hazardous waste, feed. The PCB-containing adsorbents should be as complete as possible be recorded. In order to achieve this goal, a weak point (break place) in the composite of the substrate or wallpaper. The following exemplary structure offers this possibility: The textile outer material carries adsorber grains on the side facing the wall discontinuously applied adhesive stick to the textile material. The adsorbers are in turn covered with a split paper. Fission papers have a relatively good one glued surface, but are hardly glued inside and therefore cleavable. When torn off, one half remains on the wall and can be used as a base for one new wallpaper will serve while the other half will continue the adsorbents covers; thus any loss of adsorbents is avoided.
Another option, for example a wallpaper without loss of adsorbents subtract is to cover the adsorbents facing the wall to make it sufficiently strong so that it does not tear when the wallpaper is removed. The adhesive substrate can preferably be moistened first.
An advantage of the composite material described above in general is that the Move pollutants freely within the adsorption layer until adsorption can. Should it be due to a special nature of the emission source stronger pollutant emissions occur in places, so this can affect Because of the barrier layer or sandwich structure in the adsorption Extend layer laterally (no local overload). It stands in all directions Always a large amount of adsorbents available that are even Allow distribution of pollutants. When sealing without entering Adsorbents, for example with an aluminum foil, come into play Damage to migration effects and massive breakthroughs.
In contrast, there are small local damages to the composite according to the invention materials e.g. B. completely harmless through boreholes, since the effect z. B. an adsorp tive wallpaper on the binding of pollutants in the vicinity of the emission source is based and is not dependent on full-scale, full isolation.
Another embodiment of the use according to the invention consists in that the materials containing the adsorbent particles in the form of strips are present, for example, over the sealants containing pollutants sealed joints are applied or pressed into these joints. This Strips can preferably be covered again with a suitable material in order to ensure that pollutants can pass through with absolute certainty Exclude space. Since the joint sealing compound generally deepens somewhat there is enough space for a thick strip of adsorbent material available; Larger amounts of adsorbent can be found in this recess Particles are housed, making security even after many Years can be guaranteed.
The adsorbent particles which can be used or used according to the invention for adsorbing materials are powdered activated carbon, activated carbon beads, activated carbon granules, carbonized and activated ion exchangers, pitch-based spherical carbon or hydrophobic molecular sieves, e.g. B. compacts from hydrophobic molecular sieves. The adsorbing particles, in particular the activated carbon, preferably have an inner surface area of at least 900 m 2 / g. The activated carbon beads or granules preferably have a diameter of 0.1 to 2.0 mm, in particular 0.3 to 1.0 mm. The adsorbent particles are preferably present in an amount of 5 to 400 g / m 2 , in particular 10 to 250 g / m 2 .
The production of carbonized and activated ion exchangers is carried out in the DE 43 04 026 A1. The materials used according to the invention generally contain up to 70 weight percent adsorbent particles.
Numerous methods are suitable for applying the adsorbing particles, for example onto the carrier material. For example, as described in DE-A-32-11 322, a paste of activated carbon and a binder dispersion can be printed in piles by means of rotary screen printing, with runs of up to 100 g / m 2 being achieved. DE-A-33 04 349 describes the use of spherical activated carbon which is made to adhere to a textile surface by means of a punctiform applied mass.
A pitch-based spherical carbon is a suitable adsorbent for the present invention. For example, when using a spherical carbon with a diameter of 0.3 to 0.8 mm, up to 1000 beads per cm 2 can be applied to the carrier material of the test strips according to the invention or of the composite material. This corresponds to more than 20 mg / cm 2 activated carbon, which is practically freely accessible since the adhesive only closes 10 to 15% of the pores. With an inner surface of 1000 to 1200 m 2 / g and a micropore volume of 0.3 ml / g with a pore diameter of 0.5 to 1.2 nm, with a focus at 0.8 to 0.9 nm, the spherical carbon is for the use according to the invention is particularly suitable. It is important that the micropores are relatively narrow, because then the adsorption forces are strongest. On the other hand, the micropores must be large enough to be able to absorb the not very small pollutant molecules, for example the PCB mole. Therefore pore diameters from 0.6 to 1.0 nm are very favorable. Such pore diameters can be found, for example, in activated carbon based on pitch (spherical carbon), based on coconut shells and based on certain hard coal. Pollutants are strongly adsorbed in these materials and are permanently retained.
A homogeneous loading of the is important for the effectiveness of the composite material Carrier layer with the adsorbing particles. It will especially then guaranteed if you use spherical activated carbon.
In addition to the spherical coal, it is also possible to use grain coal or splinter coal (with a particle size of 0.3 to 2 mm) can be used. The ball coal is because of its smooth, abrasion-resistant surface and the one that can be reached with it however, preferable to optimal occupancy.
In order to be able to adsorb certain pollutants, it may be necessary to: to impregnate adsorbent particles and different adsorbent Use particles: pure activated carbon for high-boiling pollutants, for example PCB and PCP; pure activated carbon, preferably with very small micropores, for Solvents; acid impregnated activated carbon, for example with phosphoric acid Adsorption of ammonia and amines; basic impregnated activated carbon, for example wise with potassium carbonate, for acid gases; with 2-amino-1,3-propanediol or Trimethanolamine impregnated coal for the adsorption of formaldehyde; with a Carbon impregnated with sulfur to adsorb mercury vapors; Activated carbon impregnated with copper salts for the adsorption of sulfur and nitrogenous pollutants; to name just the most important ones.
With regard to the ammonia evaporation of the masonry, the application has wallpaper containing activated carbon particles impregnated with phosphoric acid, proven particularly well. Such wallpapers basically have the above described sandwich structure, with granular or spherical adsor between two fabrics made of textile or paper, of which one the carrier layer for the adsorbents and the other the cover layer for are the adsorbents. Are also suitable carbonized and activated cation exchangers, for example based sulfonated styrene / divinylbenzene copolymers, which the activated carbon in terms of physical properties are very similar.
For the purposes of the use according to the invention, the outer surface is the adsorbent particles preferably at least 50%, especially between 75 and 80%, for the pollutants and odors freely accessible.
The emission sources that are renovated according to the invention are ins special about components and building materials containing odors and pollutants, such as for example walls, support elements, prefabricated walls, concrete slabs, floors, ceilings, Wooden beams, wooden planks, wooden floors, joints, sealants, fillers and Joint sealants.
Dazu zählen insbesondere poly chlorierte Phenole (PCP), polychlorierte Biphenyle (PCB), chlorierte Kohlenwasserstoffe (CKW), polykondensierte aromatische Verbindungen (PAK), Chlor paraffine, Phthalate, Amine, 2-Ethylhexanol, Ammoniak und Radon.Pollutants in the sense of the present invention include in particular powdered activated carbon, activated carbon beads, activated carbon granules, carbonized and activated ion exchangers, pitch-based spherical carbon or hydrophobic Molecular sieves, e.g. B. compacts from hydrophobic molecular sieves understood adsorbable pollutants. These include in particular poly chlorinated phenols (PCP), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHC), polycondensed aromatic compounds (PAH), chlorine paraffins, phthalates, amines, 2-ethylhexanol, ammonia and radon.
The interior walls of a prefabricated building, which had been contaminated by exposure to indoor air contaminated with PCBs for many years, were coated over the entire area with a dispersion adhesive for heavy wallpapers. A surface filter according to EP 118 618 A1 was embedded in the adhesive bed, consisting of a glass fabric wallpaper which was loaded on one side with 210 g / m 2 activated carbon beads with a diameter of 0.5 mm with the aid of a dot-printed adhesive and covered with a polyester fleece has been. After completing this work, the PCB indoor air concentration dropped from approx. 10,000 ng / m 3 to below 300 ng / m 3 and remained below this value in the subsequent period. The covering material gave the impression of a textile wallpaper.
A web of polyester fabric with a basis weight of approx. 100 g / m 2 , on which approx. 200 g / m 2 spherical carbon (average diameter 0.55 mm) adhered, was cut into strips, the joints to be covered by 1.5 on both sides cm overlapped. The strips were fixed with adhesive strips, whereupon a wallpaper according to. Example 1, which in turn was coated with 200 g / m 2 spherical coal, was applied.
Siliconized protective paper was divided into three parts on a 10 cm wide adhesive strip: in strips 7 cm wide and 1.5 cm to the left and right of it Width (1.5 cm + 7.0 cm + 1.5 cm = 10 cm). The middle strip of protective paper was progressively removed and at the same time the adhesive layer with the spherical carbon of the Sprinkled example 4, which immediately adhered well. The streak coated with spherical carbon could be rolled up easily. The side protections were in place paper peeled off and the strip attached so that the carbon layer is the joint approx. 1.5 cm overlapped. It was papered over this strip as in Example 2.
A 1 cm thick sheet of reticulated, large-pore PU foam (Liter weight 30 g, porosity 15 ppi) was thoroughly with an adhesive (Impranil® HS62 + Imprafix® HSC, 30 g / l). Then in a Vibrating device entered 200 g of spherical carbon per liter of foam. After Ent Removal of the excess and thermal curing of the adhesive was the Cut the strip into 4.5 cm wide strips, which are then cut into the approx. 4 cm wide joints was pressed. The strips were fixed with an adhesive strip as an attachment. These strips were overtapped as in Examples 2 and 3.
In Examples 2 to 4, PCB-contaminated sealants in Prefabricated buildings renovated. In these examples, according to the invention No PCB can be detected using the outside of the cover.
Analog tests on a laboratory scale have shown that in the same way as described in the examples also moisture-insensitive instead of activated carbon Molecular sieves can be used.
As was shown in the preceding examples, emissions of pollutants, such as PCB, can be very strongly suppressed and also completely prevented by the use according to the invention. In comparison to the passive collectors according to the prior art, the use according to the invention results in a practically 100% direct adsorption of the pollutants diffusing from the emission source. High-boiling pollutants in particular are permanently retained. Tests by the applicant have shown that pollutants up to an amount of 10 percent by weight, based on the adsorbing particles, are permanently adsorbed. A coal quantity of 200 g / m 2 can therefore render up to 20 g / m 2 harmless in the long run. Since such quantities never occur in practice, the activated carbon is never exhausted.
