Abstract
Description
The invention relates to methods of recovery contains the tungsten and other metal contents from tungsten objects. It relates in particular to Process for the recovery of tungsten and other Me tall content from objects containing tungsten additionally one or more transition metals and / or over contain gear metal carbides.
One method is in U.S. Patent No. 4,406,866 (Reilly) for the recovery of refractory metal contents from with Scrap cemented (hardened) tungsten carbide items those described, usually with an alumina coating, where you put them first in chlorwas Seric acid opens up (digested). The open-minded Objects are crushed and then oxidized under Formation of tungsten oxide powder. The tungsten oxide powder is finally digested in sodium hydroxide (digested) to form water-soluble sodium wolf ramat.
In the Reilly process, sodium is recovered procedure introduced. Once sodium is introduced has been, there are several additional process steps required to get the sodium from the recovered tungsten to remove again, whereby the complexity and the Ko should be increased for the recovery process. If if the sodium is not removed from the process, leads this in the resulting ammonium paratungstate solution unacceptable levels of contaminants.
In addition, the Na used in the Reilly process trium hydroxide digestion solutions highly corrosive and req relatively aggressive digestion conditions (high Temperatures and long digestion times) to the tungsten solubilize.
It would be progress in this area if length, an effective method of recovering the wolf ram and other metal contents from tungsten containing Provide items without sodium in the Recovery process is introduced.
An object of the present invention is therefore that To avoid disadvantages of the prior art. A white teres object of the invention is an improved Process for the recovery of tungsten and other Me tall content from objects containing tungsten create.

Treating the tungsten-containing articles with heated hydrochloric acid to form (1) an acid-leached tungsten-containing material which additionally contains essentially all transition metal carbides and (2) an acidic metal chloride solution which contains essentially all transition metals;
then oxidizing the acid-leached material containing Wolf ram in air to form tungsten trioxide and transition metal oxides;
then treating the oxides with an ammonium hydroxide solution to form an ammonium tungstate solution containing at least 80% of the tungsten-containing articles originally contained, and a slurry containing the transition metal oxides and not more than 20% of the articles originally contained in the tungsten contains existing tungsten; and
then evaporating the ammonium tungstate solution to form ammonium paratungstate.
Die saure Metallchloridlösung kann weiter behandelt wer den, um die säurelöslichen Übergangsmetalle daraus zu ge winnen (abzutrennen).The acidic metal chloride solution can be treated further to get the acid-soluble transition metals from it win (separate).
The sludge containing tungsten can be further treated the with a sodium hydroxide solution to form a Sodium tungstate solution, which is essentially the whole contains remaining tungsten, and one depleted of tungsten solid material that is essentially all over Contains gang metal oxides.
For a better understanding of the present invention and to explain other and further goals, advantages and Features of the same will appear on the description below and referred to the claims below.
Tungsten and other transition metal contents can Objects containing tungsten, for example from Scrap hardened tungsten carbide objects, according to the method according to the invention can be recovered. Heard tete tungsten carbide objects, e.g. B. tungsten carbide Cutting tools and tool inserts contain binders talle, e.g. B. cobalt, nickel and / or iron and others Transition metals including, but not limited to restricted to be silver, copper, tantalum, niobium and titanium. Many hardened tungsten carbide items also have oxi dation-resistant coatings made of titanium carbide, for example or titanium nitride or they can have other components, e.g. B. tantalum carbide, to improve the wear egg properties included.
The tungsten-containing objects that make up the wolf ram and other metal contents can be recovered can have a shape and size in the range of large, voluminous (bulky) objects to fine ones Have powders. It may therefore be necessary or desirable be the large items containing tungsten first to crush to pieces one to obtain uniform size and shape, which in the after following acid leaching operation more easily be closed (digested). By crushing it also the total surface area of the tungsten containing Items increased to numerous by disassembling them smaller pieces and penetration of any oxidations resistant coatings.
The subsequent digestion and oxidation processes are more effective when the tungsten-containing objects too have only been crushed.
It has been found that the economics of Ver driving can be significantly improved if the tungsten containing items to pieces with a sufficient small size are crushed so that they have a sieve Pass 1/4 inch openings. The shredder tion can in a hammer mill, for example one Hammer mill to be carried out for a period of time sufficient to shred the objects evenly to pieces of the desired size, preferably of about 1/4 inch. The exact crushing times are not critical and vary with size, shape and Composition of the initial containing tungsten Objects.
The articles containing tungsten can then be used as follows standing described can be oxidized or before preferably first with a heated hydrogen chloride acid leach solution to be treated to the acid-soluble Chen transition metals from the acid-insoluble transition metal carbides including tungsten carbide before the oxide separation level. The preferred acid leach solution is a boiling (110 ° C) azeotropic (6 N) chlorine water Substance acid solution.
Since the digestion solution and the digestion conditions so ge stalten that all acid-soluble transition metals from the objects containing tungsten are leached out, there is a risk that the metal container, which is made of acid soluble transition metals, especially titanium, be attacked by the acid and therefore should these are not used in this procedure. At Titanium containers are also at risk of being damaged by the Reactions that occur in this procedure are attacked become. The acid digestion stage is preferably in Containers carried out with non-reactive natural or synthetic linings are.
The acid digestion process can be carried out in batches or it can be in the form of a continuous out exchange reaction are carried out in which the reactants come into contact with each other in a countercurrent pattern. Because the tungsten containing items are extremely dense and heavy, they can be difficult to transport. Therefore, a semi-countercurrent exchange reaction is at who only transports the acid leach solution and which Items containing tungsten remain stationary before moves.
If the tungsten-containing objects are in the form of a Powder is present, which is an average particle has a size of less than about 300 µm, can be during the Acid digestion process causes excessive foaming due to waxes and other contaminants found in the powder may be present. This foaming can be reduced or controlled (controlled) if that Acid digestion process carried out in a leaching bed in which the heated acid contains the tungsten percolating powder.
For tungsten containing articles with the preferred one Size (about 1/4 inch) can acid leach driving for at least 60 h or so long until the normality of the finished acidic metal chlo rid solution has reached the value 1 (unit). Finer wolf ram containing powders can be made within a shorter Time to be fully unlocked while bigger Objects containing tungsten have longer digestion times require. After the digestion has ended, the resulting acidic metal chloride solution is usually a Cobalt concentration between 100 and 140 g / l cobalt. The Concentration of the other transition metals in the acid Metal chloride solution can cause the total concentration tion of the transition metals in the solution the value of 200 g / l exceeds.
The acidic metal chloride solution can then result mate containing acid-leached tungsten rial be separated. The acidic metal chloride solution can using known recovery methods are treated to include the transition metals any binding metals to be recovered therefrom.
The acid-leached, tungsten-containing material which is obtained in the above acid digestion process contains the transition metal carbides that were originally in the articles containing tungsten were present, and it is poor in acid-soluble transition metals and any binding metals contained in the tungsten Initial items were originally present. The acid-leached, tungsten-containing material then in the air at a temperature of at least 500 ° C are oxidized for at least 2 hours to produce a Tungsten trioxide powder. Any over gang metal carbides, which in the acid leached Tungsten containing materials are included, depending on their oxides oxidized. The color and appearance of the with acid-leached material containing tungsten change during the oxidation of black metal pieces into a flaky yellow powder. The one for a complete The minimum time required for oxidation varies with the Size and weight of the counterpart containing tungsten stands. The preferred oxidation conditions for tungsten containing pieces with a diameter of 1/4 inch are an oxidation temperature of about 850 ° C and a period of about 10 hours under static conditions.
The tungsten trioxide powder and the transition metal oxides can then be treated with an ammonium hydroxide solution for the preparation of an ammonium tungstate solution, the at least 80% of the object contained in the tungsten contains the original tungsten, and one Solid material, which the remaining tungsten and Contains transition metal oxides. The tungsten trioxide can ent neither in concentrated (14.5 M) ammonium hydroxide Atmospheric conditions for at least 150 hours at one Temperature of at least 75 ° C or it can preferably be in a solution of at least 3M Ammonium hydroxide in a closed container for about 2 hours long at a temperature of at least 80 ° C, preferably of 100 ° C.
The Am obtained from the ammonium hydroxide digestion stage monium tungstate solution can then be obtained from the resulting Solid material are separated. The ammonium wolfra mat solution can then be heated to a temperature of at least be heated at least 70 ° C, preferably evaporated for the production of white crystals from ammonium para wolframat, which is the general formula 5 (NH₄) ₂O · 12WO₃ · 5H₂O and have at least 80% of the in Items originally containing tungsten Tungsten included.
The tungsten contents can be determined using known ver drive recovered from the ammonium paratungstate the.
The one obtained in the ammonium hydroxide digestion process solid material is a sludge attached to the binding metals and is depleted in acid-soluble transition metals. It contains the transition metal oxides and not more than 20% of the objects contained in the tungsten originally existing tungsten.
The sludge can be processed in an alkaline digestion process be treated with sodium hydroxide to produce a Sodium tungstate solution, which contains practically the entire rest che contains tungsten, and one solid tungsten-depleted Material that essentially covers the entire transition period contains talloxides. This solid mate, poor in tungsten rial can be further treated to the transition metal loxides including tantalum, niobium and titanium oxides to recover.
So at least 80% of the tungsten as well as any acid-soluble transition metals and possible binders talle, which are found in the objects containing tungsten originally existed on effective and effective Be recovered without sodium in the reak tion is introduced.
The invention has been more preferred above on hand Embodiments explained in more detail, but it is for the Those skilled in the art realize that they are not is limited, but that various changes and Mon differences can be made without this the scope of the present invention is left.
