Abstract
Description
The invention relates to an optical magnetic field sensor for measuring a magnetic field using the Faraday effect tes.
The main patent (patent application P 37 26 411.7) is the subject a fiber optic magnetic field sensor in which the magnetic field dependent rotation of the plane of polarization of a linearly polarized th light beam that propagates in an optical fiber, is measured. This fiber optic magnetic field sensor contains a light source for generating a linearly polarized Light beam, the direction of polarization with a pre given angular speed rotates and an optical ver branching device for dividing the light beam into little at least one measuring beam and at least one reference beam, so that a reference beam is assigned to each of the measuring beams. An optical fiber is provided to guide the measuring beam, which at the same time as a magnetic field sensitive fiber optic measurement route serves. The measuring beam and the reference beam are each an analyzer device for measuring the intensity of the Light rays in a given direction of polarization ordered, being for the analyzer device of a measuring beam and the analyzer device of the reference beam samer phase detector is provided. Besides, there are still optical devices for generating measuring beams seen which the optical fiber in opposite to each other go through set directions.
In "Journal of Lightwave Technology, Vol. LT-4, No. 6, 1986, pages 640 to 644" a light source is proposed in order to generate a linearly polarized light beam whose direction of polarization rotates at a given angular velocity frequency-modulated laser diode is connected to a Michelson interferometer. The light emitted by the laser diode is split into the two arms of the Michelson interferometer. The two interferometer arms contain mutually crossed polarizers. The light beams polarized perpendicularly to one another by these polarizers experience a phase difference in the Michelson interferometer in accordance with the optical path length. By means of a λ / 4 plate, these mutually phase-shifted and orthogonal components are assembled to form a linearly polarized light beam, the direction of polarization of which depends both on the path difference of the Michelson interferometer and on the frequency of the light emitted by the laser diode. By changing the injection current in the laser diode, the light frequency and thus the polarization level of the light emerging from the λ / 4 plate can be changed. The injection current in the laser diode is changed in a saw-like manner, the amplitude of the change in current being dimensioned such that there is a rotation of the polarization direction by 180 °. The rotation frequency of the rotation of the polarization direction is then half the modulation frequency of the injection current.
However, this known light source has the disadvantage that in Ab dependence on the path difference of the Michelson interferometer a part of the light emitted by the laser diode the laser diode falls back. However, this creates problems the modulation of the laser diode.
The invention is based on the object of an optical Specify magnetic field sensor, in which the disadvantage mentioned be is sided.
The stated object is achieved according to the invention with the notes paint the main claim. By using a Mach Ten The interferometer ensures that the laser diode practically no light is fed back, because with one Mach-Zehnder interferometer with the interferometer outputs Interferometer inputs do not coincide.
In a particularly preferred embodiment there is an exit the Mach-Zehnder interferometer directly with an analyzer facility connected. This will reduce the number of Chen beam splitter reduced.
In addition to optical fibers, optical materials can also be used as magneto-optical components which have a higher Verdet constant than optical fibers and thus require a shorter light path. This enables further miniaturization of the sensitive part of the magnetic field sensor to be arranged in the magnetic field. The design and selection of the magneto-optical component depends on the respective application. Instead of the requirement for a high Verdet constant, for example, the requirement for the smallest possible temperature dependency may also be in the foreground. Crystals with a high Verdet constant, preferably Bi 12 SiO 20 single crystals and ZnSe crystals, and glasses with a low temperature coefficient, in particular SF6 flint glass, are suitable as magneto-optical components.
Weitere vorteilhafte Ausgestaltungen der Erfindung ergeben sich gemäß den Unteransprüchen 7 bis 9.Further advantageous embodiments of the invention result according to subclaims 7 to 9.
To further explain the invention, reference is made to the drawing referenced in their only figure an optical magnetic field sensor according to the invention is illustrated schematically.
Referring to FIG. 1, an optical magnetic field sensor includes a light source 1 which emits a linearly polarized light beam 2, whose direction of polarization is rotated with a predetermined angular velocity about the propagation direction of the light beam 2. With an optical branching device 5 , the light beam 2 is broken down into a measuring beam 10 and a reference beam 12 , which is fed to an analyzer device 22 . The measuring beam 10 is coupled into a magneto-optical component 70 , which serves as an optical magnetic field sensitive measuring section. The magneto-optical component 70 is arranged in a magnetic field H , the sensitivity being greatest when the direction of propagation of the measuring beam 10 runs parallel to the magnetic field H. The measuring beam 10 is coupled into the magneto-optical component 70 at the coupling surface 73 , crosses the magneto-optical component 70 and emerges at the opposite coupling surface 74 . The coupling surface 74 is assigned a mirror 9 , on which the measuring beam 10 is reflected and a measuring beam 11 is generated, which passes through the optical component 70 in the opposite direction. This creates an almost reciprocal light path through which the intrinsic circular birefringence properties are largely compensated. This reciprocal light path can also be achieved by mirroring the coupling surface 74 . By means of a branching device 6 arranged in the light path between the branching device 5 and the magneto-optical component 70 , the measuring beam 11 is passed on to an analyzer device 21 . The branching devices 5 and 6 can also be combined in a single beam splitter. In the analyzer devices 21 and 22 , analyzers each filter out a component of the measuring beam 11 or of the reference beam 12 that is polarized in a predetermined polarization direction. The intensities of these components are converted into electrical signals by light receivers, for example photodiodes, contained in the analyzer devices 21 and 22 . An oscillation is impressed on each of these electrical signals, which can be filtered out, for example, for noise suppression by means of a bandpass filter which is also contained in the analyzer devices 21 and 22 . The electrical signals present at the output of the analyzer devices 21 and 22 are fed to a phase detector 30 , the output signal of which is proportional to the phase difference Φ between these signals. This phase difference Φ contains, in addition to the phase shift Φ F caused by the Faraday effect, also apparatus-related constant components Φ o and Φ o ', which can be compensated, for example, by the position of the lines 21 and 22 contained in the analyzer devices.
Zur Miniaturi sierung des Magnetfeldsensors sind insbesondere Gläser oder Kristalle mit großer Verdet-Konstante, beispielsweise Bi12SiO20 -Einkristalle oder ZnSe-Kristalle geeignet (T.Mitsui, K.Hosoe, H.Usami, S.Miyamoto, "Development of Fiber-Optic Vol tage Sensors and Magnetic-Field Sensors", IEEE Trans. on Power Delivery, 1987, Vol. 2, No. 1, Seiten 87-93).All materials are suitable as magneto-optical component 70 which show a Faraday rotation of the polarization plane of the light propagating in them in the magnetic field. Glasses or crystals with a large Verdet constant, for example Bi 12 SiO 20 single crystals or ZnSe crystals, are particularly suitable for miniaturization of the magnetic field sensor (T.Mitsui, K.Hosoe, H.Usami, S.Miyamoto, "Development of Fiber- Optic Voltage Sensors and Magnetic-Field Sensors ", IEEE Trans. On Power Delivery, 1987, Vol. 2, No. 1, pages 87-93).
Für Anwendungszwecke, bei denen das magneto-optische Bauteil 70 stark schwankenden Umgebungstemperaturen ausgesetzt ist, ist als Werkstoff vorzugsweise SF6-Flintglas vorgesehen (K.Kyuma, S.Tai, M.Nunoshita, T.Takioka, Y.Ida, "Fiber Optic Measuring System for Electric Current by Using a Magnetooptic Sensor", IEEE Journ. of Quantum Electr., 1982, Vol. QE18, No. 10, Seiten 1619 bis 1623).For applications in which the magneto-optical component 70 is exposed to strongly fluctuating ambient temperatures, SF6 flint glass is preferably provided as the material (K.Kyuma, S.Tai, M.Nunoshita, T.Takioka, Y.Ida, "Fiber Optic Measuring System for Electric Current by Using a Magnetooptic Sensor ", IEEE Journ. Of Quantum Electr., 1982, Vol. QE18, No. 10, pages 1619 to 1623).
The light source 1 contains a frequency-modulated laser diode 50 and an existing Mach-Zehnder interferometer consisting of the beam splitters 52 and 55 as well as of the mirrors 53 and 54 . The beam splitter 52 is preferably a polarization beam splitter which splits the light emitted by the laser diode into two mutually orthogonally polarized components, one component of which is oriented parallel to the mirror surfaces of the mirrors 53 and 54 , in the figure perpendicular to the plane of the drawing. Instead of a polarization beam splitter, a polarizer can be provided in each of the two arms of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer.
An output of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer is assigned a λ / 4 plate 56 which is arranged at an angle of 45 ° to the two components polarized perpendicular to one another. At the output 57 of the light source 1 is thus a light beam 2 , the direction of polarization of which rotates at an angular rate around its direction of propagation, which is half the modulation frequency of the laser diode.
In a preferred embodiment, the analyzer device 22 can be optically connected directly to the second output 58 of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In this arrangement, the beam splitter 5 is therefore no longer required.
A reciprocal light path can also be brought about in that the light beam is split into two partial light beams by means of optical branching devices. From these partial light beams len before entering the magneto-optical component 70 with means of further branching devices, two test beams are generated, which are coupled into the magneto-optical component 70 in analogy to the embodiment according to FIG. 3 of the main patent on the opposite coupling surfaces 73 and 74 .
Both for guiding the light beams and for Beam splitting particularly suitable for fiber optic components, since these allow a mechanically less sensitive structure.
