Description

Process for converting sodium bicarbonate into neutral carbonate. It is known that Na HCO $ is largely dissociated in aqueous solution and can only be stored in the presence of CO " (cf. Gmelin-Kraut, Vol. 11 1, 7th edition, p. 449 below). It is also clear that that Na HC 03, due to its nature as an acid salt, must change into neutral soda when strong alkalis are added.Up to a certain extent, neutral soda must also be formed if a weaker base, such as ammonia, is added to the solution , which adds Na HC 03. As a result of the hydrolysis, however, this reaction must remain very incomplete, and during evaporation and dissolution, Na HC 03 will for the most part remain again as a result of the volatilization of the ammonia.

For the conversion of large amounts of NaHCO3 into Nag C 03, such processes are out of the question as long as they require that the bicarbonate has to be dissolved beforehand. In soda production, the conversion of large, relatively dry quantities of bicarbonate into neutral soda is a technically important task, and it is known that the practice makes use of the effect of heat. The surprising observation has now been made that the conversion of solid NaHCO 3 can also be achieved by treatment with high-percentage aqueous ammonia without it being necessary to bring the salt into solution beforehand. So you can z. B. on a closed suction filter Na HC 0g in Nag CO $ by repeatedly washing it with 40 percent ammonia and then after-treating the ammonia with saturated soda solution to remove .des ammonia. Based on the known facts, this behavior of the Na HC 0 could not be foreseen. Apparently it is based on the following processes: The treatment of NaHGOg with 4% ammonia initially creates a very poorly soluble double compound, which, based on the previous findings, is known as Na HCO, or (Na, C 0, - [NH,] 2 CO,) or ( Na, C 0g - H2 0 - N H2 COON H4) or a similar compound can be considered. When treating this compound with saturated soda solution, the carbonic acid can be washed out of it in the form of ammonia compounds, so that neutral soda remains on the filter. (The formation of the double compound can be observed if solid Na HC 03 is left to stand for a while in a closed vessel with 4% ammonia). In practice, this process is of particular advantage if you want to avoid hot calcination, which is always associated with loss, or if you want to produce crystal soda. Furthermore, it offers the advantage that the carbonic acid released during the transition from Na H C 0g to Nag CO @ is obtained in the form of ammonia compounds in the washing water and can be recovered therefrom without loss.

Beispiel. Example. 50 cc of 40 percent ammonia are poured over 5 g of Na HCO $, while cooling, and closed with repeated shaking. Leave this bottle to itself for% hour. The precipitate and liquid are separated, the precipitate is stirred with about 5o ccm of soda solution saturated at room temperature, and filtered off with suction. washes several times with the same solo solution until the wastewater is free of ammonia. The salt on the funnel is squeezed out and analyzed.
