Abstract
Description
The invention relates to an electrochemical cell. In particular, the invention relates to a rechargeable high temperature electrochemical power storage cell of the type, which has a molten alkali metal anode which is separated from a cathode via a separator.
According to the invention, a rechargeable electrochemical High temperature electricity storage cell with an anode molten alkali metal created over a Separator is separated from a cathode, the Separator the cell into an anode compartment, which the Contains alkali metal, and a cathode compartment separates which contains a cathode, and wherein the separator enables that the anode metal during the discharge of the cell from the Anode compartment through itself into the cathode compartment in which it can react in ionic form is released with cathode, the cell being a Operating position in which it stands upright, the separator in the operating position under one Angle to the horizontal extends such that the level or the level of the surface of the anode metal in the Anode compartment to which the separator is exposed during of cell discharge and during charging the cell rises, the anode compartment having a lower one Section and an upper section which has a has a larger horizontal cross section than that horizontal cross section of the lower section, and wherein the lower section with the cell fully discharged is completely filled with anode metal.
The separator can be a solid electrolytic conductor of the ions Be anode metal, the separator preferably has the Form a cylindrical tube, which at one end closed, open at the other end and hollow inside is, the separator is inside a cell housing arranged that in the operating position of the cell closed end of the tube farthest down and the open end of the tube is the top that The inside of the tube forms an electrode compartment and the tube has such a distance from the housing so that a space between the pipe and the housing is limited, which forms another electrode compartment. With this Construction type is when the anode compartment is inside the Pipe is usually circular or ring-shaped in cross section, and if it is outside the tube, points it usually has circular cross-section. If the horizontal annular cross section of the lower section of the anode compartment is smaller than that of the upper section follows that in this cell type the lower section is a lower horizontal, i.e. has radial dimension than the upper section. If the anode compartment is annular, the ring of the upper section is therefore thicker than that of the lower section.
Since the separator tube is usually (because of the way in which such a pipe is conventionally manufactured) constant diameter, can be different horizontal cross sections for the top and bottom Section can be created by making the casing circular is in cross section and by the diameter of the housing is changed (if the anode compartment is outside the tube lies); or by placing an insert in the lower one Section of the anode compartment (e.g. one tubular insert if the anode compartment outside the Is tube, or a cylindrical or tubular Use when the anode compartment is inside the tube ), the insert concentric with the pipe and is spaced radially from this. Instead, the Can also be used in powder or granular form are available.
In a special embodiment, the separator tube accordingly have a constant diameter, the interior of the tube forms the cathode compartment, which has the housing a circular cross section that is tube arranged concentrically in it and the space between the tube and the housing forms an annular anode compartment.
If the anode compartment has an annular horizontal Cross section, the thickness of the ring is preferred as low as possible, i.e. about 0.1 to 0.2 mm for practical purposes. Similarly, the lower section of the Anode compartment have an upper end which is as high as is possible, and the bottom section should extend up to extend an upper end which is at least as high lies like the center of the separator in Vertical direction. Accordingly, in a special Embodiment of the invention the thickness of the lower Section of the ring of the anode compartment preferably 0.2 mm or less, the lower portion of the anode compartment has a when the cell is in its operating position upper end, which is at a level or level that is not lower than the level or level of the Center point of the length of the separator tube.
Preferably, the space of the upper portion of the Anode compartment selected such that the upper section in the essentially full anode metal is when the cell is full is loaded, and is essentially empty when the cell is fully discharged, but with the bottom section to everyone Time remains full. In other words, the volume the upper section of the anode compartment to the capacity of the Act the cell in such a way that the upper section in the essentially full anode metal is when the cell is full is charged, and such that when the cell is fully discharged is, with the cell in its operating position, that Level or the level of the anode metal in the anode compartment at the top of the lower section of the anode compartment lies so that the lower section is substantially full Anode metal is when the cell is fully discharged Condition is.
To wet the full surface of the separator, the the Anode compartment is exposed to improve the Surface in this upper section with a Wick material should be provided. Thus, the surface of the Separators, which is directed towards the anode compartment, be covered with a wick material around the metal of the anode wicking, and that Wick material extends downward in contact with the Anode metal in all cell charge states when the Cell is in its operating position. Such a thing Wick material can be selected from the group, the one Metal gauze, a metal powder that works against the separator is held by means of a porous metal screen, a sintered porous metal cover and a felt cover contains. Of course, other types of Wick material should be suitable.
In principle, the wick height should be as low as possible be held so that from this point of view the upper one Section of the anode metal should be wide and low. From the standpoint of volumetric energy density in one However, it is a battery of tightly packed cells desirable that the cells be substantially constant Have outside diameters with no gaps between them. If thus the anode compartment lies outside the separator tube, follows that a deep upper section is desirable which is only slightly wider than the lower section. In in practice there is a compromise between these conflicting requirements when choosing depth and the width of the top section to match this with the to provide the required volume.
The separator is expediently a ceramic conductor of alkali metal ions, i.e. a conductor of sodium ions like for example nasicon or beta alumina, preferably Beta '' - aluminum oxide, but the invention is in principle directed to other types of separators, such as for example a micromolecular sieve, e.g. a Tectosilicate such as a zeolite that Alkali metal of the anode sorbs in the microporous interior contains, which typically channels, windows and pores in typically less than 20 angstrom units having. In any case, those mentioned above would Benefits of correctly reducing the wicking to one Minimum reached in principle.
In such cells, the alkali metal is typical Sodium and the cathode can thus be sulfur, for example or contain sodium sulfide / polysulfide and the cell is a sodium / sulfur cell; or the cathode could for example in the form of an electronically conductive Electrolyte-permeable matrix can be formed with a liquid electrolyte is impregnated, the liquid Electrolyte a molten alkali metal aluminum Halide salt electrolyte, such as sodium Aluminum chloride, preferably a 1: 1 equimolar Mixture of alkali metal halide and aluminum halide. In this embodiment of the invention, the matrix be formed from at least one of the elements of the group, the Fe, Ni, Co, Cr and Mn and compositions of these Contains transition metals, with at least one non-metal from the group that includes carbon, silicon, boron, nitrogen and contains phosphorus.
It generally follows from this that the separator is usually a solid electrolyte conductor of sodium ions is that the Anode metal is molten sodium, but one wide range, as mentioned above, of active Cathode material, electrolyte in the cathode compartment, catholyte in the cathode compartment or the like.
Es zeigt: The invention is described below, for example Reference to the drawing explained in more detail. It shows:

In the drawing, reference number 10 generally designates an electrochemical cell according to the invention. The cell 10 has an active anode material 12 made of molten sodium, a molten sodium aluminum chloride salt electrolyte 14 and a cathode 16 which is immersed in the electrolyte 14 and which in the discharged state has an electrolyte-permeable porous iron matrix which is electronically conductive and FeCl 2 in dispersed form therein as charged active cathode substance. Instead, the matrix can consist, for example, of porous nickel, which contains NiCl 2 in dispersed form as its charged active cathode substance. The matrix of the cathode 16 is saturated with the electrolyte 14 and has sufficiently finely divided NaCl dispersed therein to ensure that the electrolyte 14 is an equimolar mixture of NaCl and AlCl 3 in all states of charge of the active cathode substance, that is to say stoichiometrically exactly NaAlCl 4 .
Cell 10 has an outer shell 18 of weldable steel with a bottom plate 20 to hold it in an upright position as shown. The housing 18 is sealed with an insulating ring 22 made of alpha aluminum oxide. A separator tube 24 with an open end made of beta '' - aluminum oxide is arranged concentrically within the housing 18 , the lower end of the tube 24 is closed and the upper or open end of the tube 24 is glass welded to the ring 22 made of alpha-aluminum oxide. The open end of the tube 24 is closed with a sealing disc 24 made of weldable steel, which is sealed to the ring 22 made of alpha aluminum oxide. An anode pin 28 is welded to the housing 18 and a cathode pin 30 extends down through a sealed central opening in the disc 26 into the electrolyte 14 . The lower portion of pin 30 is embedded in and in electronic contact with the matrix of cathode 16 . The matrix acts as a cathode current collector. A space 32 for an inert gas is provided above the electrolyte 14 and a space 34 for an inert gas is provided above the sodium 12 .
The space between the housing 18 and the tube 24 occupied by the sodium 12 forms an anode compartment and the interior of the tube 24 forms a cathode compartment. These compartments are separated from one another via the separator tube 24 , the seal of the tube 24 , the housing 18 and the disk 26 with the ring 22 made of alpha aluminum.
The charge / discharge reaction of the cell can be carried out by the following Reaction are described:
Accordingly, sodium passes from the cathode compartment to the anode compartment during charging through separator 24 and in the opposite direction during discharge. During the discharge, the volume of the active cathode substance of Fe / FeCl 2 increases, with an increase in the level or level of the electrolyte 14 in the cathode compartment with a corresponding decrease in the level or level of molten active sodium anode substance 12 in the anode compartment; upon charging, the level of active molten sodium anode substance 12 in the anode compartment rises while the level of molten electrolyte 14 decreases, due to a decrease in the volume of the active Fe / FeCl 2 cathode substance.
With particular reference to FIG. 1, it should be noted that the housing 18 is constricted at 36 such that the anode compartment defined between the tube 24 and the housing 18 has a lower portion 38 and an upper portion 40 , wherein the upper section has a larger horizontal cross section than the lower section. In other words, the annular space between the tube 24 and the housing 18 in the upper section 40 of FIG. 1 has a substantially greater width, as shown with A , than that of the lower section 38 , as shown with B.
As can be seen from Fig. 2, the housing 18 has a substantially constant diameter, but the same effect is obtained by placing an inner cylindrical insert 42 in the lower portion of the housing 18 in contact with and spaced from the housing 18 Tube 24 . The insert 42 can have a solid hollow or special (powdery) structure. The anode compartment has an upper portion 40 and a lower portion 38 , the width A of the upper portion 40 being greater than the width B of the lower portion and the lower portion 38 being defined between the tube 24 and the insert 42 .
In Fig. 1, the solid portion 40 of the housing for a cell is shown, which is used in a battery in which good volumetric energy densities and a sufficiently tight packing of the cells are important. The upper section 40 thus has a relatively large depth and a relatively low value for A. For cells for use in situations where density and close packing are not of particular concern, the top portion may have a shallower depth and a greater value for A , as shown in broken lines in Fig. 1 at 40.1 .
In each upper section 40 , the outer surface of the tube 24 is wrapped with a wick 44 . This wick 44 is shown in detail in FIGS. 3 and 4, in which it is generally designated 44 , and is shown in contact with a portion of the tube 24 .
The wick 44 consists of an inner layer of fine-porous material 48 , an outer layer 48 of coarser porous material and an outer gauze layer 50 which holds the layers 44 and 48 in their position against one another and against the tube 44 .
The dimensions of the housing 18 ( FIG. 1) and the housing 18 together with the insert 42 ( FIG. 2) are selected such that the lower section 38 of the anode compartment always remains filled with sodium 12 in all charge states of the cell, and such that that when the cell is fully discharged, each upper section 40 is substantially empty of sodium 12 .
During cell charging, sodium will enter the anode compartment and the level or level of sodium 12 therein will increase, reducing the volume of the gas space 24 , and during the discharge the sodium level will decrease.
However, it is desirable that the entire outer surface of the tube 24 be wetted with sodium in all charge states, and for this reason the wick 44 is provided to distribute molten sodium upwards over the entire outer surface of the tube 24 .
However, lifting sodium upward against gravity using a wick is difficult and cannot be easily accomplished over substantial heights. Therefore, the cells 10 are formed with their upper portions 40 and their lower portions 38 so that the lower portions 38 are filled with sodium at all times. This enables it to be necessary only to bring sodium up, in the upper sections 40, by means of a wick, at relatively reduced heights which are less than the full height of the tube 24 . In this context it should be noted that the distance B is kept as small as possible, in the range of 0.1 to 0.2 mm, and that the lower section 38 extends at least up to half of the tube 24 .
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, it should be noted that layers 46 and 48 remain saturated with sodium at all times and that gauze 50 will retain build up or droplets of sodium as indicated at 52 when exposed to headspace 34 . In this connection it should be noted that the materials of the wick should preferably be easily wettable with sodium and expediently transition metals such as iron, nickel or the like. should be. In its construction detail, the wick 50 has a plurality of structures 54 that hold the accumulations or droplets 52 of the sodium. These structures 54 can be arranged in a cup-like manner at a distance from one another over the entire outer surface of the outer layer 48 ; or they may be in the form of vertically spaced, circumferentially extending channel-like channels that extend around the layer 48 . The cross-section shown in FIG. 3 has a part-circular cross-section and the cross-section shown in FIG. 4 has an elongated cross section. Of course, a less sophisticated gauze or fabric 50 may be used, if desired, for example an expanded metal construction with rhombic openings, provided that it performs the function of retaining droplets 52 of sodium in contact with the outer layer 48 .
