Abstract

1. A starter for fluorescent lights, more particularly 26 mm fluorescent lamps (10), which are difficult to ignite and of which the middle zone between their heatable lamp electrodes is subjected to highvoltage with respect to at least one of the lamp electrodes, the high voltage being temporarily supplied from outside at least until the starting operation is successful, comprising a series charging circuit situated between the operating voltage inputs and comprising a rectifier (34), a current limiting resistor (36), charging capacitor (38) and a high-voltage transformer (40), and also comprising a discharge circuit (42) which is connected in parallel with the charging capacitor (38) and with the high-voltage transformer (40) and which, when a specific voltage is exceeded at the charging capacitor (38), rapidly discharges the latter, characterised by a discharge element (42) which is controllable in respect of the beginning and end of its operation.
