The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for circulating a liquid and for bringing it into contact the liquid with a gas, in particular a fermentation process and a fermenter. The invention also relates to an energy recovery system for use in connection with a fermentation process, in which a feed gas that has passed through a compressor is subjected to the process under pressure and a pressurized exhaust gas is released from the process (such a fermentation process hereinafter referred to as "fermentation process of the type described above"). In the fermentation process of the type described above is in particular an aerobic fermentation process in which the feed gas is an oxygen-containing gas, e.g. B. air, and in the exhaust gas is the oxygen-depleted feed gas together with carbon dioxide formed in the process is contained.
Neuere Entwicklungen, darunter die Einführung neuer Verfahren zur Herstellung von Einzellerprotein und anderen Fermentationsprodukten, habenAerobic fermentation processes are essential for successful operation intimate contact between a liquid and a gas is necessary. die Verwendung von Fermentern mit in hohem Maße vergrößertem Fassungsvermögen notwendig gemacht. These developments in turn led to the development of improved fermenters, which are so constructed that large amounts of air are effectively introduced into and with growing crops these can be intimately mixed. Examples of such improved fermenters can be found in the British patents 13 53 008, 14 17 486 and 14 17 487 and the British Patent application 52 430/74 known to the applicant.
There is a need for fermenters that are even larger in capacity than the fermenters that are presently are executed. For the successful commercial operation of these very large fermenters it is important that the intimate Mixing the gas and liquid is done as effectively as possible.
When operating the systems described in British Patents 13 53 008, 14 17 486 and 14 17 487 and the applicant's British patent application 52 430/74 no significant excess pressure applied by the applicant, in order to avoid that the concentration of the dissolved carbon dioxide in the culture is increased to a high level, which turns out to be detrimental to those present in the culture Could turn out to be microorganisms.
According to the invention it has now surprisingly been found that in processes for the cultivation of bacteria of the species Methylophilus ntethylotrophus (formerly called Pseudomonas inethylotropha) in nutrient media containing methanol as a carbon source for growth included, e.g. B. in the processes known from the applicant's British patent specification 13 70 892, the tolerance to carbon dioxide is sufficient to permit the application of significant overpressures.

For the design and dimensions of the closed System of the method according to the invention for bringing into contact Many variations are possible, including all, of gas and liquid and of the device according to the invention Devices described in British Patents 13 53 008, 14 17 486 and 14 17 487 and in British patent application 52 430/74 of the applicant. The most suitable method is an aerobic fermentation method and the most suitable device a fermenter. The invention is in connection with large scale fermentation processes ears, e.g. B. in the production of single-cell protein on a large scale, particularly advantageous.
The pressure in the space above the liquid in the chamber at the top of the closed system can be achieved in any suitable manner. The pressure is suitably generated by measuring the amount of gas, which escapes from the cell, e.g. B. limited by means of a control valve. In a carried out according to the invention, Aerobic fermentation process, air is blown into the lower part of the riser pipe, the air doing two functions Has. The air is used to supply the microorganisms in a culture with the oxygen they need and how was mentioned above and as explained in more detail in British Patent 13 53 008, the driving force for the circulation. In the fermenter, oxygen is transferred from the gas into the solution and through the culture while carbon dioxide generated by the culture is consumed in releasing the gas from the liquid at the head of the riser pipe from the solution into the gas

Die Überführung des Sauerstoffs geschieht hauptsächlich im unteren Teil des Steigrohrs, während sich die Überführung desand is eventually removed from the system. The transfer of oxygen takes place mainly in the lower Part of the riser pipe, while the overpass of the

The pressure gauge of the gas in the upper part of the system is preferably between 2 and 15 bar, in particular between 3 and 10 bar. The effective length of the device, i.e. H. the length of the riser pipe is preferably at least 20 ni, in particular 40 m to 80 m. Particularly suitable arrangements are fermenters with an effective length of 60 m or 70 m, in the upper parts of which the gas pressure is 6 bar resp. 5 bar.
The process has in relation to the production of unicellular protein also other advantages:
The amount of product per unit volume of the fermenter can be increased, resulting in a smaller and cheaper fermenter for a given output.
The cell mass at a given dilution rate ^ O can be increased, reducing the amount of fluid which must be separated from the solid, which of course is associated with a cost reduction.
A higher proportion of the oxygen in the air supplied to the culture can be consumed as the effective height of the fermenter is increased and therefore the

weilzeit des Gases erhöht werden kann. Dies liegt daran, daß durch einen höheren Druck am Kopf des Steigrohrs die Entwicklung von schwer zu lenkenden Hohlräumen in den Steigrohren von höheren Fermentern verhindert wird, weil das effektive Äusdehnungsverhältnis der Gasblasen während des Durchgangs herabgesetzt wird.residence time of the gas can be increased. This is because the higher pressure at the head of the riser causes the Development of difficult to direct voids in the riser pipes of higher fermenters is prevented because the effective Expansion ratio of the gas bubbles is reduced during the passage.

In large-scale aerobic fermentation processes ears, e.g. B. Process for the production of unicellular protein, large amounts of energy are required, and when commercial operation of such procedures is the effective one Use of energy is important.
A combination of a fermentation process is also in accordance with the invention of the type described above and an energy recovery system provided in which the exhaust gas above atmospheric pressure to the energy recovery system is passed, wherein it is heated and then expanded in a gas expansion machine, which by the Energy generated by the gas expansion machine is transferred to the compressor and all or part of the energy provides that the compressor needs to compress the feed gas.

The gas expansion machine in the combined process and the connected device can preferably use more energy Make it available as required by the compressor or compressors, thereby saving energy for other uses can dissipate.
According to the invention it was found that the energy below Using the expansion machine can be recovered faster than the energy generated by the compressor or needed by the compressors when the pressure above the culture is increased, i.e. that needed Net energy decreases and that in addition the operation of the fermenter is improved. Therefore, the exhaust leaves the Fermenters suitably with a pressure gauge of at least 2 bar, preferably between 2 and 15 bar, in particular between 3 and 10 bar.
The exhaust gas typically has a temperature of approximately 40 ° C. when it leaves the fermenter.
Es ist auch wahrscheinlich, daß der in dem Gas vorhandeneIf this gas is fed directly to a gas expansion machine, the available work energy is substantial below the energy required by the compressor. It is also likely that the

The exhaust gas is therefore preferably heated to a temperature whose lower value is thereby limited becomes that it is necessary to prevent condensation in the expansion machine while its upper value is limited by the usefulness of the expansion machine. The two extremes for a preferred operation will be explained below:
"Exportenergie", zur Verfügung stellt.(A) The gas is heated to a temperature which is as high as possible, insofar as this is safe to operate Relax machine can be arranged. In this case, it is likely that the relaxation machine is the Energy required by the air compressor or by the air compressors of the process, as well as additional Energy for supply for other uses, d. H. "Export Energy" makes available.
The gas is heated to a temperature sufficient is high in order to avoid harmful condensation in the expansion machine, i.e. at such a temperature that the temperature of the gas never drops below the dew point while the gas is in the expansion machine. In this case it is likely that the expansion machine only provides part of the energy, which is needed to run the air compressor or the air compressors to operate the procedure.
Typische Kombinationen der Temperatur und des Eingangsdruckes der Entspannungsma-Provided that the overpressure is sufficient, it has been found to be particularly advantageous There is a case between the two extreme cases described above. In this case the energy goes through that the expansion machine is made available, just enough to provide all the energy for the compressor, i.e. there is self-sufficiency. Typical combinations of temperature and inlet pressure of the expansion valve

Machine that are necessary to achieve self-sufficiency are shown in Fig. 5, which is for a fermenter with a Height of 60 m, which is operated under a pressure gauge of 6 bar. Points that are above the Curve and to the right of it indicate that excess energy is available, that it is therefore possible To supply energy for other uses, i.e. "export energy". Points below the curve and to the left of it indicate that a certain amount of additional energy is necessary.
The temperature required for self-sufficiency is to a large extent a function of the inlet pressure the relaxation machine. In particular, because of the temperature limitations in actual operation, the need arises imposed on the application of considerable inlet pressures to the expansion machine.
B. bei 2600C.In case (A) the gas is suitably heated to a temperature between 400 ° C. and 1200 ° C., e.g. B. to 650 0 C, preheated before it enters the expansion machine. In the case (B), the preheating temperature is suitably between 100 0 C and 400 0 C, z. B. at 260 0 C.
The gas leaving the fermenter can be liquid / solid Contain material that is carried over from the culture and adversely affects the effectiveness of the relaxation machine could. To determine the amount of liquid / solid material in the To keep the gas entering the expansion machine as low as possible, between the fermenter and the expansion machine a suitable disconnect device should be included in the system.
Nachstehend werden Beispiele für geeignete Verfahren angegeben:Before the gas enters the expansion machine, it can be preheated by any suitable method. Examples of suitable procedures are given below:

Dieses Verfahren kann entweder mit Verfahren (2j oder Verfahren (3),die nachstehend beschrieben werden, kombiniert werden.(1) Use of a heat exchanger in which the exhaust gas from the gas expansion machine or the compressor is used will. This method can be combined with either method (2j or method (3) described below will.
This is possible because the gas leaving the fermenter contains enough oxygen. The device can additionally designed to burn any combustible material in the exhaust gas. Into the device can also be means of removing harmful chemical substances such as sulfur oxides, which the relaxation machine could damage be included. This can be done in the incinerator or at a later stage in the System.
The waste gas from the fermenter (which normally has an absolute pressure of around 1 bar has) to be released into the atmosphere. However, this gas can have a high temperature and can be used to Heat for other stages of an overall fermentation process to provide. In the production of single-cell protein, the gas can be used, for example, to generate steam for the Sterilization of the load and / or for other purposes of the process and / or to be used for heat To provide to the protein product directly or indirectly using a gas / air heat exchanger dry. The gas is particularly suitable for direct drying of the protein product, since the oxygen content is high was decreased below the value for the protein dust containing mixtures can lead to explosions.

The advantage of the energy recovery system according to the invention is that in this system of the above atmospheric pressure of the exhaust gas of the fermentation process Use is made, thereby making it possible to use cheap thermal energy in an effective manner for the to provide all or part of the work energy that is required to run the gas compressor of the process to operate.

The effect of a gas pressure of at least 2 bar the operation of the fermenter is explained in more detail by the following example:
It is assumed that 2 kg of O 2 are required to produce 1 kg of microorganisms.
The rate of dissolution of the oxygen is typically when the culture in the upper part of the fermenter is placed under a gas overpressure of 0.5 bar and the fermenter has an effective height of 40 m, S kg O 2 / (hm 3 ). 4.0 kg of microorganisms / (hm 3 ) are produced, and a fermenter volume of 1000 m 3 is required to produce 4000 kg / h.
However, the dissolution rate in a fermenter with the same height can be increased to 16 kg O 2 / (hm 3 ) if the overpressure is increased to 4 bar. Then 8 kg of microorganisms / (hm 3 ) are produced, and the fermenter volume required to produce 4000 kg / h is 500 m 3 .
in Fig. 3 wird die Alternative (1) des Energierückgewinnungssystems gezeigt, bei dem es sich um ein System mitin Fig. 3 is the alternative (1) of the energy recovery system shown, which is a system with

Selbstversorgung handelt. Self-sufficiency acts. Exhaust gas exiting a fermenter 6 flows over a separator 7 and a separator as shown Preheater 3 to an expansion machine 9, from which it is drained through line 11. Air entering the fermenter 6, flows through line 12 as shown and is compressed by compressor 10. The whole Energy for the compressor 10 is made available by the expansion machine 9.
Die grundlegenden Bestandteile sind die gleichen wie bei der Alternative (1), und die wesentlichen Unterschiede v/erden nachstehend dargelegt:4 can be used to explain alternatives (2) and (3) of the energy recovery system. the basic components are the same as in alternative (1), and the essential differences are grounded set out below:
In the case of alternative (2), the energy that is made available by the expansion machine 9 is not sufficient in order to operate the compressor 10 by itself, and an auxiliary energy source, denoted by 13, is required will.
In alternative (3) the energy that is made available by the expansion machine 9 exceeds the energy required by the compressor 10. There is an "export" of energy that is fed to an alternator can. In this alternative, 13 is therefore an alternator.
A useful improvement is illustrated in FIG. 4 by dashed lines. When this improvement is made Air from point 15 of compressor 10, enlarged as shown by 16, via line 14 to the preheater 8 supplied. This gives the system a certain degree of flexibility for the reasons set out below awarded in the company:

If this improvement is included, a larger compressor is necessary. The line 14 takes gas from a Point 15, which is located in a section of the compressor, because the gas pressure that is required is more the pressure of the fermenter off-gas than that of the inlet gas. As an alternative to an enlarged compressor, two Compressors are used, the air line 14 going off from the first of these compressors. The improvement could also, albeit less advantageously, be effected by drawing gas not from the compressor 10 but from a other source used.
Der Betrieb der Alternativen (1) bis (3) wird in den nachstehenden Beispielen näher erläutert:The operation of alternatives (1) to (3) is in the the following examples are explained in more detail:
If the fermenter 6 is operated with an overpressure of 5 bar and the compressor 10 delivers 90 kg / s of air, the compressor requires an output of approximately 27 MW. Exhaust gas leaves the fermenter at a rate of 85 kg / s and a temperature of 40 ° C. Kg natural gas is in the preheater 8 at a rate of 1.1 / s burned to increase the exhaust gas temperature of 40 0 C to 660 0 C. An output of 27 MW is recovered in the expansion machine 9, which is just sufficient to operate the compressor. The exhaust gas of the expansion machine, which has a temperature of 43o 0 C, to a different heating system is allowed to flow and through the conduit 11 leads to a saving of energy, the 0.5 kg / s of natural gas or the equivalent amount corresponds to a different fuel used therein.

For the energy recovery system of alternative (2) shown in FIG. 4, consider a 60 m high fermenter which is operated with an overpressure of 6 bar. If the compressor delivers 90 kg / s of air, an output of 28 MW is required. Exhaust gas exiting the fermenter at a rate of 85 kg / s and a temperature of 4 0 0 C. Natural gas is in the preheater 8 at a rate of 0.4 kg / s burned to raise the temperature of the exhaust gas of 40 0 C to 260 0 Increase C. In the expansion machine 9, an output of 16 MW is recovered. In this way, 16 MW of the required power are generated in an extremely effective process, while an additional energy source, which provides a power of 12MW, is required.

For the energy recovery system of alternative (3) shown in FIG. 4, consider a 60 m high fermenter which is operated with an overpressure of 5 bar. If the compressor delivers 90 kg / s of air, an output of 27 MW is required. Exhaust gas exiting the fermenter at a rate of 85 kg / s and a temperature of 40 0 C. Natural gas is in the preheater 8 / s burned at a rate of 1.2 kg to the exhaust gas temperature to increase to 725 ° C. The power recovered in the expansion machine 9 is 27.8 MW. In this way, a power of 0.8 MW is "exported" to the alternator 13.
