Abstract

A bearing surface and its adjacent fillets on a crankshaft are hardened by induction heating in two stages:- (a) A curved inductor is eployed to heat the two fillets on the inside of a crank to form austenite, followed by quenching; the crankshaft is stationary during this stage of the process. (b) A second inductor is then used to heat the bearing surface while the crankshaft is rotated, so that austenite is formed, and the bearing surface is quenched. By employing two separate hardening operations, the desired hardness profile can be consistently obtd. on both the crank pins and journals on a crankshaft.

Claims (1)
