Description
The present invention relates to a method for stabilizing acrylic or methacrylic acid by adding phenolic polymerization inhibitors.
Unsaturated carboxylic acids such as acrylic or methacrylic acid (which in the following are also referred to as monomers for the sake of simplicity) are for the chemical industry valuable raw materials. However, it is known that these compounds are extreme are unstable and tend to undergo a polymerization reaction with ease. It is therefore essential that these monomers during the production, sufficiently stabilized during storage and transport by a polarization inhibition will.
Light and heat are particularly effective means of initiating the polymerization of these monomers. As a result, if these monomers are used during work-up in distillative refining exposed to high temperatures (50 C and higher, especially 70 to 150 C and even higher temperatures) Polymers from these monomers precipitate in the system and often clog the distillation column, the lines etc .. which seriously disturbs the operation. Thus is the strong inclination Polymerizing these monomers in a technical and economic manner is a major disadvantage.
As widely used customary polymerization inhibitors for acrylic acid or methacrylic acid can Compounds such as hydroquinone, phenol, tcrt.-butylbrinzkaleehin, Cresol. Phenolhiazine and Äthylenthioharnsloff are mentioned, but are with these known compounds did not produce satisfactory results. Many of these well-known Compounds are unable to stabilize the monomers against high temperatures. In addition comes that the monomers have a tendency to polymerize particularly when they are made with stainless steel or carbon steel come into contact, so that in such a case among the known compounds practically no sufficiently effective PoK merisalion inhibitor is to be linden. Furthermore / own even those polymerization inhibitors that are exert a certain stabilizing effect at high temperatures, rarely an effective stabilizing effect for a longer period of time.
Dem/ufolge besteht die Aufgabe der vorliegenden Erfindung darin, ein Verfahren zur Verhinderung der Polymerisation von Acryl- oder Methacrylsäure, insbesondere bei erhöhten Temperaluren, zu schaffen Unter Verwendung eines neuen Polymerisationsinhibitors. der eine ausreichende Stabilisieruimswirkunt:Accordingly, the object of the present invention is to provide a method for preventing the Polymerization of acrylic or methacrylic acid, in particular at elevated temperatures, to be created using a new polymerization inhibitor. which has a sufficient stabilizing effect:

die Monomeren ergibt.on acrylic or methacrylic acid when processed at elevated temperatures.
It has now been found, surprisingly, that the objects indicated above can be achieved by the simultaneous use of phosphorus compounds together with certain phenolic compounds as polymerization inhibitors, resulting in an exceptionally effective stabilizer for the monomers.

Angesichts der Tatsache, daß bei Vergleichsversuchcn, bei denenThe exact mechanism of the stabilizing effect of these phenolic compounds (A) and the Phosphorus compounds (B) on the acrylic or methacrylic acid has not been fully clarified. in keinem Fall eine Stabilisierungswirkimg beobachtet werden konnte und angesichts der Tatsache, daß die gemeinsame Verwendung der Verbindungen IA) und (B) keinerlei synergistischen Effekt auf die Stabilisierung von ungesättigten Carbonsäureester!! bewirkt, wird angenommen, daß ein gewisser synergistischer Effekt durch die Kombination von Verbindungen (A) und (B) und der ungesättigten Carbonsäure, wie es erfindungsgemäß angegeben wird, erzielt wird.in no case a stabilizing effect could be observed and in view of the fact that the joint use of the compounds IA) and (B) no synergistic effect whatsoever on the stabilization of unsaturated carboxylic acid esters !! causes it is believed to be somewhat synergistic Effect through the combination of compounds (A) and (B) and the unsaturated carboxylic acid like it is specified according to the invention, is achieved.

Store, stop, but especially if the monomers exposed to elevated temperatures. Furthermore, the stabilizing effect when the monomer with stainless steel or rr.with carbon steel comes into contact, not diminished or impaired. The polymerization inhibitor according to the invention also exhibits a unique effect in that it has a satisfactory stabilizing effect even under severe conditions, when the monomer alone "exerts elevated temperatures is exposed. The inhibitor is particularly useful when added to the esterification reaction system the unsaturated carboxylic acid is added. Monomers obtained by a process are, in the case of acrylic or methacrylic acid by oxidation of propylene and acrolein or isobutylene «Nd methacrolein is manufactured contain one Number of by-products such as aldehydes. Acetone. Acetic acid, etc., in addition to considerable amounts of water. However, the stabilizing effect of the invention shows Inhibitors in the presence of "these impurities do not significantly reduce.
As already stated, the object of the present invention is essentially achieved by the simultaneous Use of the above phenolic compound (A) and the phosphorus compound (B) as a polymerization inhibitor for acrylic or Reached methacrylic acid. It has now been found that the stabilizing effect of the inhibitor is monomeric Acrylic or methacrylic acid by adding a third compound (C), namely phosphoric acid, Phosphine derivatives or benzaldehyde together with the above compounds (A) and (B) can be further increased. When the compounds (A), (B) and (C) are used together graze, the polymerization of the monomers can occur in places where the monomers from the gas phase «Are uncondensed, e.g. B. on the inner wall surface in the upper part of the distillation column, on the periphery of the inner wall surface of the cooler or in places where the monometallic lamp resides, be effectively inhibited.

As clearly shown by the results apparent from Tables I to IV, the Addition of the compounds (A) and (B) specified according to the invention to the unsaturated carboxylic acid effectively polymerizing the monomer at elevated temperatures for an extended period of time. In contrast, when the compound (B) is replaced by a polyphosphate such as sodium tripolyphosphate or sodium metaphosphate is substituted for the phosphorus compounds outside the scope of the compound (B), no such stabilizing effect is achieved (cf. Comparative Examples 1 to 5). Further, it can be seen that when either the compounds (A) or (B) are used alone or hydroxyl group-containing compounds outside the scope of the compound (A) (including the commonly used stabilizers) can be used alone (cf. Comparative Examples 6 to 27) or compounds containing hydroxyl groups outside the scope of the compound (A) together mil of the compound (B) can be used (see Comparative Examples 28 to 37), essentially none Stabilization of the monomer at elevated temperatures can be achieved.
The experiment also showed the polymerization of the ethyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid using the inhibitor according to the invention under the same test conditions as to prevent the above applied, no synergistic stabilizing effect, as it is with acrylic or methacrylic acid is obtained by using the compounds (A) and (B) simultaneously.

The results listed in Tables V and VI clearly demonstrate that the addition of the compounds (A), (B) and (C) according to the present invention to the unsaturated carboxylic acid effectively prevents the polymerization of the monomer at elevated temperatures. at the investigation of the inner wall of the gas phase part in Examples 13 to 27 was not Polymer observed, while in Comparative Examples 38 to 57 a polymer formation was found could be.
