Description
The invention relates to a cladding element for cladding the outside of a bathtub and a manufacturing method for this.
Nowadays, bathtubs are often made of acrylic, with different shapes and sizes being available depending on customer requirements. The installation of the bathtub usually includes walling in and then covering the side surfaces with tiles. This causes problems in particular when the bathtub has a curved outer contour. Neither the stones used for walling nor the tiles used for cladding are designed for such curvatures, which greatly increases the effort and thus the costs of installation. These can be roughly double the cost of the actual acrylic tub, which is generally mass-produced. In addition, it is sometimes felt to be disadvantageous that the tiled outer surface does not match any existing bathroom furniture in terms of appearance. When installing a new tub in an existing bathroom, it can also be difficult to match the existing tiled surfaces.
Against this background, it is the object of the present invention to enable a cost-effective cladding of a bathtub.
The object is achieved according to the invention by a cladding element with the features of claim 1.
The invention provides a cladding element for cladding the outside of a bathtub. In this context, “outside” refers to the side that is opposite the inside of the bathtub, i.e. the usable space of the same. The cladding element fulfills various functions. Among other things, it serves to mechanically shield the bathtub from the outside. On the other hand, it is primarily used to create an attractive look that can be adapted, for example, to the look of the walls of the bathroom or the look of other bathroom furniture. In this context, the term “outside cladding” of the bathtub explicitly includes the possibility that at least one element can be arranged between the cladding element and the bathtub, which element can serve, for example, to support the bathtub and/or the cladding element.
The cladding element has a construction panel and a first veneer layer which is materially bonded to the construction panel on the outside. The construction plate serves above all to ensure sufficient mechanical stability. In particular, it can be provided that the cladding element is dimensionally stable and possibly also stable without further support. This is essentially achieved through the material properties and possibly through the shape of the construction panel. The shape of the construction panel can be selected in different ways and adapted to the shape of the bathtub. For example, the construction panel can be curved at least in sections, for example so that this corresponds to an outer curvature of the bathtub. Alternatively or additionally, for example, an angled shape is also conceivable. Regardless of the shape of the bath tub to be lined, it is possible to line much of the exterior of the bath tub with a suitably shaped structural panel. This means that in contrast to cladding using tiles, which have a predetermined, usually flat shape, it is not necessary to work with a large number of individual elements.
The first veneer layer is bonded to the construction panel on the outside. You could also say that the first veneer layer and the construction panel together form a composite panel. The material connection provides a particularly secure connection between the construction panel and the veneer layer. While the function of the construction board is primarily to define the shape of the cladding element and to ensure sufficient stability, the veneer layer primarily serves to define the optical and, if necessary, the haptic properties of the surface visible from the outside. For example, the coloring and, if necessary, the surface structure of the veneer layer can be chosen to match the bathroom furniture or the tiled walls. In principle, it is possible to combine a specific construction board with differently colored or structured veneer layers.
In principle, different materials can be used for the construction panel. Of course, due to the intended use in a damp room, those materials are preferred that are at least largely insensitive to moisture. The construction panel is preferably made at least predominantly from a mineral-organic composite material. For this purpose, for example, acrylic stone can be used, which - normally about one third - consists of acrylic (polymethyl methacrylate; PMMA) and - normally about two thirds - mineral material (typically wise aluminum hydroxide) and optional additives such as pigments. Such material is sold, for example, by the DuPont company under the brand name CORIAN(R). A particular advantage of acrylic stone is that it can be deformed by the action of heat, so that even after the construction panel has been produced, its shape can still be adjusted, at least within certain limits, in order to achieve an adaptation to the shape of a bathtub, for example. Furthermore, a high level of stability can be achieved with acrylic stone even with comparatively low material thicknesses.
In general, if the construction board is coated on one side, there is a risk that unwanted deformation or bending will occur, usually due to shrinkage of the first veneer layer. This can be counteracted in that a second veneer layer is materially bonded to the construction board on the inside. That is, the first and second veneer layers are disposed on opposite sides of the structural panel. If shrinkage occurs, both veneer layers are usually affected in the same or at least a similar way. In this case, the second veneer layer generates a counter-stress to the first veneer layer, as a result of which deformation of the cladding element is prevented or reduced to a negligible extent. In terms of thickness and composition, the two layers of veneer should essentially match. It is understood that the second veneer layer, which is not visible when assembled, does not require any special color or structural design.
Of course, when choosing the material for the first or second veneer layer, it must also be taken into account that it is used in a damp room and can be exposed to a considerable degree of splashing water. This means that the veneer layer should at least have sufficient moisture resistance, with a certain abrasion resistance and resistance to common cleaning agents being advantageous. At least one veneer layer is preferably designed as a high-pressure laminate. Such high-pressure laminates, also referred to as HPL (high-pressure laminates), normally have one or more layers of a carrier material, e.g. paper, cardboard or textile fibers, which are impregnated with a synthetic resin and pressed together and possibly with a cover layer. The carrier material or the cover layer can have the desired coloring and a desired structure can be embossed into the veneer layer during pressing. However, it is also advantageous that such high-pressure laminates are already used in the prior art for coating bathroom furniture. It is thus possible to use a high-pressure laminate with a specific decor or a specific surface structure, which is used in the prior art for bathroom furniture, as the first veneer layer for a cladding element according to the invention. In this way, an optically perfect adaptation to the furniture in the corresponding bathroom can be ensured without having to design or produce a special veneer layer for this purpose.
In principle, it would be conceivable that the material connection between the veneer layer and the construction board is produced, for example, by pressing a veneer layer designed as a high-pressure laminate directly on the construction board at elevated temperature and thus producing it, with the material connection essentially being made by synthetic resin Veneer layer is produced. According to a preferred alternative embodiment, at least one veneer layer is bonded to the structural panel by an adhesive. This means that the veneer layer is prefabricated separately and glued to the construction panel. In particular, the adhesive can be a polymer-based adhesive. In particular, vacuum bonding can take place here, with the adhesive being applied to the construction panel and/or the veneer layer, the two elements being joined together and any trapped air bubbles being removed by the action of a vacuum. As a result, a closed, particularly stable layer of adhesive can be produced between the construction panel and the veneer layer.
In principle, there are different possibilities with regard to the size of the cladding element. Preferably, it is designed to form a panel along the entire height of the bathtub in the vertical direction. In this respect, its height can be between 50 cm and 120 cm, for example. Of course, it can be used for shower trays and thus for heights of 5cm to 30cm. With respect to the horizontal direction, it is normally intended to extend along part of the outside of the bathtub. Typically, a plurality of trim panels are combined to cover the entire exterior. The size of the individual cladding element naturally depends on the size of the bathtub and the number of cladding elements. In particular when the individual cladding element has a large surface area, it can be useful to provide at least local structural reinforcement. This is possible, for example, in that the cladding element has at least one web protruding from the construction panel for reinforcement having. The web is normally made of the same material as the construction panel and can be made in one piece with it. For visual and ergonomic reasons, the web usually protrudes from the inside of the construction panel. In relation to the intended installation position of the construction board, the web can in particular run horizontally, but alternatively or additionally a vertical or obliquely running web is also conceivable. To further increase stability, it is recommended to attach several bars, which can be arranged equidistant from one another if necessary. In addition, the attachment of two height-staggered webs allows the cladding element to be used for both the left-hand and right-hand version of a tub by swapping sides.
Furthermore, the invention provides a method for producing a cladding element for cladding the outside of a bathtub. This includes the steps of at least providing a construction board and cohesively connecting a first veneer layer to an outside of the construction board. These terms have already been explained in connection with the cladding element according to the invention and are therefore not explained again. In general, preferred configurations of the method according to the invention correspond to those of the cladding element according to the invention.
In particular, in the method according to the invention, a second veneer layer can be bonded to an inner side of the construction board in a materially bonded manner.
As already mentioned, each of the veneer layers can be produced directly by pressing under the influence of temperature on the construction board, whereby the material connection is produced at the same time, for example by means of a synthetic resin contained in the veneer layer. According to another preferred embodiment, at least one veneer layer is provided in a prefabricated form and is then connected to the construction panel by gluing using an adhesive. The adhesive can in particular be sprayed onto the construction board and/or the veneer layer. Furthermore, it is preferred that at least one veneer layer is connected to the construction panel by vacuum bonding.
As mentioned above, construction panels based on acrylic stone, for example, can initially be prefabricated—as a blank, so to speak—and subsequently shaped under the action of heat, which means, for example, that an adaptation to an individual shape of the bathtub can be achieved. Accordingly, in the manufacturing method, it is preferred that the construction board is adapted to a shape of the bathtub by heating and deforming before bonding with the first veneer layer.
