Patentiert im Deutschen Reiche vom 6. April 1906 ab. Patented in the German Empire on April 6, 1906.
The invention relates to a method and a device for grinding of lenses which have a double curvature on their surface and below are known by the name of toric lenses, namely the type in which the workpiece is advanced under the tool in a circle, the workpieces being attached to a rotating drum.
The invention consists essentially in that the tool except one. Rotational movement around its own axis is still a swinging one Moves about a second axis perpendicular to the first; but lies outside the drum axis causing the circular movement of the workpiece, and that the center of the spherical grinding surface of the tool is on the axis of oscillation lies.
dienenden Vorrichtung veranschaulicht.

Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
The lenses a, which have already been rough, are cemented onto the circumference of the rotating drum b in the usual way; this is rotated by means of the shaft c. The tool d is mounted in a swinging arm e , on the one hand to grind larger lenses with a small tool, on the other hand to be able to continuously change the grinding points of the tool to the workpiece. Its axis of rotation is located y . below the axis χ of the drum b. The tool has a spherical grinding surface, the center of which lies on the axis of oscillation y of the tool carrier. The generatrix of the lateral surface of the drum b is advantageously also curved along the same radius in order to achieve a firm hold of the lenses on it with as little cement as possible. The grinding wheel d is set in rapid rotation by a cord drive f. As a result of this arrangement, the workpiece is first ground according to the curvature of the grinding tool according to a spherical surface, the center of curvature of which lies on the oscillation axis y of the tool in the extension of the tool axis. If the drum b carrying the workpieces is then rotated around its axis with a smaller radius than that of the spherical surface, the workpiece being guided past the tool in a direction that crosses the direction of oscillation of the tool (around axis y) at right angles, the workpiece is given by the movement In this direction a curvature is ground, which in the penetration curves with the parallel planes lying perpendicular to the drum axis c consists of circular arcs, whose centers on the drum axis and their vertices on the penetration arc of the grinding surface with the
The size of the radii is equal to the distances between these vertices from the drum axis c and has its maximum value in the perpendicular determined by the tool axis. This maximum value is the radius of curvature of the grinding surface in one plane of symmetry, the distance between the vertex of the grinding surface from
ίο der j'-Achse der der anderen Symmetrieebene.ίο the j'-axis that of the other plane of symmetry.
Myopia requires lenses that are thicker on one side than the other. In this case, the axis of oscillation y of the tool arm e must not lie in the center plane of the drum b , as shown in FIG. The axis y can therefore be displaced parallel to itself in the horizontal direction, possibly with the horizontal displacement of the bearing piece g.
The axis of oscillation y must also be adjustable in the vertical direction in order to be able to change the radius of oscillation of the grinding tool and thus the radius of curvature of the grinding surface. For this purpose, both the bearing piece g and the arm e are provided with a slot for adjusting the axis j ^. Since the generatrices of the drum mantle surface, as already mentioned, suitably curved according to the axis y, so simultaneously with the replacement of the tool and the adjustment of the axis y and the drum b against such exchanged with correspondingly curved generatrix.
In order to produce concave lenses, the working surface of the grinding or polishing tool must be designed to be convex. The lenses must then be attached to the inner circumference of a hollow drum, the axis y of the oscillating arm e must be adjusted between the axis χ and the workpiece.
